In studying this war, there are some significant events that contributed to the start of World War II, that led to the US's entrance into W.W.II, and events that helped bring an end to W.W.II. The failure of the Geneva Peace conference, Hitler's annexation of Austria, the Spanish Civil War, Hitler's acquisition of Czechoslovakia, the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact, Germany's invasion of Poland, and the fall of France all contributed greatly to the start of World War II. Some events that contributed to the entrance of the US into the war were Italy's invasion on Ethiopia, Japan's invasion of China, the Attack on Pearl Harbor, the Destroyer-Base Deal, the Nye Committee, and the Lend-Lease Act. The Invasion of Italy, the Battle of Midway, D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, and the fall of Berlin to the Soviets were five of the events that contributed to the ending of World War II.

Christmas Under fire is a World War II propaganda film created by the G.P.O film unit under the instruction of the Ministry of Information. It was released in 1941 in an attempt to get the isolated United States to engage Germany and the Axis powers in World War II. The purpose of the film according to the director Harry Watt was to make Americans feel “Uncomfortable while they celebrated Christmas.”(Sarah Street, 79). The film showed the Christmas of 1940 which occurred at the height of the Blitz of London. The Blitz of London was a period of intense aerial bombing of London and the surrounding area. These attacks happened in night-time raids to instill fear and destroy the morale of the British people. The government used its control over the media to maintain the appearance that life was going on as normal despite the nightly bombings. This is apparent in other propaganda films, such as “London can take it”. Which is the prequel to Christmas under Fire.
There were many hardships that the troops faced in and out of combat. The U.S. forces were dug in holding off the Germans, but were stuck there with disease and little food and supplies. During the winter, heavy snow storms pelted both the Germans and U.S. forces, this caused many guns, artillery, and equipment to freeze or jam and have to be thawed out. The weather in the region was supporting the Germans, while the U.S. were in thick forests and fog, so air support couldn’t be used.

World War I and World War II both had significant social, economic, and political impacts on the lives of African Americans and brought enormous change within American society. Many African Americans viewed the war as an opportunity to fight for their country in exchange for equal citizenship rights at home. Unfortunately this was achieved through neither WWI nor WWII despite the irony of the US fighting a war for democracy abroad when discrimination existed on the home front. The central themes explored in which African American lives have been touched by the World wars are migration, military segregation, racial violence and political power. It is evident that although WWI and WWII did not amount to the momentous leap forward that African Americans desired in the pre-war years, the events undoubtedly had profound impacts on the lives of African Americans and ultimately paved the way for the Civil rights movement.

The road to World War II was built by several different causes. Under Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, Germany had desire to expand and dominate over most of Europe. This expansionism could be seen in Germany’s allies too. Japan set its eyes on China, and Italy set its eyes on Northern Africa. Hitler also ignored many of the agreements under the Treaty of Versailles, and begun breaking the treaty more and more up until the start of World War II. Unfortunately he couldn’t be stopped, a policy of “Appeasement” from the League of Nations allowed Germany to build an army and begin the annexation of its European neighbors. This policy of appeasement was accompany by the belief that collective security would pull through. If all the nations banded together and declared collective security, no other country would dare attack. Unfortunately when Germany and her allies did attack, collective security proved useless. Ultimately the policies of appeasement, the belief that collective security would work, and the over aggression of the Axis forces would lead to the start of World War II.

In total, over sixty million people were killed, making World War II the deadliest conflict in modern history. The intervention of the United States after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 brought the end of the war 4 years later.
It’s 4:30am on September 1st, 1939 and the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein awaits the order to open fire on the Polish garrison of the Westerplatte Fort, Danzig in what was to become the first military engagement of World War II. Meanwhile, sixty two German divisions supported by 1,300 fighter planes prepared for the invasion of Poland. Fifteen minutes later, the invasion would take place and spark the beginning of World War II. Two days later at 9am Great Britain would send an ultimatum to Germany, demanding that they pull from Poland or go to war with Great Britain. Four hours later the Ultimatum would expire and Great Britain would officially be at war with Germany on September 3rd, 1939.

World War II has often viewed as the good war, which was fought for a clear purpose. The purpose to crush Nazism and fascism and all the horrible things for which they stood. But the consequences of World War II are much more complex than that. This has indicated that even a war, which has a good cause, can have bad consequences.
