Commonly known to anthropologists around the world, the Piltdown Hoax was one of the greatest and most successful hoaxes in history. Even thought the scientific fraud had occurred over one hundred years ago, the forgery still draws attention because it has never been satisfactorily resolved. Though the main culprit appears to have been identified, Charles Dawson, the remaining doubt and suspicion around the event have not been confirmed or denied. Who was involved in the hoax? What evidence is there to prove it? Questions like these and many more have yet to be answered and are still under investigation.
In 1912, an amateur archaeologist who practiced law in the county of Sussex, England named Charles Dawson, announced what was thought to

be the missing link, which confirmed human evolution. What he unearthed were human-like skull fragments and a jaw with two teeth, along with a variety of animal fossils and primitive stone tools. Once Dawson discovered these bones and artifacts, he shared the news with his college Author Smith Woodward. The two, Pierre Teilhard, a seminary student who was also exploring the deposit, and Arthur Keithe, a trained anthropologist, all played a large role in these discoveries and the reconstruction process. Dawson and Woodward made the announcement to the British Museum that the bones and artifact belonged to a primitive hominid when they made their discoveries. Two men who shared skepticism about the age of the fossils, and the authenticity of the jaw and skull bone, and the disorganized pattern of the fossils being discovered were Kenneth Oakley and Joseph Weiner.
The two men thought of the event as a forgery from early on. With the doubt Oakley had, he performed a chemical analyses on the bone fragments and exposed the whole fraud, showing that not a single bone from Piltdown discovered was authentic. It was discovered that the jaw bone found was actually from a sub-fossil orangutan and the skull discovered was from a modern human who had a thick skull, thought to be from an Australian aborigine. The bones had been stained with potassium dichromate to make them appear older. Other bones were treated chemically to change the calcium phosphate to gypsum, or calcium sulphate. But who would to this and …show more content…
why? There are many theories that point fingers at different people involved in the event but nothing has been proven yet.
Most of the blame is put on Dawson since he was the person who discovered the Piltdown skull first and many other Piltdown fossils after the first discovery. A key point that points to him being the main suspect is the fact that no other evidence of the Piltdown Man was discovered after Charles Dawson’s death. Whether he was working alone or with accomplices is something still debated to this day. The three main accomplices believed to have worked with Dawson were Author Smith Woodward, Author Keithe and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Keithe and Woodward were the two main scientists who reconstructed the Piltdown Man and Teilhard worked with Dawson while he made the Piltdown discoveries.
Another question that arises regarding this is why was the public and the English scientists so willing to accept this discovery for so long? Some believe it is because the Europeans were so willing to accept the fact that their land was the origin of humankind. They did not like having another country possessing the origin of humankind and because they found this, it gave them a reason to believe that their land, in fact, was where humans originated. Though there was little evidence to prove this, the Europeans did not need it to believe the Piltdown
discoveries. Over all, there is still a lot of controversy surrounding the Piltdown Hoax. Many questions remain unanswered and reasons behind the hoax remain a mystery. Dawson is strongly believed to be the mastermind behind this hoax but it is still under investigation. His accomplices are even more of a mystery. The Piltdown Hoax was a hoax that remained believed for forty years and has since arose many questions.
The skeleton had a hideous impact to the community and was predicted by local investigators to be reasonably modern. To get better understanding and avoid confusion, a bone sample was sent to a laboratory in the USA for investigation and analysation using series of scientific
Humanity became fascinated with the idea of evolution with the work of Charles Darwin and the Scientific Revolution. People began hunting for fossils that would prove that man had an ape derived ancestry (Weiner, 1955). After various years of searching, a piece of physical evidence was found in England that was said to confirm the theory of evolution (Weiner, 1955).This confirmation came from Charles Dawson’s discoveries from 1908, that were announced publicly in 1912 (Thackeray, 2011). Dawson was believed to have found the fossil remains of the “missing link” between ape and human evolution, the reconstructed skull of Piltdown man (Augustine, 2006). The material was found in stratigraphical evidence and animal remains that were, at the time, adequate enough to confirm the antiquity of the remains (Weiner, 1955). In 1915, another specimen, Piltdown man II, was found further proving this theory (Augustine, 2006). However, this was merely a hoax proven by fluorine relative dating in 1953; the artifacts and bone fragments discovered turned out to be altered to fit the proposed scenario (Augustine, 2006). The skull found was actually composed of a human braincase that was younger than the complimentary orangutan lower jaw (Falk, 2011). Both sections of the skull had been stained to appear to be from the same person of the same age (Falk, 2011).The perpetrator of this act was never caught and there are many theories proposed for the motive of this hoax (Augustine, 2006). Many people have been taken into consideration for this crime, such as Chardin, Woodward, Hinton, and Dawson (Augustine, 2006). Nevertheless, the evidence that proves that Dawson is guilty of this crime against anthropology is quite substantial compared to the evidence...
1) What characteristics of a cult and/or conspiracy and/or moral panic do the case studies share? How are they different from one another?
The alarm has gone off, and it is time to start your daily routine, first a cup of coffee and the morning paper. As you begin to read the paper you notice an interesting article about a new discovery. Archaeologists have uncovered a lost civilization, or at least the remains of one not far from where you live. At first you are still groggy from hours of rest but as you read further each word intrigues you more. With so many people trusting what is written in the news and with the support of professionals in several fields of study, how could this not be of significance? You put the paper down having finished your cup of coffee and leave for the day never to return to the article again. This happens many times across the globe. An artifact is uncovered by a man on a walk with his dog or even a skeleton is discovered on an archaeological site, eventually the news spreads and becomes a major story but while many become believers there are still skeptics. Along with the skeptics there are professionals who refute the claims previously made, but no one is sure whom to side with. A similar case happened with the Bosnian Pyramids, a claim to fame for Bosnia but also an infamous case of pseudoarchaeology that still has its fair share of followers.
Evidence came from Christopher Columbus himself via his journal. According to the renowned American historian and linguist Leo Weiner of Howard University in Weiner’s book, “Africa and the Discovery of America,” he explains that “Columbus noted in his journal that the Native Americans confirmed “black skinned people had come from the south-east in boats, trading in gold-tipped spears.”Thus this entry into Columbus’s journal showed that he was fully aware that people had discovered the Americas before him. Columbus was not the only explorer to make note of the presence of the Africa upon their arrival into the new world explorers such as Vasco Nunez de Balboa, also made record of seeing “Negroes” when they reached the New
Christopher Columbus has been discredited with discovering America, because for thousands of years, Native Americans had thrived on the land he claimed he discovered. There are also claims that the Phoenicians, Jews, Romans, Hoei-shins, Vikings, and the Portuguese landed in America long before Columbus; but these claims have yet to be backed by solid evidence. Columbus was not the first person to be on the shores of America, or maybe not even the first European; but when he landed, he brought the new land to the attention of a growi...
In the early 1950’s, prior to Project MKUltra, the groundwork for underhanded scientific research was being laid. Immediately after World War II, the United States’ Office of Strategic Services - the predecessor to the Central Intelligence Agency - launched Operation Paperclip, a mission to prevent the Soviet Union from obtaining any wartime German scientific research or expertise, while exploiting those sources of information to directly benefit American programs. Over 700 German scientists were recruited by the US, both voluntarily and by force . These scientists were employed in various government programs depending on the focus of their research, but the OSS took special interest in the men who had pursued brainwashing and other controversial interrog...
Bigfoot’s existence can no longer be denied. No longer is it a question of Bigfoot being real, but rather a question of man’s capability in being able to believe the truth. The facts cannot be mistaken. Besides being seen time and time again, video footage has been collected. This alone is enough to make many believe, but for the rest, the physical evidence is unmistakably real. As the theory progresses, more and more credible researchers come forward to show support in such a creature’s existence. They do this at the risk of losing their own credibility. None, however, are capable of an explanation for Bigfoot’s uncanny ability to remain hidden from human observation, the nature of which remains to be a question. Perhaps, though, as more and more people start to believe in the truth, questions will be answered and the mystery solved.

