William Shakespeare, considered one of the greatest writers of all time, was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England which was located about 100 miles from London. His exact date of birth was not recorded so it cannot be determined exactly what day he was born, but he was baptised on April 26, 1564. At that time, babies were baptised three days after their birth so it is thought that he was born on April 23, 1564. He was born to John and Mary Arden Shakespeare. His father was a rather successful tradesman, glove maker, and public figure. His mother was the daughter of a farmer. William was the third of eight children of John and Mary, although the two siblings before him died in infancy. Another younger sibling died before the age of ten. “Scholars have surmised that he most likely attended the King's New School, in Stratford, which taught reading, writing and the classics” (Bio). The school was staffed with the best teachers who were Oxford-educated. The Shakespeare family was said to have attended church together regularly. Not very much is known about William Shakespeare’s childhood nor was anything recorded. When William got a little older and out of school, he married Anne Hathaway who was eight years older than him. She was from a village about a mile from Stratford. Anne turned out pregnant before their marriage on November 28, 1582. Some think that this pregnancy might have moved up the wedding date. They had their first child six months after their marriage on May 26, 1583. They named their new daughter Susanna. A couple of years after Susanna’s birth, they had twins, Hamnet and Judith.
