The most interesting character in the narrative poem “ The Highwayman ” is Bess. Bess is selfless. Selflessness is to not think of yourself, but what is in the common good of everyone. Bess is tied up at the foot of her bed. The Highwayman is coming closer and closer to the inn. Bess’s finger pulls the trigger of a redcoat musket and she sacrifices herself to warn the Highwayman. Then, the Highwayman spurs to the west while his face turns grey and pale because Bess has died. Bess is showing that she is selfless when she “ shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him - with her death ” ( Stanza 13, Line 6 ). Bess is selfless. The highway is represented as a monster through the words “petulant beast”, “monster” and “recalcitrant animal”. The lady seems to be poor “suffering along in her broke shows” tells us that she has nothing and is worthless. Emotive language has been used to visually describe how she looks. “with a sack of bones on her back and a song in her brain” this expresses that she in a free, happy minded lady and doesn’t really take note of what she doesn’t have. " to feed the outlaws prowling about the Domain” This tell us that she most likely does this act of kindness very often, not having much at all and simple giving the outlaws something to feed on. “proudly they step up to meet her” Giving this visual effect makes us understand the power this lady has for these feral cats and to also see how much this lady means to this cats. “with love and power” - juxtaposition, again shows us the emotive language between the two this also means that she has a sense of power which she doesn’t have with the outer world. The images, content, and focus of the poem change with the intrusion of the train. Before the protagonist's girl notices the train, the two characters are concerned with the cows, grass, and simply ambling down a country lane. But, as soon as the train approaches, and as it passes, the characters are no longer concerned with nature. Rather, they suddenly begin dreaming of "being president" (11) and of "wonderful, faraway places" (14). This switch from the serenity of nature to the dreams of the world finally ends with the poems last line -- a punishment or at least a warning. Decisions are made every day, and greater the number of choices, the harder it becomes to evaluate the opportunity cost of a particular option, especially when the outcomes are unknown. Everyone experience a dilemma at some point in life, maybe, critical enough to alter their fates; some regret while others rejoice. Such is the case for the narrator, of “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, who is required to choose his fate. There is deep regret because he “could not travel both” only to settle for the “one less traveled by” (19). Blanche Farley, however, tries to cheat out of regret through her lead character of “The Lover Not Taken;” a companion poem of “The Road Not Taken,” only with a parodistic spin. Although the poems share common features of structure, style and a common theme, there is a distinct difference in the imagery and perspectives in the respective poems.

The Taxi, by Amy Lowell, is an Imagist poem that relies heavily on imagery, rather than abstract ideas, to reveal meaning to the reader. The author uses free verse to allow the images and lines to speak for themselves and stand alone as individual lines. By doing so, each line offers its own tone and meaning, which then adds to the overall feel of the poem. Lowell wrote this poem to a love interest, clearly stating the meaning of the poem. She speaks as if the reader is the one being called after. The reader is entranced in her short poem filled with imagery to set the mood; the dire, last goodbye that seemed to separate the two forever. The poet's love for this person was also shown in her other works, and has made it very clear that there was a connection (Highleyman). This connection reveals the theme to be that she is lost without love. Before breaking the poem down into fragments for a line-by-line analysis, it can first be analyzed as a whole.
Throughout the poem two phrases are repeated many times, emphasizing their importance, and giving them more power. As they are repeated the reader is shown the indifference of the narrator when he says, "First they came for the ..." "and I did not speak out Because I was not a..." (Niemöller, 1-6). These phrases and their interchangeable endings show how the narrator does not care who is facing troubles as long as it is not them. This indifference is detrimental because it shows a lack of empathy and cares for others in the narrator. Niemöller's repetition of these two phrases during his poem highlights the narrator's consistent disregard for people different than them. A shift in the pattern of thinking of the narrator is seen when he says, "Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me." (Niemöller, 7). After repeatedly ignoring the injustices against others the narrator realizes their mistake when they find themself in the same situation as the people they had previously ignored. This change in how the narrator thinks shows how their lack of action to help others face their injustices was done so partly in ignorance. Lord Byron’s use of literary techniques helps the reader reach an understanding of the struggle to perform good deeds when there is a possibility of punishment. His work is centered on the mythological tale of Prometheus and his use of literary devices helps emphasize the greater message Byron is trying to depict. Allusions to the myth such as “the rock, the vulture, and the chain” in the first stanza imply that Prometheus suffered a silent agonizing pain. This is also a paradox because he is being subjected to pain only a mortal would endure. (López) Also in the first stanza Byron uses personification in the phrase “sense of woe which speaks but in its loneliness” to better display the feelings Prometheus had during his suffering.
