Texas I chose Texas because it’s the state I know most about, I mean, I live there! The area of Texas is 268,597 square miles, among the biggest in the U.S.A! The population for this state is over 27 million. That’s a lot for a state if you think about it! Texas became part of the U.S on December 19th, 1845. Texas declared its independence from Mexico, and the USA had to make it a slave state in order to annex it, so the number of slave and non-slave states would be even. USA was ready to annex it, but Mexico would declare war if they went through with the annex. US wasn’t scared, though, and they decided to annex Texas. Mexico then declared war, US obviously won. The high temperature in July is around 94 degrees. All in all, Texas is a mostly hot, humid place. The capital of Texas is Austin, Texas. Texas’s government leans more republican than democratic. The flag is called the “Lone Star” flag because of the single star, which is white and the background behind the star is blue. On the top is a white horizontal stripe, and below that is a red stripe. The flower of Texas is the Bluebonnet, and for a good reason, too. They’re beautiful! Contrary to popular belief, it's actually not illegal to pick this flower, but if you choose to, be careful where you pick it. The state mammal of Texas is an armadillo, and the state dog is a Blue lacy! The largest city in texas is Houston, with San Antonio trailing close behind.
