Should elders over the age of 75 not be permitted to drive?
Elders over the age of 75 years old should not be permitted to drive because they tend to get lost in familiar locations. They also have trouble following traffic signals. Also, sometimes; it’s hard for them to move their feet from the gas to the brake pedal. They usually cause accidents that can become very severe to other drivers on the road. At a certain age its time to give up their keys and just stop driving. Elders kids should try to encourage them to stop driving or even explain to them how dangerous it is for them to be on the road. But According to a recent study by Carnegie Mellon university in Pittsburgh, the AAA auto insuer AAA foundation for traffic safety “ Drivers over 65 ad older are more likely to get in traffic accidents “. According to the data drivers over the age of 75 years old and teenagers has the most fatal car crashes per 100 millions mile traveled. Along with elders, teenagers are mainly involved in more crashes which makes the rate rise higher. The blue line represents the numbers of crashes that was reported to police officers. Imagine sitting in a car with your good old pops. All of a sudden you look over and see he has blacked out, and is heading straight into another car. Now your pops is seriously injured ,and the people that were hit are in serious conditions. He is now depressed about what he has done and his health is plummeting. The entire family is stressed ,and now everyone’s lives are suffering. Do you wish you could’ve prevented this? I hope you said yes. If you said no, contact the nearest mental hospital near you! If there was yearly driving test and physical test this whole situation would have never happened. Sadly these situations have happened thousand maybe even million of times. Many older people are cashing more than ever because they will not give up their car keys when they need to say it is time to give up driving. We should defiantly propose that we take care of this issue by making them retake the exam. So many elderly are getting into wrecks and some are even driving on the wrong side of the road killing people. By proposing that we need to force the elderly to retake that driving exam every six months is to insure that they will be able to drive more safely on our public roads still today. A lot of people agree and dis-agree with the retaking idea of an exam, but it would be very beneficial to enforce this as a new law due to the high rising risks of older drivers. “Citizen Drivers over 65 may need retesting, limited licenses, and restricted hours of driving time because the number of car accidents involving seniors is rising” (Zarate, 2). We cannot keep people safe by allowing elderly people take over our roads creating a mass destruction on our poor young drivers. Making the elderly retake the driver’s exam is not currently legal in the state of Missouri due to equal rights, but it should become a law to help stop the elderly from crashing into other people or driving on the wrong side of the road. “Some will insist they are capable drivers despite all indications to the contrary. Motor vehicles accidents are the leading cause of deaths for teenagers in the United States. According to Vivian Hamilton, “Car crashes kill more teens each year than any other cause” (1). In 2010, seven teenagers from ages 16 to 19 died every day from motor vehicle crashes. In 2011, approximately 1972 young drivers, ages 15 to 20, were killed in motor vehicle crashes (Facts About Teen Drivers”). The age of which a person can drive legally varies from country to county. “Car accidents are the No. 1 cause of death of teens” says Cricket Fuller, he also says that “a quarter of all teen-driving crashes are attributed to distract driving”. Even though the death rate of teen drivers is going down, an average of seven deaths a day still occur (Kowalski). Debacco-Ernie had said that “any time a teen driver is out on the road after 10 p.m., the probability of them being involved in a crash increases dramatically” (Carr).
Teens only make up seventeen percent of the population today, but almost twenty percent of fatal crashes are due to teenagers behind the wheel. Growing numbers suggest to change the driving age to eighteen and some even believe that changing it to twenty-one may save even more lives. With a sixteen year old behind the wheel, accidents are even more likely to occur when compared to a seventeen year old (Boulard). With so much new technology in today’s society there are more distractions on the road than ever before; therefore the legal driving age should be raised to save more lives. If we do not act quickly then more lives will be lost.
Again, it makes the headlines; an older driver causes a dangerous automobile crash. As the amount of elderly driving has increased in the past decade, the risk for others to be out on the road has increased. In 2012, there were 36 million licensed older drivers in the United States. (Federal Highway Administration, Department of Transportation (US)) As a 34% increase from 1999, it has been noted that seniors are driving past their ability by an average of 10 years. (Federal Highway Administration, Department of Transportation (US)). Elderly continue to drive despite the prominent physiological changes that worsen as they age. The amount of automobile collisions suggests that prevention must occur in order to make the roads safer. By examining older drivers’ medical complications, older drivers must be retested to be able to drive a vehicle.
Teenagers are getting back on the roads and behind the wheel meaning the is a higher risk of accidents. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in 15-to 20-year olds. Automakers are creating ways to make their automobiles safer in order to reduce these deaths. Teenage drivers are inexperienced and need the extra protection to keep them safe if an incident was to occur. Automobile safety features are necessary for the teenage driver to stay protected and alert.

1. Introduction In developed countries, the population of older adult drivers is predicted to be the fastest growing driver segment in the next ten years (Casutt et al. 2014). As quality of life in these countries increases, older adult drivers are more likely to continue driving regardless of their age (Bélanger, Gagnon, and Yamin 2010). Their tendency to continue driving is increasing while complicating factors such as age-related sensory, physical, and cognitive changes, as well as complex modern traffic environments, pose increasing risks to the older adult populations.

Sixteen year olds are less experienced and are accident prone 2.43 percent more than eighteen year olds. According to Ted Gregory, a Chicago Tribune reporter, in New Jersey, teenagers start driving at the age of seventeen unlike other states with a driving age of sixteen. After the law was enacted, the percentage in fatal accidents dropped 33 percent. This report proves that as teenagers get older, car accidents are less likely to happen. Many would argue that age is just a number and eighteen year olds cause many car accidents as well.
