Although being described as a great american classic, The Great Gatsby has been challenged and even banned from public schools! If you don’t already know what a banned or challenged book is, it is when a person or group of people don’t believe a book or books aren’t appropriate for young readers. Books that are believed to be unsuitable are challenged by these people and sometimes are taken out of the library. The most common reason for challenging or banning of books is because it has material that is offensive to religious readers, such as sexual references and drug usages. F. Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan, who is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, who is eventually (accidentally) ran over by Daisy. Myrtle is married to Mr. Wilson and has an apartment in New York City with Buchanan. Gatsby has wild parties every weekend, hoping Daisy will show up to one. Eventually, they meet again and have a fling, only for her to remain with Tom Buchanan. Gatsby is shot in his pool by Wilson who thinks that he is the one that had an affair with Myrtle and killed her.
In 1987, The Great Gatsby was challenged. The book was challenged by the Baptist College in Charleston SC. The reasoning for the challenge and subsequent banning of the book was because of “language and sexual references in the book.” The book was only challenged once and was eventually
