What factors shape our identity? In my personal view, I think that our identity is based on who we are, what we wear, the way we talk, and the traditions we follow. Our heritage and families can have an important role in shaping who we are. It is important to understand yourself because of how others see you, but most importantly, the way you see yourself. In the story, “The Medicine Bag,” by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, Martin's message about identity is based on the importance of family traditions. The main character of the story, “Who Are You Today Maria,” by Judith Ortiz Cofer, focuses on the challenges of balancing tradition with personal growth and self-discovery. At the beginning of both stories, they have different perspectives of their culture, which are influenced by their environment. In the book, “The Medicine Bag” Martin describes his neighborhood as wealthy because he mentions the yippy poodles, and fancy little dogs. When I hear that I imagine him living in the suburbs, watching his rich neighbors walking their little dogs with their fur very clean and neat. This is one of the reasons why Martin feels as if he needs to fit in with his rich friends by telling them that his grandpa is a wealthy man. He lies about this because he doesn't really know where he comes from. On the other hand, in the book, “Who Are You Today Maria,” Maria’s community does not get along well because they are very diverse. This means everyone stays and talks to their own “group.” This helps Maria express who she is and where she comes from, as well as her grandmother’s
