Don’t Ban Dodgeball
Dodgeball was born over 200 years ago in Africa, where they used rocks to throw at each other and worked together as a team. The game is still played today and uses the same aspect of teamwork, but foam balls are used instead of rocks. Many people think that dodgeball is still too violent and shouldn’t exist. Dodgeball should not be banned in schools because it has health benefits, offers a challenge, and lets students look forward to going to school.
Playing dodgeball competitively can improve people’s health in many ways. Dodgeball is a sport where one is always running around the court. Running around a dodgeball court boosts cardiovascular health. It lowers blood pressure, improves circulation, and burns calories so one can work off that burger they just ate (Thompson 1). Also, catching dodgeballs improves hand-eye coordination. In order to have a better chance of winning the game, one must coordinate themselves to hit their opponents and anticipate where the ball will be thrown to catch it. The majority of these people see dodgeball as an act of bullying. Andrew Mead from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education says that games like dodgeball “don’t keep kids involved and physically active. They objectify slower students who don’t catch as well” (Heyes). There are numerous students who dread going to school and being lectured about utterly dull content. Most students don’t get the chance to play dodgeball because it has been banned in their school. States including New York and New Jersey have banned dodgeball completely (“Ducking and Dodging with Dodgeball”). They see it as an opportunity for athletic kids to throw balls as hard as they can and try to hurt non-athletic