Some time in July of 1947, a mysterious flying object zigzagged across the skies of New Mexico. Within twenty-four hours the object disappeared from radar just as mysteriously as it had appeared. It was last seen in a small town in the middle of the Arizona desert, it’s name, Roswell.
The chain of events that resulted in the deaths of 39 mislead men and women was set in effect by what could have been mechanical error. An amateur astronomer reported photographing a huge "Saturn-like object" trailing the tail of the comet Hale-Bopp. Applewhite received news of this young mans discovery. He came to the conclusion that this object was a UFO that was meant to take the cult members to the "next level".
With the advanced development of technology, specifically DNA analysis, the process of how historical research is conducted can divert from a traditional approach to a scientific method which can potentially avoid usual historical evidence. The article “Famous Viking Warrior Was a Woman, DNA Reveals”, by Judith Jesch, discusses an uncovered Viking grave that contained a skeleton along side items that are normally buried with warriors, and the skeleton's DNA was later tested to discover that the skeleton was a woman. With the found information, and DNA evidence, the archaeologists concluded that the skeleton was that of a great female Viking warrior leader. The analysis is debated through the article “Let's Debate Female Viking Warriors Yet Again” by a series of
The Roswell Incident, which enlightened our minds to the capacity of excepting all, has remained one of the most controversial issues today. In Roswell, New Mexico, 1947, a strange occurrence arises. An alien craft from outer space crashed in an open field. The issue lay still for almost thirty years, until the thought of a government cover-up arose.

The following essay will discuss falsification, as discussed by Karl Popper, as well has his account of the scientific method. The idea whether any scientific theory can truly be falsified will also be approached by looking at the problems presented by Popper’s theory of falsification, and the impact this has on the scientific method and science as a whole.
