Throughout many years, education in school seems to have become more about the grade and not how well the student understands the class. To many kids it is important to get good grades, but is it possible that kids with lower grades can still know more about the class subject than those with higher grades? By students in schools worrying more about their letter grade, it can lead them to spend their energy just making the grade rather than spending their time in class actually learning about the subject. Each student learns in a different way, which is why it’s complicated to grade each student the same. The main courses in school are math, science, English, and history. They feel that they should be given options for classes such as how to do taxes, apply for college, how to fix their car, etc. By having classes that help students become more prepared for everyday things, they will have more interest in the course and not stress so much over getting a good grade while gaining nothing from the class. To go along with that, school has become a lot about memorizing the notes or equations and testing student on their memorization rather than knowledge. As an example, one student could have a 100%, or an A, in a class but have walked out not really knowing anything other than what they had to memorize for the test. But another student who doesn’t do their homework as often could know an extent amount about the topic of the class but not rewarded for their knowledge because they didn’t finish the work. Other situations of students having similar issues are the fact that some students take tests better than others. In other words, two teachers may give the same assignment two completely different grades based on their own grading style. This puts an incredible amount of stress on a student because they need to complete assignments that will satisfy their current teacher, whose expectations and grading style could be very similar or very different from the student’s previous teacher. Alfie Kohn believes that the influence grades have on a student’s life doesn’t help this situation, and may even make it worse by providing students with a false sense of security about their knowledge. In her article “From Degrading to De-grading”, she states that scores on tests can be largely based on how the test was written and what skills were tested (Kohn 240). Therefore, it is up to teachers to identify what topics students must master in order to be proficient and score well on standardized tests. But when the class is not structured with a consideration for the material used on such tests, students enter the test blind to the skills that they will be expected to know and use. Anyone can memorize a list of facts off a study guide and score well on a multiple choice test the next day, but skills such as analyzing literature and interpreting a handful of graphs containing data from a scientific experiment are skills that require time and hours of instruction to master.
How does the grading system and learning go together? What makes learning something gradable? How can the grading system determines a child 's knowledge based on a test alone? These questions have popped up in educators ' minds for years. General education classes are focused on expanding the intellectual horizon of students. Many of the classes for general education don’t have anything to do with specific career choices but are required regardless. While this seems to be nice and good on the surface, it has problems. If colleges only cared about letting students expand their horizons instead of helping people graduate in a timely manner, there would be many more “college surfers”. Those people go to college aimlessly in order to pass the time. They do not have a definite goal and are not able to get a degree in order to graduate and contribute as a member of society. This would mean that taxpayers are wasting millions of dollars for nothing. Although it is important to keep learning as you grow older, there also needs to be a bigger purpose to life than just class cruising. Perfect grades are what most students strive to achieve. Students seek the validity grades offer them and quickly move on after they receive it. Even though some argue that grades are a motivation behind learning, grades should be abolished because they diminish from actual learning and encourage students to think in unoriginal ways. But is this really helping a student succeed? How are they going to succeed if they have not gained any knowledge? It is not right for someone to give a student a grade they do not deserve. Stuart Rojstaczer in “Grade inflation Gone wild” has an interesting opinion on students. He says, “When students walk into a classroom knowing they can go through the motions and get a B+ or better, that’s what they tend to do, give minimal effort”(75).
Students use grades as a factor to show what they could be successful at in the future. If one is giving minimum effort and grades are all just “pass” it is hard to give comparison to one class over another. “Without an accurate representation that a traditional letter grading system provides, there is no easy way of knowing a student’s level of performance and knowledge” (8 Principal). If a student has no way of knowing if he or she has more success in math than in english, he or she will have a harder time picking a career.
Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment. With no consequences to these actions students will almost always take the easy way out when it comes to homework
“What makes a child gifted and talented may not always be good grades in school, but a different way of looking at the world and learning.” That’s what the senior United States Senator from Iowa Chuck Grassley once said. When students get a “F” on their exam, that does not necessary means they are stupid, or they do not know the material. It could only mean they have a different way of learning, or a different way of explaining the material which the teacher is not aware of. There are different ways of learning that students have, and there are different ways they apply their knowledge into real life. School should be a time to make mistakes in a safe environment that they can learn from, not a place that they are petrified to make a mistake for fear of retribution on their grade cards. Its time to change the school system to save future students from becoming stress crazed and to let them know that there is more to this world than a grade card and in the long run it is a very small fraction of life.
