Calleigh Hujet Mrs Gross ELA 8 March 20, 2024 Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi Have you ever felt misunderstood or lied to? Because Julliette in the book Shatter Me. The story by Tahereh Mafi is about a girl, Juliette Ferrars. Julliette has been locked away and tested on for years because she has powers, deadly powers. After years of being there, something strange happens, a boy gets thrown into the cell with her and she thinks he wants to harm her. He heard many things about her deadly powers, but isn't afraid of her. The main character, Julliette, (the one with powers) is misunderstood and hated because everyone thinks she is a monster. Another character is Adam Kent, the guy locked in the cell with her. Together they break out, go on adventures, …show more content…
She hates herself because of her powers and thinks she's a monster. In the text, it states “I only know I want to feel Warner's neck snap between my own two hands. I want him to experience the same terror he just inflicted upon a child. I want him to die. I want to watch him beg for mercy” (Mafi 163). This shows that Julliette is human, and feels such powerful emotions, that doesn't make her a bad person though because in the end she does truly care for Warner even after thinking of him. According to the story, Juliette also says “someone should just kill me” (Mafi 166). This explains how after the whole situation with Warner, she felt such strong negative emotions and looked down on herself and just wanted to just die. Julliette was talking about her past and states “why don't you just kill yourself? Someone at school asked me once. I think it was the kind of question intended to be cruel” (Mafi 88). This also suggests that Juliette has been bullied and tortured her whole life by basically everyone because they think she is a monster. These all show that truly Juliette is just misunderstood and that she is really sweet and caring, she just hasn't been loved by anyone her whole life. These quotes support the theme because they show how the people around her treating her poorly impacts her so much, but in the end she realizes that it doesn't matter what others say and …show more content…
In the text, Julliette yells at Warner “you are a monster!” (Mafi 83). This shows that she hated him at the beginning and wanted nothing to do with him, and she just thought he was insane. This can also be seen when Juliette again states “You need me to kill people!.... That's disgusting” (Mafi 84). This explains why she thought he was using her, but she realized he wasn't way later on. She also says to him “I will never. you're a sick twisted monster.” and Warner says back “That's not the right answer” (Mafi 255). This also suggests that Warner was in denial about Juliette hating him, he believed that she loved him in the beginning when she hated him and thought he was using her. These all explain how love can make someone crazy. My evidence shows how love can drive someone up the wall, for Warner his feelings for Julliette at the beginning had a negative impact on him and her. Even though the feelings were mutual at the end, their relationship takes a big turn in the other books. Warner doesn't change a lot in this book, but later on has a huge reality
It shows that people’s opinions of her matter to her more than her opinion of herself. Also, it is shown that her mother is the one who gave Jeannette the confidence to tell the story of her past, which later provoked her to write this memoir.
One of the main challenges Jutta had to face was her brother, Werner left her and went to school at the National Institute, a very prestigious and fascist school. Jutta did not like his decision and she struggled with this because they were so close for so long, because they grew up together in the orphanage. This was such a big struggle for Jutta because she thought this was one of the worst decisions he could have made. One of the other struggles for her was her losing her brother because they were so close. As stated in the following quote Jutta was not happy with her brothers choice and wouldn't talk to him. “Jutta opens her eyes but doesn’t look at him. “Don’t tell lies. Lie to yourself, Werner, but don’t lie to me.” (133). This was so hard because he was apart of a fascist school during World War II and she was not a fascist fan. Yet she ended coming full circle and coming back to her roots and her true character. She continued to love Werner and still communicated and talked to him even though she was upset with some of his past
Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is a story written in the first person about a young girl named Melinda Sordino. The title of the book, Speak, is ironically based on the fact that Melinda chooses not to speak. The book is written in the form of a monologue in the mind of Melinda, a teenage introvert. This story depicts the story of a very miserable freshman year of high school. Although there are several people in her high school, Melinda secludes herself from them all. There are several people in her school that used to be her friend in middle school, but not anymore. Not after what she did over the summer. What she did was call the cops on an end of summer party on of her friends was throwing. Although all her classmates think there was no reason to call, only Melinda knows the real reason. Even if they cared to know the real reason, there is no way she could tell them. A personal rape story is not something that flows freely off the tongue. Throughout the story Melinda describes the pain she is going through every day as a result of her rape. The rape of a teenage girl often leads to depression. Melinda is convinced that nobody understands her, nor would they even if they knew what happened that summer. Once a happy girl, Melinda is now depressed and withdrawn from the world. She hardly ever speaks, nor does she do well in school. She bites her lips and her nails until they bleed. Her parents seem to think she is just going through a faze, but little do they know, their daughter has undergone a life changing trauma that will affect her life forever.
Jeannette is a major character and protagonist. She is a round, dynamic character, and the memoir focuses on her development and maturity. Due to her forgiving nature, she is Rex Wall's favorite daughter. Despite her father's destructive nature, she chooses to be optimistic and positive. Through her early childhood she chooses to ignore her father's drunken episodes, and thinks of him as a loving father and an excellent teacher of the wild. By the time she reaches her junior year of high school, she realizes the indisputable flaws that her father has. She uses her intelligence to eventually move away from her parents and Welch. She is a natural forgiver and it shows even when she moves away from her parents.

