Being alive today is an amazing feature in this town. In Kinston you learn how to move around and stay clear of danger, you live and adapt. Many don’t realize they’re adapting because it’s out of habit and natural. The longer we stay here the more we evolve around what’s going on. Sometimes we may ask ourselves;”Why are we like this?” But again, you wouldn’t be able to ask yourself this question if you were dead? A scientist that goes by the name of Charles Robert Darwin may have answered that question; “Why are we like this?”
Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, on February 12, 1809. He was the second youngest of six children. Darwin came from a long line of scientists. His father, Dr. R.W. Darwin, was as a medical doctor, and his grandfather, Dr. Erasmus Darwin, was a renowned botanist. He lost his mother when he was 8 years old. Darwin graduated from Christ’s college with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1831. After he graduated Henslow recommended him for a naturalist position on the HMS Beagle. The ship was commanded by Captain Robert Fitzroy, and was scheduled to go on a 5 year trip around the world. The voyage began on December 27, 1831 with Darwin on board. While on this trip Darwin collected a variety of natural specimens, including birds, plants and fossils and through hands-on experiments, he had opportunities to further explore botany, geology, and zoology. With his return to England wrote up his findings in the journal of researches, which was published as part of the Captains Fitzroy narrative before it was edited to become the Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle.
