Rikki Rogers once stated, “Strength doesn’t come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.” To me, this means that we as people grow stronger from experiences that life confronts us with. It is so easy to be happy and feel good when everything is going the way we want it to, but this becomes more of a challenge when times in our lives do not go the way we would like them to. However, it is by pushing through these tough times that makes us stronger people, and it teaches us to appreciate the good times more than we normally would. One artifact in my life often reminds me of this, and this special object is my competition leotard. This object means a lot to me, since it is so much more than just an article of clothing. It holds so many lessons, memories, and experiences, both good and not so good. To me, it represents the end result of so much hard …show more content…
When I wear it to competitions, I remember the difficult paths I persevered through, the hard work that helped me to achieve the skills I am now performing in my competitive routines, and the teamwork along the way, where all of us pushed each other to be our very best at these competitions and everywhere else in life. Wearing it is like the putting the star on top of the Christmas tree; at that point, all the preparations have been completed, and we now have the opportunity to show what we have achieved. When I look at this meaningful artifact, I am reminded of the competitions and all of those lessons I learned that I can apply to life. I have learned that I can be successful in life by hard work, good time management, perseverance, leadership, self-discipline, and teamwork. Gymnastics has taught me so much in my life, and my competition leotard is just that special object that reminds me that I can do whatever I put my mind
Now, I think back to the moment a few months ago when I earned my first pair of pointe shoes. Before that experience, I had always made an effort to become strong enough because I was determined to receive my first pair. Practice makes perfect, so I repeated the crushing relevés, popping my ankles by pushing them constantly until they felt shaky. I had invested blood, sweat and tears into these pointe shoes. It was sometimes difficult to remain motivated and
First, it teaches young athletes you need to earn rewards. In the article “Should Young Athletes get Participation Trophies” by A. Pawlowski it states, “If everyone gets a trophy it would not teach kids to earn or strive for something.” ( Today.com Nov. 2013) In another part of this article it
This recognition I received in 2015 sets me apart from other cheerleaders. Cheerleading is my passion and something I hope to never stop doing. I hope that once my time comes to an end, as a cheerleader I have the opportunity to be a head coach. Since been awarded I have noticed that more cheerleaders regardless of age, or level have come to me as their mentor seeking out advice on cheerleading. I am glad that others see me as someone they can come to, to seek advice, because I have been in their positions before at one time or another. I love to help out others in any way possible especially when it comes to something I am very passionate about. Recently, I have been able to become an assistant coach and I feel that being looked at as a mentor helps me tremendously, because they know that I am there to help them in as much as possible and that I know what I am talking about when it comes to cheerleading. I hope that by the time I graduate I will have impacted in a positive way all of their lives as
Ballet is an athletic art form that utilizes muscle control, flexibility, and physical strength. It requires extreme discipline from the dancers and takes an extreme amount of mental concentration. This discipline causes dancers to have success throughout life and specifically in academic studies. There are many ways that dance can affect the success of a person’s life; however, there are two in specific that make dancers generally more successful. To begin, ballet causes dancers to be self-motivated workers; dancers cannot rely on others to push them to be better, but must have the drive within themselves.
My time, energy, and heart go into all of my endeavors. Discipline was taught through the balance of academics and athletics. Gymnastics helped me perfect the art of time management. I am thankful gymnastics has given me all of these
I joined my school’s cross country team in the summer. At the beginning we performed pre-season workouts. The training was tough, but my proud personality and the very thought of what I had to gain kept me motivated and helped me push through the pain. Every time I felt like giving up or quitting, I would say to myself, “This pain is only temporary; remember that the reward will be permanent, and it will be worth the pain that I endure today.” I was able to push through the
Failure leads to disappointments but sometimes it can result in great lessons and successes. People can go through hard times, but if they stick it out and see it through, the failures and hard times can lead to success. This happened to me recently involving soccer. It was our second game of the high school season, and we were playing Northeastern. I had started the game and after the national anthem and the announcing of our names, the game whistle had blown, singling the start of the game. The first half went by slow it seemed to never end. With the end of the first half we were tied 0-0. The halftime talk was not very positive, understandably, considering we weren't playing well. Then the whistles blew again and we took the field to start
This will prove to be especially important as I move on to college, and as I embark on my journey of being a student athlete at the University of Nevada Reno. I know that being a student athlete will be challenging in the sense that I will have so many obligations and so little time; however, this mentality will further help me achieve my goals both athletically and academically, as I refuse to settle for anything less that what I am capable of achieving. I know that at times it will be tough, but I also know that quitting is not an option. If I were to stop in the middle of a race right when it got tough, I would never be able to experience the triumph of finishing. In the end, the glory of the fight is one of the most rewarding elements of
Sports play an important role in American culture, with the top four most popular being football, baseball, basketball and ice hockey. These professional athletes make millions of dollars through their annual salaries and endorsements. Many wonder how they got to where they are today and was it worth it. There are mixed messages about participating in sports as a child and how it affects their development. Some believe that sports will help their child develop better communication skills, self-confidence and build character, while others believe that young athletes will develop aggression traits such as bullying, competitiveness, and aggressiveness. Although some believe that sports participation as a child will lead to aggressive children, there is ample evidence through research that sports benefits a child’s cognitive, social, and, physical development.
