If you were an East Noble Marching Knight last season you spent more than 200 hours practicing, and that’s just with the whole band! Band members are encouraged to practice visuals and movements outside of when you are at the school. So here’s the thing, everyone has a breaking point, but are the East Noble Marching Knights at their’s? Yes, the East Noble Marching Knights are overworked.
First reason why marching band students in East Noble are overworked, is because there is a lot of strain on your body. You have to stand up straight, with your shoulders back for long periods of time. While you do that, you must take the appropriate sized step to get to your dot in a certain amount of counts, which if you are unlucky, you have to jazz run to your dot, while keeping your body straight. On top of all that, you must hold your instrument the correct way, and in some cases, the instrument is very heavy. There have been stress-fractures from doing these for long periods of time.

Practices are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Tuesday, the practices are from 6:00 p.m. through 9:00 p.m. (3 hours). Wednesday practices are right after school, when students are already tired from school, from 3:15 p.m. through 5:45 p.m. (2 hours 30 minutes). Thursday practices are from 6:00 p.m. through 9:00 p.m. (3 hours). People who are in other sports struggle to balance it with marching band. And if you miss practice you get penalized. When I was in marching band, I had been home sick from school days and two practices. Mr. Munoz told me I wasn’t allowed to perform at semi-state. But then in physical warm-up he told me I was going to perform. I was penalized, but then he decided to take it away. Most kids however, aren’t so lucky and have to stand on the sidelines. Band is family. When your student walks onto campus, he or she is instantly adopted into the strongest society on campus. They will be spending their school days among the top achievers on campus, with fellow students who look out for one another and steer each other away from trouble instead of towards it. Teachers, staff, parents, and volunteers watch over all the kids as if they were their own.
A popular quote used by many guard members is that “Color Guard is god's gift to the marching band”. No matter your religion, the message of the quote is clear. Many guard members feel that the marching band needs them. Most band members would disagree with this, however, the color guard is superior to the band because the guard has to work harder, has more interesting equipment, and a better offseason activity than the marching band.
People only have passion for something they enjoy. Marching band needs to become more enjoyable for students. When you watch other bands perform, you can really tell which bands are enjoying themselves because the majority of the time they are better than the ones that just meander around playing their instrument with no real emotion. Now know that I am not saying we should just goof off more and not really do marching band, but we should make the marching show more interactive instead of just marching from one place to another. We should do more stuff like the poses at the beginning of the Batman show or how in the 80’s Show we did that lung thing during Don’t Stop Believing. Students enjoy
I was smiling and laughing while many on the plane were vomiting. This was the most fun I’d had on a flight, but not everyone seemed to share my excitement. They had good reason for anxiety; we had endured a turbulent, and were now circling Columbus unable to land. This started my experience at Winter Guard International World Championships in my junior year.
Following in my sister’s footsteps, my mom signed me up to march trombone my freshman year. The idea alone baffled me; at the time dance filled my life and I showed no interest for this vastly different activity. However, I still joined, but since the peak of my dance season conflicted with the beginning of marching band, I joined a few weeks late. All would have been well if only the trombone section did not disintegrated leaving me without a home. This left me in the dust with no section to go to. To learn a brand new instrument would have shoved me even farther behind, and I refused to go on. In spite of my thoughts, my mom insisted in me not dropping out, so we took a new approach. It is general consensus that marching band is one of the furthest things from a sport; in fact, most people believe that band is nothing more than a group of nerds that were too unathletic to play sports. Contrary to this popular belief, marching band is much more physically taxing and demanding that many people are aware of. Based on the amount of physical exertion it entails and the similarities with other sports that are present, marching band should most definitely be considered a sport.
Once you see the Medieval Times Knight battle you will have a whole new appreciation for knights; a castle garden. It all started with the stairs. When it was time for the show to begin my family and I went to the grand staircase. Once we got there two trumpet players dressed in baggy pants and shirts started playing. Their trumpets were unusually long with banners on them. One banner had a lion's head on it and the other had a shield. The trumpet players played the most crisp and majestic sound I have ever heard. The sound rang through the castle and all of the crowds fell silent.
