Charles Dickens Historic A Christmas Carol Charles Dickens wrote the novel A Christmas Carol because he believed that he can have an influence on the situation in England in the 19th century(Bio). He included the character’s greed and want that are a part of Scrooge during his visits with the Ghosts of Christmas. Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth, England. He was the second of eight children, and his father, John drove them into poverty. John was sent to prison for debt in 1824 when Dickens was twelve years of age. Dickens worked in an unsanitary boot-blacking factory to provide money to his family, leaving school entirely. Although he started earning a fair amount of money at his factory job, he strived for educational …show more content…
It is evident that he revealed these ideas in his books based off his words through his tours and the real-life settings and scenarios that he carefully selected. His novels A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist were his most popular and influential books(Bio). He was not able to complete his last novel, however, because he died at age 58 of a stroke. Dickens would die with the feeling of abandonment by the people who were supposed to take care of …show more content…
Dickens had the cold hearted character Scrooge portray someone who changed his lifestyle and brought several families together to get through a time of great poverty. He planted several characters in the novel to represent impoverished people during the 19th century and what generosity of the wealthy could do to them and the town(Gevatheatre). Dickens never had someone take care of him as a child and he went his whole life with a feeling of abandonment(Gevatheatre). Dickens used realism in his novel to inspire change in the way that the wealthy treat the impoverished families and children, particularly by making the child Tiny Tim’s life rest in the hands of Scrooge in The Christmas Carol
Scrooge was and owner of a factory and made a whole bunch of money, but he did not care about anyone else. “Merry Christmas said his nephew, what right do have to be merry you are poor enough”. This shows that scrooge is mean to family and does not care about Christmas.
Charles Dickens born February 7th 1812 – 9th June 1870 is a highly remarkable novelist who had a vision to change wealthy people’s scrutiny on the underprivileged and by fulfilling the dream he writes novels. Furthermore, I think that Dickens wrote about poverty as he had experiences this awful incident in his upbringings.
...rt of the story Scrooge is a miserable man who hates nearly everything and everyone, he treats people like they’re nothing to him and he is everyone’s superior, emphasising how the rich would’ve acted to poor people back in the Dickensian era. The book also relates to the biblical story of “Saul or Paul” and how he changes in the Bible, the book is also important for adults as well as children as it highlights what they can do to change. The sudden realisation of how the poor were treated has lead to a welfare state being produced by the government to be more charitable to the poor and financially help them, to highlight the success of the book almost every Christmas story is based on it and there are a lot films based on the book, it shows how popular and morally correct the book is as the book is still relevant to helping those less fortunate than us even now.
Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol has three main themes in the book that really stand out. The main character that will be talked about is Ebenezer Scrooge and how he transforms throughout the book. Scrooge is known as a grump of a man and very kept to himself. In the story the ghosts of past, present, and future come into contact with Scrooge and take him through their stages. While Scrooge is receiving the Ghosts help It they take him through him isolating himself from people and the world, the ghost of christmas present shows transformation and last but not least, the ghost of christmas past shows Scrooge and his compassion and forgiveness.
In A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens expresses his belief on changing ones personality. The moral of A Christmas Carol is "People can make changes in their lives whenever they really want to, even right up to the end." Charles Dickens shows the moral by haveing Scrooge change his personality. In the begining of A Christmas Carol Scrooge is a cold and almost heartless man, Scrooge doesn't like Christmas or anything to do with it. Scrooge keeps to himself a lot, he does not like having people around him, not even his own family. Scrooge had a partner named Marley, Marley was just as bad as Scrooge is. Because of Marley's foul behavior he is condemed to an eternity of carrying heavy chains. One night Marley appears before Scrooge and warns him that if he continues being the kind of person that he is, he will face a destiny much worse than what Marley is facing.
Over time, Scrooge helps the Cratchits out and becomes like a second father to Tiny Tim who doesn’t end up dying like the ghost predicted. People are confused by Scrooge's sudden change in behavior, but he just goes on without any regard to it. The narrator closes the story with a final, impressionable statement, "and so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless us, Every one!"
In my coursework I am going to analyse what Charles Dickens’ ‘Ghost of an Idea’ is and how the idea is portrayed at the beginning of Stave 1. Charles Dickens wanted to change people’s lives and their opinions about the horrors of the poor and the middle-class all because of how he was treated as a child. The cold-hearted capitalism which ruled the society at that time was businesses owned by private people and all they care about was money and how they could make it. They didn’t care about other people’s welfare the working classes were livening in small houses in cramped streets and not a lot of food as they cannot afford it. I think that Charles Dickens was trying to imply to the readers that rich people will find true joy and love through sharing with the poor however he influences the way people thought about Christmas. Charles Dickens separated his books into staves in the first stave Scrooge was visited by the ‘ghost of Marley’, the second stave he is visited by the ‘ghost of Christmas past’, the third stave he was visited by the ghost of the Christmas present, the fourth stave the ‘ghost of Christmas Yet to Come’ and the fifth stave is the ending. The structure of the novella determined by what is in the story in this case in stave 2, 3 and 4 were Scrooge is visited by the three ghosts. However the first stave Marley’s ghost introduces what Scrooge was like as a person to begin with and his feelings. Stave 5 show us how Scrooge has changed since stave 1.
