I am who I am today, because I beat death against all odds. When I was a child, my doctor diagnosed me with stage IV Neuroblastoma. My doctor told my parents that I had a 25% of surviving, and if I were to survive that I would have a learning disability. The fact that I survived and did not develop the predicted learning disability was a miracle, and has influenced and inspired me in numerous ways. My childhood experience has not only molded me into a determined, hardworking young adult, but also inspired me to become a pediatric oncologist.
To achieve my career goal, I must first achieve my academic goal of gaining admission into medical school. In addition to maintaining academic excellence, I plan on achieving my academic goal by not only showing how medicine is a passion of mine, but also getting involved in my community and obtaining experience. This semester, I started getting involved in my community by volunteering at the university hospital. Although I am not receiving hands-on experience with patients, I am more than happy to support my local hospital by volunteering my time so patients have the best experience possible. I did not involve myself in any other extracurricular activities this semester, because I wanted to focus on grades and the transition from a high school workload to a college workload.

These leadership roles include becoming a peer advisor through a mentoring program and becoming a program director for my hospital volunteer unit. As a peer advisor, I want to provide freshman and transfer-students a support system, advise them on different opportunities available in the community, and encourage academic excellence. As a program director I will demonstrate leadership by managing up to 25 volunteers and devoting my time to logistical and administrative
As a student that is currently seeking a career in the medical professions, I have had to routinely contemplate my reasons for pursuing such an extensive education program in a field that is constantly demanding excessive time and effort. I know of students—many friends and acquaintances of mine included—that have the most sure-fire, inspirational stories that align with their desire to become doctors, surgeons, physician assistants, etc. They always seemed to have a story that emphasized their desire to “give back” what they have received from the medical community. Because of that, ever since the beginning of high school, I have been trying to find an extraordinary reason, a purpose for my medical pursuits. Perhaps I could justify my passion for
I aspire to exceed expectations in this field and work with doctors to access possible conditions. As a student who has always been passionate about science and excelled in these areas, I have had the opportunity to share my knowledge while assisting a physics instructor in the laboratory with experiments he plans to introduce in future classes and while tutoring struggling students in Chemistry, A&P, and Statistics. This has been a rewarding experience for me as I desire to see others succeed. This has also allowed me to stay sharp in these areas and has helped me learn to communicate more effectively; both of which will be beneficial to my program. This year, I’ve had the honor of instructing a science club at a private school where I led a group of students through hands-on learning projects and experimentations. Although I demonstrate a strong background in Science, I knew it would be important to gain some medical experience. I was fortunate to be able to volunteer at a local women’s health clinic with the head sonographer beginning August 2017 and continuing for 1 year until classes begin in the
Presently, my extracurricular and academic interests are combined in my two year Health Science class. The class provides real-life medical situations that I may come in contact with in the future. Like any health science class, we study the body, in both its’ functional and dysfunctional state. This survey class also includes an introduction to equipment, medical protocol, and ethical issues. A sense of teamwork guides our procedures. Next semester, I will study at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Ramstein High School’s Career Practicum program. After initial on-the-job application of classroom learning, we will work with patients, supervised by the hospital staff. Living so close to a hospital that services thousands of seriously injured patients every year provides opportunities that other students lack, even in their college programs.
Although some individuals may believe that it was a miracle that my father survived cancer, it was much more than that. The optimism of my family, friends, and loved ones enabled my dad to relieve his stress and focus on his cancer treatment. This situation has changed my mindset in life and it has provoked me to stay hopeful even when the odds are not in my favor. I’ve began to use positive thinking to help guide myself to my ambitions. This made my transition into adulthood much easier because I was prepared to deal with difficult situations. I began to cherish my loved ones even more than before. I realized all the luxuries that I had received and took for granted. I learned that the most important people in life is your family and without them, it’s near impossible to be successful. If my father had lost his fight, I would have had to become more independent as I would become the man of the house. Going into adulthood, I’ve learned that I should take situations into my owns hands rathering that relying on others. Some people that may be there for you today, may not be there
I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. He explained that a career in the medical field was about responsibility, the responsibility to work with all members of the healthcare team for the well-being of the patient as well as their family
I have been very involved in a variety of science and technology programs including the Healthcare Students of America. I also have taken a variety of rigorous to prepare me to be successful in this field. This environment these programs have provided me with have already been very beneficial, and will be even more so in the future. I have immersed myself in rigorous programs aimed at preparing me for my future. Participating in Grady’s summer volunteer program will give me the resources and environment necessary to further pursue these interests and enable me to become knowledgeable and versatile in the healthcare field.
