On March 31, 1909 a titan was born. This titan was called the Titanic. The people who gazed upon this monster of a ship deemed it unsinkable, but as everyone knows it did sink. It may be surprising to learn that it wasn’t just the iceberg that caused the ship to sink. Many of the reasons behind the ship hitting the iceberg was thanks to the rich people aboard the ship. Miss Elizabeth Walton had a first hand account with this tragedy. The only reason she survived that horrible moment in history is because she was a very wealthy woman. The Titanic sank because the wealthy thought so highly of themselves that they forgot they were human just like all the poor people on the ship. She was 29 years of age when we she was aboard the Titanic. According to Soldner, Findlay, and Gowan, “ She was born in St. Louis on October 1, 1882.’ “ She was engaged to a British physician, Dr. James B. Mennell….” Herself and her entire family was heading back home to get Miss Elisabeth’s belongings so she could move to England. They all were aboard the Titanic under the same ticket number, 24160. Miss Elisabeth stayed in cabin B-5 while her family stayed in B-3. These cabins were among the most expensive and luxurious. When the ship hit the iceberg she rushed down to the lifeboats with her family, but the were denied the privilege to get on the lifeboat. Until she showed the the ticket number she had. “ She escaped with her relatives in lifeboat 2…… under the command of the fourth officer,” according to Soldner, Findlay, and Gowan.
