High tech aluminum baseball bats aren’t quite as new to the game as many people may think. Author, Patrick Hruby, wrote in Sports Illustrated, “introduced in the mid-1970’s… metal bats have become increasingly potent, forged with alloys… pressurized air chambers” (Hruby 42). Over the last few decades these aluminum ‘killer bats’ have evolved to be even more potent. “Some coaches and players claim these powerful bats are ruining the integrity of the game and placing pitchers at undue risk” (42). Every college, divisions I through III, are using these bats religiously. Each year bigger and better bats are at each team’s fingertips. A few of the more popular bats this year are the TPX C555 Platinum, TPX Omaha, and the EASTON Redline, just to name a few. These bats are so advanced that almost everything about them has changed, for instance, “…an
Albert G. Spalding created the first major league baseball glove. “Wearing a glove just wasn’t manly” said Smithsonian. It used to be that the strongest player on the field was whoever had the most broken fingers or blisters, but after a while, players realised they
In the essay “In Defense of Masks,” by Kenneth Gergen, he states how people do not “normally develop a coherent sense of identity” (Gergen 2). Gergen talks about how we as people may “experience severe emotional distress,” (Gergen 2) instead of having a set identity. The difference between the idea of multiple identities that are represented by masks and having a coherent sense of identity of one’s true self, is that having a coherent sense of identity means that a person stays the same in every situation and never changes. On the other hand, having multiple identities that are represented by masks means that one’s identity is ever changing and shifting depending on the situation that they are in and the people who surround them. However, even
Jackson Katz is the founder of Mentors in Violence Prevention which is an education program that has been focused on military and sporting organizations in attempts to put a halt on gender violence. Other than being an educator, Katz is also an author and filmmaker. In 2013, he produced the film Tough Guise 2. In this film, Katz reviews the normalization of male jurisdiction in America. The film looks at the messages of gun violence, sexism, and bullying that are sent to men throughout their entire life. Tough Guise 2 argues the statement that male brutality is a rooted back to our cultural standards of manhood. A pivotal point of the film is that a male’s masculinity is not just handed to them, it must be earned. During the course of the film, this point is supported by examples such as gun violence, homophobic messages and mass shootings.

Football is a sport your mother warns you not to play, but your father is on the other side of the argument, encouraging you to do it because it is a “man’s game”. Even though you don’t want ruin your manhood, your mother is always right. Football is in the top three of most injuries caused in sports (HEALTH GRADES, INC) and a majority of it comes from concussions. In order for all these players to make money and play the way they do, they need good equipment. Most of the players have sponsors or people who represent them like many well-known brands. Many of these sponsors will give them like bats, balls, or gloves to try out to see what they like the best and to represent the company. If they do not like the object they got from them they can send it back and get a new one they like to use. The players have to go by what they like best and how it feels to them when they play. If a player has a glove that they don’t like it’s not going to feel right when they go to catch the ball and they might drop it, causing them and the team they’re playing for money.
What does Sairy say the Wilsons have been to the Joads? She says that they have been nothing but trouble.
A catcher wears shin guards that were designed to protect him from hits from balls and bats (Catcher's Equipment 9). Bats and balls can cause damage and hurt if someone gets hit with them. Shin guards were made to try to minimize the amount of injuries. Helmets that a catcher wears is the most important gear they can wear. The helmets are made to keep the top, back, and sides of the head safe from any type of forceful blow (Catcher’s Equipment 4). Head injuries are very serious, and are mostly caused by hits to the head, but catcher’s gear can help prevent such injuries to the catcher. Baseball has been around for over one hundred years and throughout that time, gear has been helping players. In 1907, catchers began to wear protective gear, and that gear has been changed to help protect catchers in years since (Catcher’s Equipment 2). Catcher’s gears has been improved on very frequently, and it will keep following that pattern so catchers can be as safe as they can. Since MLB has rules in place that help lower the impact of home plate collisions, if one does occur, the gear that the catcher’s wear can only help protect the catcher even

Have you ever worn a mask before? Maybe the mask wasn't a costume mask, but it was a mask to make you seem happy, or seem cool, or anything that made you feel like something than you are not normally. Chances are you have. Trying to fit in with the crowd, a mask is used to obtain the things we cannot reach on our own. Masks are especially common today because of the pressures to belong to the 'in'; group, or the pressures to succeed. Books, using masks, commonly show the many connotations of masks. They are used to find out what people are for real, on the inside of the mask. The imagery of masks is used throughout the book of Twelfth Night. Shakespeare uses the imagery of masks to reveal characters true emotions and to express the power of raw beauty. Shakespeare uses this imagery through all of his characters in the play, but especially the two characters of Viola and Feste.