In Conclusion, in the 1st Stave Dickens presents Scrooge as an evil, aged, prosperous man. As you read the Staves 2, 3 and 4, Scrooge’s behaviour, thoughts and attitude changes gradually. In Stave 2 a quote to show how shrude Scrooge is 'All he could make out was that it was still very foggy and extremely cold' this shows that Scrooge is an unpleasant ‘a covetous sinner’. This has an effect upon the reader as it shows how the cold weather can hurt and be distasteful to people just like Scrooge. Scrooge is described as the weather as he is like it; he hurts the people around him. Finally, in the 4th Stave he changes and he admits it, here is a quote “Spirit!'' he cried, tight clutching at its robe, “hear me! I am not the man I was.” This shows Scrooge is pleading that he has changed. I think he has transformed because of the experience he had by the four spirits.
At that point in time Christmas had become just another day to people, more so for businessmen who “scheduled regular business meetings on Christmas day” (BBCNews), Christmas had more than begun to lose its meaning and impact to the people of the time. After the book was published Dickens was given credit for laying out the blueprint for how Christmas was to look, according to what BBCNews reported. This blueprint of Christmas being a white scene with an abundance of generosity, and the concept of turning a stone cold soul into a kind one in time for the holidays managed to carry itself into modern movies that are geared towards the Christmas season. One of the two previously stated pieces of the blueprint are seen in most Christmas specials. Whether it be a generous Christmas or a stingy Christmas can be seen in nearly every, if not, all Christmas specials. In addition to that, the story itself has been adapted into numerous different but yet similar seasonal films. So, by Dickens’s book being revived every now and again with a fresh new director producing a movie for it, the spirit of A Christmas Carol continues to live on and influence a new generation of Christmas participants to be kind and generous to others during this time even after the allure of “presents from Santa for being a good little boy or girl” as many parents would tell their
In both the cinema and the chronicle, Scrooge (the main character) absolutely hated Christmas. His feeling toward the holiday always made him yell “Bah humbug!”, in both of the sources for A Christmas Carol. Along with this information, Scrooge also saw a Christmas spirit, or apparition. In both the flick and tale, he promised the ghost he would hold Christmas in his heart forever and let the spirits present, past, and future strive
Charles Dickens went through a lot of rough times in his life and ended up on top. He came from being a normal middle class citizen to being one of the most popular people in the world. His books have been read, translated and made into motion pictures. They have been read and watched by people for years and will still be in years to come. Charles Dickens’s personal life grew increasingly unhappy and drove him to an early death. But His work remains, funny, sad, warm, and stunning.
Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is one of the greatest and most popular writers in the history of literature. In his novels, Dickens combines masterly storytelling, humor, pathos, and irony with sharp social criticism and acute observation of people and places, both real and imagined.
His novels are still used in English classes today as either required reading or courses of study. Per Donald Hawes, “Dickens ranks with Shakespeare as the most widely read English author” (Hawes 10). I remember having to read A Tale of Two Cities for required reading in High School as well as Great Expectations in class. His ability to bring his characters to life is outstanding and would draw you into the book as if you were there. He could make you laugh and cry all in the same book. I also remember watching Oliver Twist, the musical version in middle school chorus. It was the beginning of my love for musicals which continues today. His work also continues to influence children with the adaptations of A Christmas Carol movies. Charles Dickens influenced me personally and gave me a new appreciation of great literature. Donald Hawes says it best, “Enter a Dickens novel and you enter a highly charged, multitudinous world, in which realism and imagination are interfused as never before, or since” (Hawes
Dickens attended school off and on until he was 15, and then left for good. He enjoyed reading and was especially fond of adventure stories, fairy tales, and novels. He was influenced by such earlier English writers as William Shakespeare, Tobias Smollet, and Henry Fielding. However, most of the knowledge he later used as an author came from his environment around him. 4
Dickens turned out to be one of the most popular writers already being young. when he was thirty he already was one of the most successful authors of England. at the time he was forty he was one of the most popular celebrities for literature i the whole world. it was hard for others to accomplish what Charles did because he received really good critics and worldwide success.
