Wind Energy is a viable industry that has become a valuable energy source. The energy generated from wind is clean and efficient. The wind energy industry helps to ensure that electric demands are met, wildlife impact is minimal, the environment is not devastated, as well as creates new jobs during the construction of wind farms, daily operations, manufacturing components, and exporting components to foreign countries. Development and Costs In 1986, the National Renewable Energy Laboratories developed a wind resource assessment for the U.S. Department of Energy. The assessment consisted of surface wind data and upper-air data. The results of this project help today’s developers determine the best location for a wind farm, as shown in the map below. Determining where to build a wind farm is based on location. The most favorable locations are those that have a steady annual wind speed of 15.7-meter seconds or more. It isn’t enough to have a windy location; the wind farm needs access to existing transmission lines or the transmission line infrastructure has to be built to get the electricity to the regional grid. The grid is made up of a network of independently owned and operated power plants and transmission lines. President Obama stated in his 2011 State of the Union address that he envision in 2035, 80% of the nation’s energy will be met by clean energy sources. Without increased transmission capacity his vision will not be achieved. The function of the transmission line is to get the electricity produced from any source to the grid. With concern over global warming growing, people are starting to turn a more serious eye toward cleaner sources of energy. Instead of solar power making a comeback as the ideal form, we are seeing a growth in the use of wind power. Wind farms are beginning to crop up all around the country. This new trend has gathered significant attention. Questions are being raised concerning the effects wind farms may have, from critics and supporters alike. Michelle Nijhuis, in the article “Selling the Wind” discusses the arguments on behalf of and in opposition to the increasing use of wind power, addressing what the consequences may be on the United States.
You’ll almost always find these wind turbines in open fields and they are usually called wind farms. Because these wind turbines create so much turbulence they have to be so far apart from each other and they can’t be right behind each other (Gipe). These wind turbines have to be 200-300 feet in the air because the blades on these wind turbines are 65-130 feet long (Gipe). Also these wind turbines have to have a 17 miles per hour wind to start spinning, because a wind smaller than that won’t create enough energy
2. Personally i am for wind farms and in my opinion. I think that wind energy has a great potential not only is wind energy very reliable and sustainable. it is also not as expensive as some at the other types of renewable green energy sources.
The proposed wind farm will be built in an area known as Horseshoe Shoal, located five miles off the south shore of Cape Cod, in Nantucket Sound. Cape Wind Associates is the organization planning to build the wind farm. The farm will be visible in all areas that face the sound on Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. The wind farm will consist of 130 wind turbines, each turbine measuring 420 feet in height, each turbine about a quarter of a mile apart, covering a 24-square mile area. If built, it will be the largest wind farm in the world.

Just as long as wind continues to blow and the sun shines, then wind power can produce energy to send to many different areas. There aren’t many locations that have continuous wind. And because of that, the widespread development of wind power isn’t as great as it could be. Although there are more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to this energy source, the disadvantages should be taken just as seriously. Wind power can harm animals, there was a study that stated birds were coming in contact with turbines and dying.
Preview: Today I will discuss the potential that solar power has to become this country’s main supply of energy and the latest research that can make solar power more efficient and cost effective. I will also present the environmental benefits that come with using solar power over other and more harmful forms of energy.
The average wind on the entire site is approximately 9m/s. Wind speeds of 7.5m/s are deemed economically viable. The wind speed can vary dramatically onsite. The wind speed was very low at 3m/s when we were there and we were told on our site visit that there have being wind speeds up to 50m/s experienced on the site. To prevent any damage the turbines cut out at a certain wind speed. This is typically 25m/s for the turbines on site.
The future of the United States solar energy industry will be shaped not only by economic growth, but also by the rate of declining oil resources and the global realization of the consequences of human induced climate change. Political responses to this realization in the United States include; new policies, legislature, and tax incentives to both businesses and private households to promote growth and investment in the solar power industry.
When picking an energy resource for the topic of this paper, I bounced around a lot of ideas. Then it occurred to me that I should write about what I will be living with in about a month. My mom just finished designing and building our earthbag, solar, off-grid house, a four-year endeavor. I will soon live in a place powered by one of the most common alternative energy resources, solar energy, so I should learn more about it. At our new house, we have two stand alone pedestals with six 170W panels on each pedestal, making for a 2040W or 2kW solar system.

This wind flow, or kinetic energy, when "harvested" by modern wind turbines, can be used to generate electricity. There is an abundance of wind to meet our needs, “the potential of [the total] wind power [in the world] is. 20 times more than what the entire human population needs” (Maehlum). Currently, wind power is one of the lowest-priced renewable energy technologies available, costing between four and six cents per kilowatt-hour, depending upon the wind resource.
Some habitats will avoid areas that have disturbance and will never return to that area. When building these wind turbines, they should be placed as far offshore as possible, avoid sensitive areas, try not to build near areas that are already indicated by the state or federal government to have problems, and utilize best management practices to try to minimize project risk.