Winston expresses his feelings towards Julia in such an extraordinary way, “He would flog her to death with a rubber truncheon. He would tie her naked to a stake and shoot her full of arrows.”(Orwell 15). When he is expressing these thoughts, he is actually talking about someone he was actrate to, Winston just had no way of expressing it besides anger. He sees this beautiful young girl, who has made this vow its remain pure and chaste and he just wants to kill her because of how frustrated about it. Although late in the book, who these same two people are alone in a place without worry, everything is different, for example “You are prepared, the two of you to separate and never see one another again. ‘No!’ broke in Julia….’No,’ he said finally.” (Orwell 173) This second moment gives us a definite second opinion about how he may actually feel towards Julia. When they are both in a safe place, and can freely state and do they things they wish to do, Winston does show that he cares for Julia, enough that he does not want to leave her. I believe that these two different feelings show us that even with the body trying to control how people feel, what they do, along with what they think they never get to have complete control of
Due to the extreme differences in the couple’s personalities, the reader is left to question whether Julia ever loved Winston. Julia embodies the qualities that Winston wishes he had. The differences in their morality, their motivation towards the rebellion and their personalities are the few reasons why they are drawn to each other, but it is bittersweet as their differences cause their downfall.

about committing suicide in the first place. It goes from one extreme emotion to another. This scene explores her thoughts & feelings about Romeo & what he really is like that. This scene is one of the most dramatic & exciting scenes in the play Romeo & Juliet. At the beginning of the scene, she felt excitement.
“Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson presents Melinda’s (a teenage girl) life as she drifts through her adolescent years, where she struggles to overcome internal depression, as well as typical issues, involving her social life. Melinda’s life in an obscure world, where enigmatic challenges constantly clog her path towards a normal and healthy life, she feels lost and betrayed. Likewise, the boy that raped her attends the same school as her, causing her to have constant memories of the event. Thus, Melinda’s defective life compromising of rape, lack of communication, and depression mirrors the lives of many teens around the world. In addition, this book revolves around the dominant theme of adolescence, resulting to an effect of a realistic- fiction novel.
In the beginning of the play, Juliet is unable to make her own decisions. However, after her meeting with Romeo, Juliet becomes more assertive and defends her love for Romeo. In conclusion, individuals cannot be forced to love; love is nurtured and nourished but is also always put to
People tend to want change something about themselves to make them feel better of who they are. The author, Judith Ortiz Cofer and her family immigrated from Puerto Rico to the United States in 1954. She struggled with her own identity due to the transition of coming to a whole new different setting. The story “Volar” by Cofer, a young girl tries to escape her reality by having dreams and reading the fantasy world of comic books. In her dreams, she describes the physical changes she is experiencing, for instance her legs would grow longer, her breasts be larger, and her hair would go straight and turn gold. This is what seemed to be her desire look which is like Supergirl. However, Cofer depicts the young girls’ appearance “…find myself back in my body: tight curls still clinging to my head, skinny arms and legs and flat chest unchanged” (234). She points out her “flaws” instead of embracing her own body. She wants to have the physical characteristic of superhero and like be able to fly. Therefore, her identity is affected since being a superhero is not realistic and the story of a superhero being unstoppable does not exist. She considers her body to be unacceptable and there is nothing she can do to change it. A story, affects her identity because she admires superhero characteristics but she is weak. She wants to be someone else rather than her own self. She
The Next Superhero: Juliette Ferrars This thriller novel, Shatter Me is written by Tahereh Mafi. Infact, this is the first book she has written that is a part of trilogy. The writing style of the book was quite different compared to other books like The Fault In Our Stars, Hunger Games, Divergent, and so on because the narrator, Juliette Ferrars, has many thoughts in her head that she did not feel comfortable saying out loud. Due to this reasoning, the book contained many strikethroughs to symbolize her unspoken thoughts that were a combination of negativity.

During the first half of the book, Catherine showed different types of love for two different people. Her love for Heathcliff was her everything, it was her identity to love and live for Heathcliff but as soon as she found out how society views Heathcliff, she sacrificed their love and married Edgar Linton in the hopes of saving Heathcliff from Hindley and protecting him from the eyes of society. In her conversation with Nelly, Cathy who professed her love for Heathcliff quoted “My great miseries in this world have been Heathcliff's miseries, and I watched and felt each from the beginning: my great thought in living is himself.” Catherine proved Nelly Dean that the only person who can make her feel pain and sorrow is Heathcliff. The extent of her love was uncovered when she sang her praise of “I am Heathcliff” because this was the turning point in the book that allowed the readers to truly understand and see the depth of Cathy's love for Heathcliff. On the other hand, Catherine's love for Edgar wasn't natural because it was a love that she taught herself to feel. It might have come unknowingly to Cathy but she did love Edgar as she said “My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I'm well aware, as winter changes the trees.” Cathy knew that it was not impossible to love Edgar for he was a sweet and kind gentleman who showed her the world but unlike ...
