Lying is a common feature to human beings, and it plays an important role in allowing one to meet the expectations associated with the position that one occupies. Liars may differ in their motivation to lie, their preparedness to lie, or even the extent to which their lies will result in positive consequences for the relationship involved (Kraut, 1978). Lies can be beneficial, with no negative consequences, but other times they have catastrophic repercussions that may destroy one’s private and social life. Deceivers’ unconscious mind allowed them to minimise the leaking of deception cues, and object of deception improved the ability to detect lies, making it a cycle where one individual tries to outwit the other. As of now, our society accommodates the needs of people, and therefore people lack of the motivation that is needed to detect deception, relying only on their unconscious feeling of suspicion. Humans are in fact able to detect lies but at an unconscious level, as the old mind is better equipped and evolved to perceive the deception. According to the dual-process perspective, the conscious mind “corrects” the mistakes done by the unconscious mind. However, in this case the corrections are negative for the results, as the conscious mind corrects the assessments done unconsciously by the use of different cognitive bias (Gilbert, 1999). The only way to train yourself to not be deceived by general verbal and non-verbal is to overcome the bias, and fully rely on the unconscious suggestions that will be translated into conscious thoughts.
