In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The cask of Amontillado,” Montresor, the narrator, is insane. In this story Montresor is the narrator. This story takes place in Italy. Montresor enemy is Fortunato. Fortunato had insulted Montresor, so Montresor wants revenge. Montresor's motto about when someone wrongs him is “Nemo me impune lacessit”, this means “Nobody attacks me without punishment.” Montressor takes Fortunato into the underground catacombs, where he plans to get revenge on Fortunato, by killing him. Montresor takes him into a room in the catacomb. He chains him to the wall and proceeds to build a wall to trap him, so he dies. Montresor is insane because he enjoys killing Fortunato.
Montresor proves his insanity when he enjoys listening to the screams of Fortunato while he is trapped. Montresor even says that it gives him satisfaction, “I laid the second tier, and the third, and the fourth; and then I heard the furious vibrations of the chain. The noise lasted for several minutes, during which, that I might hearken to it with the more satisfaction, I ceased my labors and sat down upon the bones.” Montresor gets amusement from listening to the shrieks of Fortunato. Instead he makes him suffer, “Unsheathing my rapier, I began to grope with it about the recess; but the thought of an instant reassured me. I placed my hand upon the solid fabric of the fabric of the catacombs and felt satisfied.
