Imagine sitting in a car with your good old pops. All of a sudden you look over and see he has blacked out, and is heading straight into another car. Now your pops is seriously injured ,and the people that were hit are in serious conditions. He is now depressed about what he has done and his health is plummeting. The entire family is stressed ,and now everyone’s lives are suffering. Do you wish you could’ve prevented this? I hope you said yes. If you said no, contact the nearest mental hospital near you! If there was yearly driving test and physical test this whole situation would have never happened. Sadly these situations have happened thousand maybe even million of times. According to Carnegie Mellon University the casualties’ rate for drivers 85 years and older is 4 times more higher than it is for teenagers who are considered are most reckless drivers. Penndot statistics shows that the number of crashes involving drivers age 65 and older in 2013 was up 12 percent from five years before. Voanews indicates that in a lot of elderly drivers accidents they mistaken the gas pedal for the brakes or vice versa. One fatality crash can affect and impact people for their whole lives. These crashes can occur in seconds. According to cdc.gov there were nearly 5,700 elderly drivers that were killed. Police are already busy enough the more we can reduce their work the more it will help keep our community safer; not only in crashes but the police can also focus more on preventing drug deals and gang fights. Although those are some good strategies to prevent elderly crashes, if you are really concerned you should see how well they drive. According to aging-parents-and-elder-car.com some signs of bad driving are: they respond slowly to pedestrians,drive at uncontrollable speeds, and a reduction in the ability to focus or concentrate. If you see these signs you should talk to your doctor about the effects you are witnessing and ask if you should take their keys away. If your parents do not want to take away their keys, then you can ask your doctor for exercises that will reduce their chance of getting into a car accident. Even if it was possible that the exercises that the elderly do will prevent fatal crashes a lot if the elderlies show some symptoms and fail the driving test we should take action and take away their keys to prevent all the
