Performance-based Compensation - Pay for Performance Corporations are looking for new ways to improve employee performance as well as remain competitive. Pay for performance is one method some businesses are utilizing to improve employee performance. Performance-based compensation exists when compensation is tied directly to that portion of an individual’s performance that can be effectively measured. There are a number of ways in which this may be accomplished and a number of examples as well how it is applied. One of the oldest examples is taken from the ancient Egyptians, where slaves working in the pyramids were given bread for superior performance. Payment of commission for sales production is one of the methods used today. Most will agree that knowledge is the ‘key’ resource in this post-industrial economy. The challenge for many companies is developing an organization that creates and cultivates knowledge and learning. Pay plays a significant role in shaping workplace behavior. Most of the traditional pay systems reward the job the individual performs rather than the skills he/she brings to the job. The system is not being able to reward the things the company needs and this presents a barrier. The trend has moved away from pay for the value of the job, service and seniority. It is being replaced with paying for skills, knowledge, competency, performance and productivity, all which can be delivered through different invitations, from changes to base pay to introducing gainsharing. In Howard Zinn’s A People's History of the United States, we take a look at American history through a different lens, one that is not focused on over glorifying our history, but giving us history through the eyes of the people. “This is a nation of inconsistencies”, as so eloquently put by Mary Elizabeth Lease highlights a nation of people who exploited and sought to keep down those who they saw as inferior, reminding us of more than just one view on a nation’s history, especially from people and a gender who have not had an easy ride.

For those businesses whose primary purpose of their plan is to only meet compliance requirements could greatly benefit by developing a comprehensive benefit plan. This could help increase their return on investment. The value I believe a business may gain from Disney’s compensation plan is to appeal to competent workers, to maintain those workers, and to motivate workers to direct their energies towards achieving the goals of the organization. Companies can set up policies to conduct a market study on a regular basis to implement a real performance appraisal system and then work on retaining good employees and elimination of poor performing workers. Most proteins have a primary, secondary and tertiary structure, but some of them, like hemoglobin, also have a quaternary structure. The primary structure of a protein is represented by the ordered succession of its amino acids held together by covalent bonds. While in nature amino acids may possess either the D or L configuration, amino acids within proteins almost exclusively possess the latter, as this allows proteins to have binding sites with three-dimensional properties matching those of their ligands. From an evolutionary standpoint, the existence of D-amino acids in certain proteins and peptides is highly beneficial since many D-amino acid-containing peptides participate in defense roles. This group includes antibiotic activities of secreted peptides against neighboring bacteria as well as toxic effects of psycho-active peptides on larger predators. The mode of action for these peptides involves their insertion into another organism that often possesses defense mechanisms based on stereo-specific recognition, like in the case of proteolytic enzymes and antibodies. The presence of D-amino acids prevents the host’s defense system from recognizing and degrading the peptide (Kesssel,A. and Ben-Tal N. Have you ever thought how much progress the LGBT community has made and how it affects other people? The gay rights movement was and is currently a movement that “strives to end all discrimination towards the LGBT community” (Redlingshafer). As early as 1924, the Society for Human Rights in Chicago becomes United States’ earliest known gay rights organization (“Milestones in the American Gay Rights Movement”). However, most people recognize the Stonewall riot in 1969 as being the beginning of the gay rights movement. Almost ninety years later, society and the government have progressed over time and are still growing. Harvey Milk, author of “The Hope Speech”, was a politician who led a portion of the gay rights movement. Also, a more recent and well known leader of the movement is Dan Savage, the creator of the “It Gets Better Project”. The followers of the gay rights movement are not just homosexual. There are followers and supporters of every gender, race, and sexual orientation. The gay rights movement and its issues are represented in “The Hope Speech” by Harvey Milk.
