Why I Want To Become A Pediatric Oncologist

I am who I am today, because I beat death against all odds. When I was a child, my doctor diagnosed me with stage IV Neuroblastoma. My doctor told my parents that I had a 25% of surviving, and if I were to survive that I would have a learning disability. The fact that I survived and did not develop the predicted learning disability was a miracle, and has influenced and inspired me in numerous ways. My childhood experience has not only molded me into a determined, hardworking young adult, but also inspired me to become a pediatric oncologist.

To achieve my career goal, I must first achieve my academic goal of gaining admission into medical school. In addition to maintaining academic excellence, I plan on achieving my academic goal by not only showing how medicine is a passion of mine, but also getting involved in my community and obtaining experience. This semester, I started getting involved in my community by volunteering at the university hospital. Although I am not receiving hands-on experience with patients, I am more than happy to support my local hospital by volunteering my time so patients have the best experience possible. These leadership roles include becoming a peer advisor through a mentoring program and becoming a program director for my hospital volunteer unit. As a peer advisor, I want to provide freshman and transfer-students a support system, advise them on different opportunities available in the community, and encourage academic excellence. As a program director I will demonstrate leadership by managing up to 25 volunteers and devoting my time to logistical and administrative
