He is very wrapped up in how bad his throwing is going. He is unable to throw a ball very good, this is making him even more unconfident. His teammates aren’t helping him throw the ball any better. The first personal traits that Coach Dale was forced to exhibit were his toughness and his assertiveness. On his first night in Hickory he met the men of town in the barbershop who were all willing to provide their experience and insight on the team and how to coach. Coach Dale had enough self confidence to know that none of these “insights” were going to help the Hickory team win basketball games and let them know they weren’t welcome by turning his back and walking out. Everyone should alway try. No person should ever stop trying. Even when something is hard that does not mean we should stop trying. It is not good to give in just because it does not work the first time or we can not find the right way. In “The Marble Champ,” by Gary Soto, Lupe Medrano the main character, has a very hard time with sports. She is not good at any of them. The theme in The Marble Champ seen by Lupes experience is to always stay determined, and never give up. We see Lupe demonstrate this all throughout the story.
She explains how her son was just pushed through school. “Our youngest, a world-class charmer, did litter to develop his intellectual talent but always got by” (559). He got through school by being a good kid, he was quiet and didn’t get in trouble. This was how he made it to his senior year until Mrs. Stifter’s English class. Her son sat in the back of the room talking to his friends; and when Mary told her to just move him “believing the embarrassment would get him to settle down” (559) Mrs. Stifter just told her “I don’t move seniors I flunk them” (559). He begins with putting an emphasis towards a great coach and what he or she has to offer. He believes that a coach can have a huge impact on a child’s life. He adds that a coach can be a great role model for athletes and teach them beneficial life skills. Stallworth believes that a strong coach and a committed athlete can go a great distance together and can achieve more than imaginable. He states that there is so much to be learned and much of it is not offered in an actual classroom. Chapter 1 has familiarity in my life. In the 8th Grade my father moved us to the Midwest from Southern California; culture shock! Dad decided that I should play football at the Junior High, after all my cousin played on the team, and so did my father when he was in school. Most of the other players were a minimum of one year older than me. It is common practice for parents to hold their boys back a year to start school; this gives the boys a size advantage in sports. By the time adolescence rolls around, one year makes a big difference in a young man’s size. Also, I was born in November; not a prime year for sports league cut-offs. When it came playing football, I was severely outsized by my teammates. Due to my experience, I tend to agree with having sports league try-outs split into semesters or trimesters to allow the same opportunities available to more players.
We were going to win the game. That was the end of it. I knew it. We were the winners of that game. I stood up and yelled in a voice that even frightened me. I didn’t scream about moving our feet, or calling the ball, I screamed about how big of winners we were. I was done with moping. For seven minutes of my life, I had forgotten that I could do anything I set my mind to, and I had given up. The worst seven minutes of my volleyball career were those seven minutes in the third game of the final match at Brighton Volleyball Tournament. I had put my determination down to wallow in my disappointment. Disappointment needs to build determination. I had decided a long time ago that there were certain things in life that I could do better than other people. Those were my gifts. I use my gifts to my full potential.
All of a sudden, he was running for his life. At least, that’s what it had felt like to him. After all, lacrosse was his life. He was playing for his future tonight. The second the ball went into play, he felt the familiar and almost comforting rush of adrenaline seeping into his veins. He chased after the ball like it was the only thing in the world that mattered, and right then, it was. Scouts from three different National Lacrosse League teams were here tonight in this stadium, all watching this game. His game. Everyone wants to get better at something, but some want it more than others. In “How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium”, the narrator wants to get better at basketball, so he wakes up everyday at 4:30 to go with his dad to his work. Everyday, the narrator would wait 3 hours in his dad’s car until the gym opened, only to sit on the bench and watch the other men play basketball. Finally, one of the best players, Dante, tells the narrator he can play but he’ll get “smoked”. However, the narrator proved him wrong. The athlete and really the sport overall I chose to focus on throughout the course of this paper is the football player and the mindset in which he operates, while in what seems to become his natural environment and other factors which may alter that mindset in a positive or negative way. Having experience as a football player from my youth until present day helps to really analyze the mindset and thinking of this specific athlete and express through experiences my thoughts and feelings concerning my research found. Paul Bear Bryant a very well-known and respected coach for many years in the college football world once said, “When you make a mistake, there are only three things you should ever do about it: admit it, learn from it, and don’t repeat it.” This quote is an excellent example of football psychology and the type of thinking a football player must have, which is also helpful to have off the field. Mistakes are going to happen, learn from them and get better. Football is all about training the mind, which alters the behavior on the field.
His mother was home, but she gave up because of Junior’s sister who lived in their basement all alone. Junior never had anyone who encouraged him as much as Mr. P did who was his geometry teacher when he was still at the reservation (Rez). On the first day of high school Junior threw his geometry textbook, at Mr. P. He got suspended, but the next day, he got a visit from Mr. P. Mr. P explained to Junior that “You were right to throw that book at me. I deserved to get smashed in the face for what I’ve done to Indians.” This quotation tells us that Mr. P accepts that Junior threw the book at his face, he is not happy about it, but he says he deserves to be punished for what he have done to Indians in his past. He wants Junior to be treated properly and wants the best for Junior. Mr. P does not want Junior to give up like the rest of the kids at the rez did. “You can’t give up. You won’t give up. You threw that book in my face because somewhere inside you refuse to give up.” Mr. P knows Junior can go far but if he stays at Rez than all the other kids who have already given up will influence Junior to do the same.

To change the perspective of ones mind, helps them break down a bad situation, and analyzes the possible ways to act out, help gain a feeling of how another person might feel, and ways to become a better problem solver. “Negative emotions give birth to negative reactions” (Solarin). As this quote represents, one acts how one feels, and if the individual has a different mindset, their mind would be matured, and they will have the ability to think deeply about the way they should act. There are a few steps to help the process of thinking positive, (1) spend time with positive people, (2) take responsibility for ones behavior, (3) contribute to the community, (4) read positive and inspirational material, (5) recognize and replace negative thoughts, (6) create a daily gratitude list (Morin). Something that is common amongst athletes is that they try to think in an “all-or-nothing” (Melemis) feel the need to be perfect all the time, and if it does not go perfect, they then think they failed. “The emotion you feel at any. Given time determines your perspective at that time. So, in order to see the positive side of any negative situation, you need to first change your emotion from the negative to the positive” (Solarin). In this case,