Most people want to be great at something. Some want to be a great artist, a great musician, a great writer, but one of the most common goals I have seen is to be a great athlete. In the new Under Armor ads they focus of the greatest athletes in America. These are the athletes that will be representing America in the 2016 Olympics. One specifically showcases the Women’s Gymnastics team train in Under Armor gear as they prepare for the Olympics. At the end of the training montage the commercial says “It’s what you do in the dark, that puts you in the light”. Then their new campaign slogan #ruleyourself shows. In the background Matagi by MIA is playing and inciting a patriotism. This is claiming that if you dedicate yourself to Under Armor by
Nike is a very large brand, due to its size its target consumer is usually very broad. The brand motto is “Just Do It” which is meant to target ordinary people, showing that anyone can be an athlete and encourage health. This links it back to the Health Conscious City Dwellers as some of them do not necessarily exercise regularly but the NikeFuel bracelet makes exercise a part of the consumer’s everyday activities. Nike is usually associated with achievers, they endorse elite athletes in order to reinforce this ideal but also utilize the idea that it is possible for anyone to achieve greatness with the right amount of work. The NikeFuel’s slogan is “Motivation on your wrist”, sticking with Nike’s ideals of always encouraging
Every weekend hundreds of thousands of sports fans pack the stadiums of their favorite team and ruthlessly engage in fandom. Some fans tailgate before the game and casually support their team by sporting a jersey and team colors, while others may dress up in absurd outfits, like one Raiders fan who has dressed up in a gorilla suit for the last 16 years. From wicked costumes and body paint, to inappropriate jeers at opposing fans, Eric Simmons was determined to reach a conclusion as to why humans are so entrenched by sports. Simmons does not try to push the world in a certain direction, rather, he utilizes real-life examples, rhetorical questions, and studies and statistics to inform the reader on why fans have developed an intense love for
The blue ring represents determination. As an athlete, it is important that you do not give up no matter how difficult it may get. Every athlete does not win every time, so when you lose, you must get back up and try again. My coach and I trained so hard for the 50-yard breaststroke, my weakest event, yet I was trying to break the pool record. I was less than half a second off the record. When I got up on the block, I could feel the eyes of the spectators staring at me, I could feel my muscles tightening up, and I could feel the blisters forming on my hands from gripping the block. I dove in and I thought “perfect dive, Furgeson” and I swam. The wall right in front me…I slapped it…looked up to the timers. I got out, asked about time and he said, “33.50” …I missed the pool record by four tenths of a second. My heart dropped.
Within the essay, research has been collected to discuss formal and educational gymnastics. Reference to the national curriculum; old, current and new are used to justify why it is important to have physical education in the curriculum. Discussion about the 2007 and 2014 curriculums effect on gymnastics and why some teachers do teach gymnastic and others don’t.
Preparing for competition is easier said than done, you need a passion to complete the task. Competition is extremely stressful, but amazing at the same time. It?s a process of mixed emotions, not knowing if it?s importance will have a meaning in the end. Having practice six times a week allows us to work on our jumps, cheers, dances, tumbling, and the most difficult, stunting. Just the counts and lifting people in the air is traumatic enough, but repeating it over and over again it gets strenuous. Dancing is relaxing when you have counts to them, but when you have to learn the dance to the music people get confused and don?t know when to leave to the next formation. Team members start getting fed up with each other at the closing stages of practice, it?s just a natural human reaction after practicing with the same fifteen to twenty girls for three hours.
