Introduction

Academic tracking is a policy in which students are categorized into different kinds of educational programs based off of their intellectual interests, abilities, and achievements. There are different types of tracking including vocational, college preparatory, honors, and gifted and talented. Although tracking is mostly used in high schools, the policy is extremely effective, and results in many benefits. Whether or not academic tracking should be used in schools has been disputed for many years, but opponents fail to recognize the definite need for the protocol. A pre and post assessment were given to students enrolled in the course in the fall semester. This assessment asked students to record their confidence while completing certain tasks. According to sciencedaily.com, “Based on the pre- and post-assessment results compared with the students' academic performance, the change in confidence was an indication of student learning.” This quote clearly demonstrates how the academic tracking policy is beneficial to students since it indicates that they are able to complete their work both quicker and more efficiently. Additionally, Sage has researched the effects of academic tracking and found out that more students attempt to answer questions in classes that are academically advanced than those that are not. You may be asking yourself this question: How does this piece of information have anything to do with academic tracking. But actually, this study shows the benefit of academic tracking. Because students are not being overshadowed by their more advanced peers, they are able to exonerate their true capabilities, which raises their confidence when they reach a level of
