Integrity, as discussed in class, is the ability to be personally accountable for your honor. Integrity and honor are similar since according to the Sewanee Honor Code, “one shall not lie, cheat, or steal.”
Integrity should be noteworthy for students because it can and most likely will affect their entire lives. As stated in the Common App Teacher Evaluation form, integrity is one of the deciding factors for colleges. Studying at a college can be the difference between the job a student wants and the only job a student can obtain.
There are several benefits to being part of a “community of trust” that are described in the University of Virginia’s “On My Honor Film.” One benefit mentioned in the video is a “community of trust” establishes a “level playing field” for students. Another benefit discussed is the “community of trust” creates a lasting effect that stays with a person throughout their life. One cause described in the article “Why Students Cheat” is that many students believe that they do not have enough time to finish an assignment or study for a test. As discussed in class, this may be due to the fact that students usually have seven different courses and sometimes homework from every course. Another reason mentioned in class was some students procrastinate until the last minute to finish an assignment or study for a test and end up with not enough time.
