The Titanic is known as one of the most remarkable films of the 20th century and won Best Picture of the Year in 1998. This film was based on a real event that made headlines all across the world including in the New York Times. This tragedy was not supposed to have happened. The ship was built to be indestructible. So the event was certainly unexpected and tragic. The New York Times ran a headline stating The phrase “TITANIC SINKS” was part of the headline for the Boston Daily Globe, the London Herald, the Baltimore American, the Globe (of Toronto), and, of course, The New York Times after the historic wreck of 1912 [Here’s what the article (sans headline) looked like in The New York Times, courtesy of the Times Machine. –D.A.]” (Amlen, p.1). …show more content…
Feminist Criticism is suppressed in literature and film. In this case, one can use Feminist Criticism on the film The Titanic. Rose can be viewed as feminist. She is not a traditional woman of that time as she doesn’t care about what is appropriate behavior for men and what is appropriate behavior for women. Throughout the film, Rose shows how she doesn’t care about femininity and what the standard for women was back in 1912. Rose disregards what is for men and what is for women. There are a couple of examples within the film scenes that show how feminist criticism would say is not normal for women. The first example is the scene where Rose goes with Jack to see how he lives his life with the lower class population. He takes her to a party attended by the third class passengers. Rose grabs a beer and Jack looks at her oddly as this is not viewed as proper etiquette for a woman of Rose’s class. Rose’s response was: “What a first class girl can’t drink beer” (Titanic). This quote shows how the view on a first class lady is that they should be more classy and that beer is more appropriate for men that are lower class. Another example, is when Rose tells Jack, “to teach her to ride like a man, chew like a man, and spit like a man” (Titanic). Rose uses the phrase “like a man” showing that she is interested in doing things that are only viewed as male characteristics or
This British ocean liner was one of the biggest cruise ships ever made. The ship began its maiden voyage in the early morning of April 10, 1912 from Southampton, England to New York City. Mainly the ships 2,200 passengers were of deathly upper-class families looking for a good time in the city, while a smaller amount was people going to the city to find work. Many thought that when they board the ship, they were in for the trip of a lifetime. Well, that trip soon ended in tragedy. The Titanic sank early in the morning on the 15th when the ship hit an iceberg. Captain Edward J. Smith had the ship sailing full speed ahead despite the concerns about several icebergs. The ship received multiple warnings about dangerous ice fields in the North over the telegraph. General Corfield who was in charge of warning the captain of any obstacles along the way, said he failed to pass the warning along by senior radio operator, Jack Phillips. The “unsinkable” was actually built with very sinkable cheap material. It was built with low-grade iron rivets instead of the more expensive higher-grade material rivets. These small details easily could have been avoided (history.com
But one day the rumors came and everyone was talking about the unsinkable sinking they thought it was fake and so did the newspapers they said that the Titanic never sank that it was just a crazy rumor. But it wasn't a rumor, and when they got the new it was all they talked about for weeks many lost love ones in the disaster of the Titanic. People hoping that their loved ones were alive as the rescue boats were arriving hoping there was a chance of them being alive, but many were let down as the last of the lifeboats came many realized their loved one had
The Titanic claimed to be the ship of its time; one that would never sink. However, what the Titanic claimed to be was not the case because on April 15, 1912 the Titanic hit an iceberg, broke in half, and sunk to the bottom of the ocean. There has been debate ever since that fateful day as to how this happened to the Titanic. Some conspiracy theorist believe the ship never even sank -- regardless of the ships remains at the bottom of the ocean. Other conspiracy theorists believe the Titanic was actually switched with the RMS Olympic because of an insurance scam. Ever since that day, many scientists, engineers, and physicists have tried to analyze the problems of the Titanic; the reasons why it sank.
Feminist- someone who advocates for women's rights on the ground of political, social, and economic equality to men. Pearl did not necessarily do any of those things, but what she did do was not conform to what puritan society told her to do. An example of Pearl not conforming to society would be when Pearl was talking about the meeting she, her mother, and her father had.“Mother, said Pearl, was that the same minister that kissed me by the brook? Hold thy peace, dear little Pearl!" whispered her mother. "We must not always talk in the marketplace of what happens to us in the forest”( Hawthorne ). This is a good example of Pearl not conforming because after all she went threw and being told what she can or cannot do she still chooses to do what she wants
When you hear Titanic, what comes to mind? For many it is the love story of Jack and Rose. For others, it is the tragedy, that actually occurred, where thousands of men, women, and children lost their lives. The submergence of the ship, the story of an actual passenger on board, and why that passenger did or did not survive is all something that will become knowledge of the reader today. The sinking of the Titanic is one of the most remembered events in history, and there are few people still alive to tell their story.
Often when we think about the Titanic the first thought that comes to the mind is the film “Titanic” which was produced in 1997, 85 years after the disaster struck. It starred Kate Winslett (Rose DeWitt Bukater), Leonardo DiCaprio (Jack Dawson) And Billy Zane (Cal Hokley) as the main characters. The film is about a love triangle between the three main characters. This movie was produced by James Cameron who put enormous amount of research about the shipwreck of the titanic in order to depict the turn of events in his film. Amongst the purposes of his research he wanted to accurately depict the ship wreck itself from the very instant the ship hit the iceberg to the very last part of the ship that was subdued into the water. Another very significant part of Cameron’s research was to understand the socio-economic status of the passengers which will be discussed in detail later. Although historians have criticized certain aspects Cameron’s film the accuracy in which he depicts certain aspects such as the socio-economics of the passengers can’t be ignored.
