Imagine a world where the majority of the population values morals and treats others with respect. Wouldn’t that be great? A multitude of our daily conflicts would be solved, the world would be a more enjoyable place. Character and morals are a vital part of a student’s life and need to be further valued in schools around the world. Students are faced with many challenges and conflicts on a daily basis and could benefit from the reinforcement of the knowledge of right and wrong and good character. Students are growing up not knowing the difference between right and wrong. Today, the majority of students spend a large percentage of their time using technology and in many cases this could negatively affect them because of the inappropriate and explicit content they see. For example, today children learn swear words early on because of the explicit content they are hearing in these songs or videos. If students take classes on morals and character, the classes will provide students with a solid foundation of knowing right from wrong. These classes will enable students to make better decisions in the present and in the future. When students are taught good morals and character in school, they will form healthy relationships both in and out of school. With the help of these classes, students will learn good morals and will become benefactors in our society, and unfeigned leaders, later on in life. Friendships often develop when common interests are shared. It’s not likely that a student of good character would become friends with a virulent student with bad morals. Whether students are at lunch, talking in the halls, or hanging out on the weekends these positive social experiences help students to learn good morals and respect. However, this counterclaim is invalid because students are interacting less face to face because of technology and social media. Morals are not always taken into account when students are not face to face with the person they are interacting with, this has caused more negative interactions. Especially if a student gets in an argument with one of their friends, they are more likely to confront them over social media where they do not have to interact face to face. Students are extremely impressionable and it is easy for them to make bad decisions just to fit in or be accepted when they are talking through a screen. When students learn about social behavior and relationships it is easier to understand why the behavior of other people is different from others. Our society has many ways of socializing with people around us, and getting to know the right way is an important factor. Everyone in our society has their own behavioral reaction to things and other people, therefore knowing how to react to any type of behavior, and not bring up a problem is something very important. They learn by watching and are quick to mimic our behavior with their peers outside of home. School can be frustrating for students. Going to school, doing homework, and then repeating it all over again the next day can become quite tedious. Especially when one feels as if they are not gaining anything from doing well in school, it causes students to have very little motivation to complete their schoolwork. Students might be motivated if there was some sort of incentive for attending school and doing well at it. A law should be passed that requires students to be paid for doing well in school because it gives them motivation, helps them with financial issues, and allows them to learn how to manage money more effectively.
An education is something that one can keep for a lifetime. Acquiring a good education can affect one’s personal life, one’s community, and one’s entire generation.
The basis of good character involves being respectful, honest, hardworking, responsible, caring, and understanding. Parents and teachers alike wish for their students to possess good character; but what does “character” mean in the realm of education; and whose responsibility is it to ensure that students do in fact develop good character? The Character Education Partnership (2003, pg. 1), defines good character as involving “understanding, caring about, and acting upon core ethical values”, and thus takes a holistic approach to the development of character in students by developing the “cognitive, emotional, and behavioral aspects of moral life.” Through character education, students can grow to understand core values, learn to develop caring relationships, and grow in self-motivation; thus students grow in character as their understanding and subsequent commitment deepens through varied opportunities to apply values through everyday interactions (CEP, 2003). In theory, a student who possesses good character is a more productive, responsible, respectful, and caring student; yet the question as to whether a student with good character is a better student academically remains.
Values, norms and culture are essential to society’s survival. Roles and standards give groups within a society structure and allow members to know what’s expected of them, socially. As a teacher, parent or leader of a group, you’re expected to teach the group to be conventional and conform to society. It is basic human nature to have the desire to pass on our own values, norms and culture to our kids and/or those we are in command of. We often resort to educating them based on values we’ve been taught by society.
It is said that “Character education promotes core ethical values as the basis of good character.” This means that some values which include caring, honesty, fairness, responsibility, and respect for self and others are all essential to building character education. The hope is that schools that implement character education programs look at these values as obligations for the student to uphold.
In a society with a vast array of different beliefs and mediums through which these beliefs are presented, children can get lost in an overwhelming sea of influential ideas and concepts not necessarily intended for their eyes and ears. Character education is a concept that calls for teachers and school curriculums to guide students in learning what Edward F. DeRoche and Mary M. Williams (2001, p. 25) described as “core values held sacred by a democratic society.” Parents are generally considered the teachers of morals, but if values like sharing, compassion, and honesty are never enforced or addressed outside the home, these values may never be established as a stable foundation in the child’s mind. Character education’s purpose is to help children choose to be well-mannered, stable, cooperative individuals. Character education is not in every school system, but its support is growing along with the amount of research evidence increasing in its favor (Viadero, 2003). The teaching of values in education has evolved into character education, and today there are different studies, designs, and resources for character education programs in schools to foster moral growth and citizenship in children.
Using computers and hand held devices for relationships, reading, writing, and entertainment, turning them into introverted and socially inept individuals. Current trends resonating from our educational institutions to our workplace can be examples of how technology has altered the way younger people communicate. This tragedy transcends from youth to adulthood, affecting the workplace. Social networking sites have begun to take hours away from employers. How do students understand ethical and moral dilemmas if they are allowed to make mistakes and work through a particular problem?
Education plays a vital role in shaping tomorrows’ leaders. Not only can we become a better nation by acquiring the skills necessary to be productive members of a civilized society. Increase knowledge to actively achieve and meet challenges that can produce changes in which are productive for attaining business innovations, political and economic objectives.
After twelve years of school, it took me until now to figure out exactly why I had been there all those years. It was not to torture me by making me learn how to spell but to make sure that my classmates and I got the opportunity to make the most of ourselves. Opportunity that would come from learning as much as possible from books and beginning to see that the world focuses on more than just history and English . I owe my success in life and school to teachers who taught me to spell and to be respectful and responsible. Those quick to argue with me say that school's usefulness is shallow: deeper-real-life experiences truly educate a person. School should be seen not only as a place to study, but also as a place to learn about real life. People cannot depend on experience alone for education just as they cannot solely rely on information from school books to prepare them for life. The lessons, whether from a book or not, learned in school transcend the classroom to real life situations.
In our culture today, there is a huge emphasis on education, especially higher education. Society basically says the more educated you are, the better off you are. That is pretty much true if you live by the means of society. The basic idea that education, especially a college education, is something that people should pursue even into their adult years is not by any means a new idea.
