Why Americans should have longer vacations and more holidays

Americans deserve longer holidays and more vacations. The United States is the only developed country in the world that doesn’t have a mandated paid vacation days or holidays. In the European Union there are laws in place that mandate a four week vacation for their employees. Austria leads the pack with the most vacation days a total of 22, and 13 paid holidays.

The United States is the second-most productive developed country in the world using GDP per capita and has no mandatory vacation time, some might argue that vacation time reduces workers’ productivity. With the United States just coming out of a recession the majority of employees are reluctant to use any or all of their vacation time. Workers say they lack support from their bosses for using vacation time, or can find the right moment to take a vacation. With the unemployment rate still remaining high most companies are keeping staff to a minimum, and the average salaried worker is performing one and a half times the workload that they would normally handle. This leads the American worker to try to bring as much value to the company that is possible, and to also show the company that you’re a team player. Close to three quarters of the American workers tend to often check in with their employer while on vacation every day, or at least periodically. Employees are also reluctant to take vacations for fear of going deeper in debt, and not being able to save for future needs.
