Why Free College Succeeds
It would be idealistic if every American had the chance to attend college. Unfortunately, tuition free college is not possible with our current system. This moral and even philosophical issue should be one of the US’s top concerns. If public college were free our country would be more prosperous and happier as whole, we could keep up with job requirements that are constantly evolving with the times, and combat college affordability. College should be an equal opportunity for everyone, regardless of economic or social standing. Free college equates to a happier nation and a better quality of life. When only high income individuals can afford the high costs of college, that is simply not the case. The cost of college can lead lower income students, not to complete a college education. I think that the affordability of college should be one of our top concerns. Those who can't afford college and choose to take out financial loans are being crushed under mountains of debt and seas of fees. The amount of debt they accumulate can make it hard to live even a middle class lifestyle. In 2015 the total amount of student loan debt was estimated to be 1.3 trillion, which is over 39 percent higher than it was four years ago. The majority of financial aid is going to student loans. Free college would give lower income students the chance they deserve to find a fulfilling job, instead of being stuck at a low-wage job. For five years I chose not to go to college, because I couldn't afford it and was afraid of the massive amounts of debt. If college were free, I would have started sooner and not have wasted time. I have hope that the next generation will not have to stress about the cost, or to owe large amounts of money they don't have and aren't guaranteed to earn. Almost every person I know has college debt, from a few thousand to nearly fifty thousand. Some of them graduates who still can't find work in their field, and are working in fast food or retail. College should not be only a privilege for the wealthy, but a right for all of us. Only the people who are already extremely well-off can afford the price of getting a college degree in today's economy. I believe this gives the wealthy an advantage to keep making even more money while the poorer people stay poor or get worse by taking on debt.
