As a general rule I am not an advocate of working for free. I feel strongly that people are more likely to value what they have to pay for. We may queue for the free goodie bags and fight for the free gifts being handed out, but often those things end up at the back of a cupboard, untouched.
We have to value ourselves and putting a fair price on our efforts conveys our own sense of worth to our clients and customers. However, there are times when it is important to consider working for free.

It can be almost an audition, demonstration or interview, but is an important time to show a potential customer or client that we have the necessary skills and confidence to deliver the goods or services they are looking for.
- Newly qualified people often prefer to work for free for a time, until they have had more experience and become more confident. Not charging takes the pressure off and allows them to take their time and not feel the need to appear as super-confident and proficient.
- Putting something back into society is another reason why people may work for free. Some people may select certain clients or situations that they feel deserve not to have to pay. This is not charity work, but simply selecting situations that they feel are worthy or deserving of some good fortune.
- Working for free can provide an opportunity to learn new skills. We may volunteer to work as an assistant or apprentice in return for being taught some important enhancements to what we already know. This may be done as an exchange where we teach each other something in return, or we simply work as a volunteer and learn something instead of
The amount of credits per hour depends on the job. A more physically demanding or unpleasant job would receive more points than something less taxing. This is an effective way of contracting society because it has people working enough to get the necessary work done to drive the society without overworking and tapping out the worker. When Castle and Frazier discuss whether a community can survive on such little work, we understand that the people who are working are working with intent and without distractions and not under distracting supervision. It is also useful because it allows people to choose how to spend their time.
Along with if they are willing to put in the time, effort, and they heart into what they are doing even if they aren’t making the money they want and or deserve. Money plays a big part of what the United States is about nowadays. It’s the country that’s ran by money, rather being ran correctly. Attitude is important in everything that you do. Having a positive attitude about working can mean the difference between hating your job or absolutely loving it.
Paying people fairly is good for business. Underpay, and employees will eventually look for a better offer. Overpay, and the payroll budget and profitability will suffer. Companies pay for compensation data because the benefits exceed the costs. The amount companies spend on surveys is just a fraction of a percent of their total payroll costs.
The speaker is not a usual “face” to be speaking in this particular conference and the first four paragraphs concentrate on that aspect which defies the speaker’s main instinct of creating a relatable environment. In the introduction, the audience’s position in society is established: “people who make it their life’s work to make other people’s lives better” while the speaker portrays being “an actress” lower, less important and less respectful distancing the speaker from the audience even more. Before being relatable, the speaker concentrates gaining the audience’s trust by demonstrating knowledge and respect for what they do to make anyone’s life better.
Volunteering is productive. It also gives a satisfying feeling, knowing that one is helping people in need. Last year, in the process of getting confirmed in the Catholic Church, this writer preformed charity work such as serving food to homeless people at the Dorothy Day House. At first it seemed that doing charity work would be boring, but it was actually fun, helped people, and made a difference in their lives.
Volunteering is a large part many nonprofit organizations. A volunteer is choosing to donate their personal time and resources to the cause they support. By volunteering, an individual has an outlet to express their values or embrace a particular culture within pout society.

Voluntary organisations may work with statutory organisations and support the different roles that each service offers. This type of care service can cost for the volunteer, as it is their time and money that goes into working in these organisations. Even though they are volunteering and doing the job for free they still have to pay for their travel which could be anywhere which may be a negative factor for volunteers to think about before volunteering as they are working without pay so it could cause financial problems for them. Some work as rescuers, businessmen, consultants, a student, doctors, or even garbage men. Specifically, volunteering brings in revenue from nonprofits and “free” work. In fact, in 2009 an estimated value of $169 billion dollars was contributed to America in volunteer participation (Corporation for National and Community Service). Volunteers bring an unexpected abundance of revenue that appears in unpaid work. In addition, it enhances communication within a society. Significantly, volunteering provides insight from first hand experiences for the community’s wants and needs and if these wants and needs are being met by volunteers communicating their volunteer experiences (Young). When there is better communication within a community it is easier to understand what the wants and needs are for a society to better function. Finally, it provides services in many different forms. For instance, in a local sense volunteers can benefit many sectors such as public works and transportation; public safety, health, and human services; parks and recreation; and support functions (Young). Like stated above, it is evident that there are many different types of volunteer jobs that can be done and anyone can help by using their personal strengths to better the community. Most will agree that knowledge is the ‘key’ resource in this post-industrial economy. The challenge for many companies is developing an organization that creates and cultivates knowledge and learning. Pay plays a significant role in shaping workplace behavior. Most of the traditional pay systems reward the job the individual performs rather than the skills he/she brings to the job. The system is not being able to reward the things the company needs and this presents a barrier. The trend has moved away from pay for the value of the job, service and seniority.
