There is not that many examples of outnumbered armies winning against their bigger opponents but Caesar used his small army to do so. Julius Caesar was a brilliant general and dictator for the Roman Empire. He was instrumental in the down fall of the Republic and the beginning of the Empire. Julius caesar was a masterful general and unbeatable when commanding his legions. In the article titled Vercingetorix and the Failure of Gallic Resistance, John Haywood explains how Caesar used the mistakes made by the Gauls to win a decisive victory over them at the battle of Gergovia. In the book The Fearsome Arsenal of Roman War Machines written by Moses Hadas he explains the romans amazing weapons and how they were used. “ They demonstrated their mastery on many occasions, notably in the siege of the old Gallic town of Avaricum in 52 B.C., which brought Julius Caesar a dramatic triumph over the Gauls”(Moses 92). This victory demonstrated the amazing capabilities of Caesar’s men and the weapons that they used. During this siege Caesar’s men built huge towers and ramps in order to infiltrate Avaricum and take down the stronghold.