One of the biggest decisions of my high school career came my sophomore year when I decided to try out for the role of drum major in my high school band. This decision was very tough to make due to the fact that I was a sophomore, and although I already had three years of experience under my belt as a band member at Northview High School, I knew that it would be very tough to earn the respect of my peers if I succeeded in becoming drum major. Out of the three years I had spent in the band, the biggest influence on my decision to try out came from my very first marching season, between August and December of 2012. There is something that generally is very noticeable in every band: the gender imbalance. The gender imbalance is can be described by looking at a band and noticing the people in each section. Some have all males or at least a great majority of them, like percussion (which is drums) or low brass (tubas, baritones or trombones). While others such as high woodwinds (flutes or clarinets) have a majority female population. There are a few sections you may be able to look at and see this, such as trumpets or saxophones, but even this depends on the marching band. This is a huge problem in the marching band world and it needs to be fixed so that more people will join or continue on in their music. The reason this is a huge problem is because when someone breaks that gender imbalance, for example a guy plays the flute, then people start to target that person. He could be teased or bullied which could make him quit band. Not a lot of girls try out for low brass or percussion because they guys in the group will most likely see them as inferior and give them all kinds of crap every day. Marching band is supposed to be a community that is like a family and people should feel comfortable with whatever that choose to play. ... They require practices after school almost every day, especially if one is looking into being recruited. Troy likely knows this, and it is just one more way he can keep his son from football (Wilson 1303). Though Troy's actions toward his children are harsh and unfair, this is not Troy's fault. He was raised in a time when jazz music and African-Americans playing on professional sports teams just didn't happen.
Which was stressful on the grounds that I had golf right after school and had to quickly get ready for another practice. That Tuesday when my cousin and I went to golf I asked her about guard. Since she had been and band, she thought that I would be good at. So knowing that I had the support of my cousin and friends made me feel better about going. I arrived about ten minutes early, someone had stood at the front doors of the high school telling people to go to the band room. I walked in and had to fill out a packet of information. I had to explain my earlier dance experience. It also stated that they would look at my grades, attendance, and talk to my teachers about what kind of student I was. After that we got a summer schedule to look over once I got home to make sure that it was a commitment that I wanted to make. This schedule listed every rehearsal time and date for the entire summer. It was nice to have but at the same time scary to look at. After everyone had finished looking at the schedule we got to go into the middle school gym to start practice. By being responsible for the processing, understanding, and relaying many different key and time signatures simultaneously throughout the ensemble will increase my understanding of many core fundamentals of music, specifically in the area of music theory. Additionally, I would be provided the opportunity to be familiar with all parts, whilst knowing who is responsible for specific tasks within marching band. Learning and growing in my comprehension of these areas would assist me with planned career path of a Music Teacher. Holding the position of Drum Major would also provide deeper understanding as to what a Music Teacher’s responsibilities entail. Reading the various pieces for all the instruments and parts, while conducting the right time signatures at the right moments, and making sure everyone is following their drill sheets are just some of these responsibilities. One of the dominant groups was the Franks of central and western Europe, who gradually expanded their power until their leader Charlemagne became emperor of the West. Powerful local lords and their mounted warriors offered protection to peasants, who became their serfs in return. By the 11the century a new social order was formed my armored knights, who served a local lord, count, or duke, and were in turn served by serfs. When males were about seven, a boy of noble birth who was going to become a knight was usually sent away to a nobleman’s household, often that of his uncle or great lord, to be a page. Here he learned how to behave and how to ride. About 14, he was apprenticed to a knight whom he served as a squire. He was taught how to handle weapons and how to look after his master’s armor and horses. He even went into battle with his knight, helping him put on his armor and assisting him if he was hurt or unhorsed. He learned how to shoot a bow and to carve meat for food. Successful squired were knighted when they were about 21 years old. Young men who wanted to be knights had to keep fit. So squires trained constantly to exercise their muscles, and improve their skills. They practiced with each other and also sometimes with their knightly masters.

It opens a window to pictures and experiences that most cannot, and do not , think of on a daily basis. Michael Igantieff has experienced there realities as he travelled around the world in his work as a journalist, and it is in this book that he shares with us his thoughts and ideas about these war torn countries. In this paper I will review the book and discuss major themes and arguments, as well as the downfall and shortcomings of it.
