Moving into a country of unfamiliar traditions and eccentric society, I faced a lot of challenges. However, it was these challenges that provided me with the determination and dedication to work hard and strive for success. I was born into an athletic and educated family in Ecuador, and day after day without stopping I gave my best to achieve my gymnastics and educational goals. Falls, injuries, and tears were rewarded with reputation, pride and gold. Those medals and awards had more emotional value than material, and they came to symbolize all my effort.

Everything started when my brother had braces and I always wanted braces too, but at my young age, I could not understand why his dentist said to me that I was blessed to have perfect teeth. People always complimented me for my smile and many have asked me, and even now, if I wore braces but I never did. That is when I started researching and realized that genetics as well as eating the right foods and even breastfeeding play an important role in developing straight teeth. Due to this, my interest in science, especially biology and research originated and since then, I have always been drawn to the natural processes of the body. Starting my sophomore year in college, I had the opportunity to be part of CSUN’s research laboratory program in which I was a co-author for the project titled “Hierarchy of anti-clumping salts” in 2015 in Boston. I was involved in cancer and developmental biology research as well as microbiology research and is something that I would love to continue pursuing during dental school in order to find answers to challenging, unresolved problems and to finding possible cures for diseases, as well as how to prevent …show more content…

I witnessed a number of procedures from dental hygiene to the most complex such as dental implants. There is a very distinct language barrier that exists which also impedes the doctor’s ability to deliver the care they need. I came to realize the importance of diversity among doctors to serve communities who have limited access to dental care. I will never forget a seventeen-year-old patient that needed extractions and only had few teeth left. Many patients at MEND do not realize that their bad habits, such as smoking, can cause a permanent condition like periodontal disease. Lack of awareness of oral health has affected the health of my people in this community and by entering into this profession I plan to change that by implementing more resources for people to get more education about oral health. Furthermore, it was at MEND where I learned to help and care for others and where I met one of the most influential people in my career Dr. Robert G Hale, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, who inspired me to pursue oral surgery. Now, I am beyond blessed to have the opportunity to work and learn from him.