Attending medical school has always been my dream and after a few experiences, it seems like the right career path for me. After choosing medical school as my final career goal, I researched many areas, but one specialty caught my eye: pediatrics. Children diagnosed with illnesses have always inspired me to be thankful for what I have and therefore, it seemed appropriate to give back. To understand what I will experience, I began to volunteer as an information desk volunteer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. During one of my shifts, I delivered mail to the families in the NICU, the neonatal intensive care unit.
My desire is to merge my passion for helping others and love of problem solving with medicine to ultimately become a Pathologist. I have been admitted to the competitive Interprofessional Healthcare Residential College at University of Kentucky (UK). This Living Learning Community Program is specially designed for student who want to pursue a career in healthcare and will help me succeed as a Pre-Medical Laboratory Science major. I have chosen Pre-Medical Laboratory Science as my major to learn about genetics, hematology, physiological and pathological conditions which are critical to a patient’s diagnosis as a Pathologist. To achieve my career goals, I continually pursue academic and volunteer opportunities which increase my healthcare
I developed very fast in this lab and started to lead 2 studies from my third month in it as I am always fighter hard-working researcher, my passion, and ambition to learn more what push me forward. My practice and big experience in past year in my mentor Dr. X clinic helped me to get out with an idea of research because is see those patients in clinic how they become happy after that great invention that helps them back as normal persons again after advanced tumor surgery. I put two ideas about ENT oncology as my major is ENT and oncology, our supervisor accepted them and I lead both studies till we finish them from a month and submitted both abstracts to biggest oncology conference in Chicago which will be held in June. I became a core member
What do you hope to gain from your experience as a volunteer? What I hope to gain from this volunteering experience is a lifelong appreciation for what different types of doctors in different medical fields do to help the public. This would be a great opportunity to get a sense of leadership from a
Having the chance to be involved in health science and work with other students having the same interest to me is a great privilege for me, as a medical student. Health science gives me chances to explore my skills and enhance as a student through my personal life and my education being related to health care. In addition, health science gives me the opportunity to learn new things and give me the chance to practice and be more involved in what I love, medical. I am a well-rounded individual, involved in many different courses and classes. In my high school career, I have been involved in past medical classes, such as medical terminology during my freshman year, and also principals of health science which I am currently taking my sophomore year.
Being unaware of what the future held was something that became tough to handle. Watching my mother go through her treatments taught me to persist through any difficulty that I encounter. Towards the end, she looked like a shell of a person, but still in some way managed to be a beacon of hope, saying that she would be the miracle and the one to defy the odds. Her positivity when faced with these terrible circumstances gave me a fresh outlook on life. I began to understand how unpredictable the world is and how it can all change in the blink of an eye.
Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. Upon entering my career, I had assumed that professional and financial success would surely bring personal fulfillment. This realization triggered a process of self-searching that led me to medicine. The commitment to provide others with healthcare is a serious decision for anyone. As I examined my interests and goals, however, I underwent a process of personal growth that has propelled me towards a career as a physician. A career in medicine will allow me to integrate thoroughly my passion for science into a public-service framework. Since childhood, I have loved acquiring scientific knowledge, particularly involving biological processes. During my undergraduate studies, I displayed my ability to juggle competing demands while still maintaining my academic focus; I have succeeded at school while volunteering part time, spending time with family and friends, and working part-time. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. I planed to utilize my assets, namely my problem- solving affinity, strong work ethic, and interpersonal commitment, to craft a stimulating, personally rewarding career in medicine. I have taken stock of myself, considering my skills, experiences, and goals. I have looked to family and friends, some of whom are doctors, for advice. Because of this self-examination, I have decided to pursue a career in health care. The process has been difficult at times but always illuminating. Throughout it all, I have never lost confidence - the confidence that I will actively absorb all available medical knowledge, forge friendships with fellow students, and emerge from my training as a skilful and caring physician.
Top Choices for Future Careers Even though I am not even entering my high school career it is never too early to consider careers. My top choices for careers that I would like to pursue in the future would include a pediatric surgeon, general surgeon, and a lawyer. After taking multiple career aptitude tests, my results correspond with my interests. I would prefer to enter the field of medicine, because I enjoy helping people.
As a potential medical student, I will strive to be a tremendous asset to St. Christopher’s College of Medicine by devoting all my time and life to becoming an excellent physician. I believe that I am obligated to use my talents in a constructive manner, in a manner that benefits society. The medical career gives me the unique opportunity to express my talents while benefiting human life.