We have all heard about the Titanic. Either we have watched the romance movie or done our research in a different way. No matter where we get our information from we know the biggest parts of the tragedy. The ship Titanic crashed into an iceberg on a cold April night on the Atlantic Ocean while sailing its first trip. But haven’t you ever wanted to know more details about? Maybe how the people who were on it and survived? How could the situation be prevented? Couldn’t they have saved more people? Well in the book “A Night to Remember” it has details on the Titanic you have probably never thought of knowing. While reading the first chapter some parts really caught my attention. One was when people felt the jolt from the collision with the ice berg people didn’t suspect what tragedy was to come. A girl named Marguerite Frolicher, who was accompanying her father on a business trip, woke up with a jump since she was half asleep she was thinking about ‘little white lake ferries’ landing sloppily which made her laugh and thought to herself “Isn’t it funny…we’re landing!”. They really did...
I find the story of the RMS Titanic very intriguing. Most everybody knows when it happened or how it happened, but very few people get to know the stories of the people that were passengers on the ill-fated ship. I was very lucky with the resources that I got, because most of them had quotes from the survivors. When reading the quotes, I got chills. I could picture myself in that freezing water or seeing my best friend or brother for the last time. The sinking of the RMS Titanic was a very sad ending of what was supposed to be a fairy-tale, and we can only hope that nothing like this happens ever again.
They were told “This is the Titanic, the unsinkable ship,” but what were they saying as the ship broke in two and began to sink. Did they all still believe that nothing could sink the magnificent Titanic? Or was the reality of the ship finally “sinking” in? These are questions today that people are still asking. The sinking of the Titanic was a tragic accident that still affects culture today.
The movie starts off with a largely male cast portraying the finders of the ship. In The Theory Toolbox the authors Jeffrey Nealon and Susan Searls Giroux state “And gender criticism might be said to get off the ground with the simple observation that the supposedly ‘universal’ subject has a very specific gender: masculine” (179). Seemingly, everyone who is an important character except for the actual protagonist of the story is a male, and more importantly mostly the male characters have dynamic character development. Rose is an upper class woman that is destined to marry the son of a wealthy steel tycoon. The desire to come to America and start a new life is inherently masculine, yet Rose is portrayed as someone who needs that. Throughout the movie she is abused by Cal and degraded, because even Rose (the protagonist) cannot escape from the inherent sexism that is portrayed in the movie. Although she is the protagonist, she is forced to be someone who conforms to the gender role established for her by society. When she is first introduced, she is seen molding a clay pot, something that is often associated with ...
The Titanic set voyage on April 1912 to New York. The Titanic and its sister ships, Olympia and Britannic were said to be virtually unsinkable by a magazine article, not the White Star Line. The Titanic was the second ship to set sail on its maiden voyage out of the three sister ships. The Titanic had been built a lot differently than most of the ships back then. For example, a normal ship was built with three funnels but the Titanic had four. The fourth funnel did not serve the same purpose like the other three; its use was for steam to be released from the kitchen. Another example was that the Titanic was the biggest ship at the time. The ship had received ice warnings at least six different times from ships but Captain Smith had ignored
There are many sociological issues addressed in the movie Titanic. There are three main issues that are presented, classism, sex and gender inequality, and ethnic inequalities. The main characters are each from different social classes which causes the uprise of problems on the ship. There is a great deal of wealthy men that feel they are the hierarchy out of most of the others who aboard. Besides the men and social issues there were also problems with the ethnic subgroup and many inequalities between the main group and them.
Feminism is a belief or ideology aimed at achieving social, ppolitical and economic equality for women. This push for equaliity amongst the sexes has enabled women to earn equal wages, to sign contracts, to own property amongst much more in the economic field. On a more personal level, women have been given the right to control their bodies and have been given more protection from abuse. It would appear as if Stella, of A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams, is a victim of abuse from Stanley, however she isnt so much a victim as she is an enabler because she accepts the abuse and does little in the way of prevention or avertion.
Within the context of film industry, the film Titanic by James Cameron belongs to epic romance/ disaster genre. The film, released in 1997, was a global box office hit because the director provided equal importance to history, fiction and romance. To be specific, one can see that the film’s plot is based upon the history of RMS Titanic. On the other side, the main characters including the protagonist and the heroine (Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater/Dawson) are fictional characters. Besides, the element of romance between the main characters (Jack and Rose) is the film’s main attraction. Thesis statement: The critical analysis of the film Titanic proves that the innovative mode of storytelling (flash back and other techniques), Acting, Cinematography, Editing, Sound, Style and Directing (equal importance to fictional and historical characters), Societal Impact, and Genre (epic romance/disaster) are the most important factors behind the film’s success as a historical/fictional masterpiece (special references specific shots, scenes, characters, stylistic devices and/or themes).
The historical implication of "Feminism" usually means "movement for recognition of the claims of woman for rights (legal, political, familial, etc.) equal to those possessed by men. It is said that Eve is depicted as made from "a supernumerary bone" of Adam; therefore, women have always been considered inferior to men. However, as Barnes suggests, "the minimal criteria for feminism" should include the claim for equal status, rights and roles with men. From the very early time, women began to strive fro their self-evaluation. The Enlightenment Movement and the American and French revolutions contributed a lot to the new rise of feminism. Such literary women as Austin, Brontës, Eliot and Dickenson appeared that time. In the early 20th century, women finally gained the suffrage which marked the climax of the women's liberation movement. In the 1960s, New Feminism concerned with the human rights for black people again came to its climax. This time, it was more pervasive and comprehensive in all fields of society, according feminist literary criticism found its way to critical theories.
