Pretend for a minute that the superhuman world exists. Many people know the general story of Super Man and of Beowulf. We all know that they both have an enormous amount of strength. They are heroes and people around them relied on them, because they fought the bad guy. It’s also known that they come from completely two different types of worlds, and lived centuries apart. Superman isn’t even human but kryptonian which allows him to have other powers besides strength. In a dark ally being robbed, or a meteor heading toward earth, or the government (which ever kind it is) has gone whack, or any other kind of sticky situation you find yourself in, who are you going to wish was there, Superman or Beowulf. First you have to know what their qualities, strengths, weaknesses, are and what they can provide to help you.
One thing that might make things difficult to choose is that they both have an incredible measure of strength. Superman has always been known has the “man of steel” ever since he was first thought of. Beowulf has the strength of thirty men, “The time has come, O Beow...
Beowulf is the strongest of the Geats and he is willing to defend his people from any monster that comes in his way. He is also determined to prove his strength by defeating Beowulf and his mother by using only his bare hands. He has also killed a large number of many more monsters.
Some heroes show their strength in the form of smarts, emotion, physical strength, and much more. Beowulf displays a remarkable amount of physical strength, and mental strategies.
Although Beowulf might have been a great warrior, usually people do not think that he is the greatest warrior from a story. Beowulf had the strength and the tactics to take down tons and tons of men on his own, but did not have the wisdom of other warrior figures. Beowulf was mainly strength and toughness, and sometimes a warrior needs to have some type of knowledge to ever be able to fight. A great example to Beowulf would be Luke Skywalker. Luke is in a story that is not the same type of story but, has the same concept. The only main difference would have to be the setting and the type of movie. Beowulf is a warrior that is considered super human and doesn't really belong anywhere, because he is not truly con...
There are many similarities between Batman- a modern day hero making use of his intellect, modern technology, and detective skills on crime and warfare and the classic hero, Beowulf- who travels great distances to prove his strength against his enemies, even at impossible odds. For example, the simplest being that they are both heroes working towards the common good, saving others without twice thinking of their own safety. However there are also many differences: obvious ones such as the fact they were born centuries apart, and subtle ones like the importance placed on humility with Batman versus self-confidence with Beowulf.
The two heroes both fight for good causes. They put their lives on the line to protect others. They are also brave and strong in mind and body. However, beyond their similarities Beowulf and Superman are extremely different.
The story of both heroes is quite peculiar when comparing them to each other. Beowulf is recognized for his almighty strength of defeating monsters by himself. In a kingdom located in Denmark, Beowulf travels to aid the king Hrothgar. Hrothgar had a major problem
Superman, Spiderman, and Batman are heroes! They possess the two traits that are needed in western civilization to be considered a hero: wisdom and fortitude. These modern heroes have wisdom and fortitude. Did Beowulf possess these traits? Beowulf shows he is a hero through both his wisdom and fortitude throughout his adventures. Beowulf is a great hero because he possesses both wisdom and fortitude.
Beowulf is not always tested to his limits. His first fight with Grendel was not that difficult for him. He easily defeated the monster. On the other hand, when it comes to overcoming obstacles, Bilbo Baggins is always on the verge of being defeated. Even though he does end up conquering his foes, they are with much more struggle than Beowulf.
A hero not only needs to be physically outstanding, but he also needs to have integrity, moral values and needs to act without thinking in his own benefit. Beowulf has many characteristics of a hero but he also has some defects that make me think that he wouldn’t be considered a hero in today´s world. A hero concept evolves with a culture, Beowulf has many things that the Anglo-Saxons viewed as heroism but he misses many things that are important for a modern hero.
Not only did Beowulf have immense physical strength, but he also had a burning desire for his people’s safety. It is for this selflessness and concern for others that Beowulf is the better hero. Works Cited Beowulf. The Norton Anthology of English Literature, Volume A. Ed. Stephen Greenblatt.
Most of us have heard of modern day heroes such as Spiderman, Superman, and the Hulk. Each is a hero to many children. Heroes are introduced to people early on in life usually as fictional characters, but as children grow older their perceptions of heroes alter. The characteristics of a hero are usually based around the ideas of a society or culture. In the epic Beowulf, the main character is thought of as a hero. Beowulf, a pagan warrior and the main character of the epic, shows certain characteristics such as bravery, loyalty, and generosity, which portray him as a hero. It is interesting how modern day heroes show the much of the same qualities as Beowulf.
A hero is someone who is admired for their courage and bravery, as well as their noble accomplishments. They are respected by almost everyone, due to their kindness and charitable mindset, that drives them to fight for the good of others. Beowulf is the perfect representation of a hero, based on multiple characteristics that he displays throughout the novel. Along with his characteristics, Beowulf also takes on many “hero like” challenges and tasks. In the novel, Beowulf is praised and admired throughout the kingdom for his bravery, humility, and selflessness.
The Hero BeowulfEvery story has a great hero, someone who is above all mighty yet humble. When talking about the epic poem, Beowulf, one of the oldest pieces of English literature, the main character Beowulf fits the classic hero archetype. What makes Beowulf a hero are not only his traits of strength and might, but also loyalty and generosity. Each of these personality traits put together make him who he is and allow him to be a courageous warrior. To start, one of the most prominent characteristics of any hero is unbelievable strength. This trait is seen in heroes in literature and entertainment all throughout history. Of course, Beowulf is the epitome of the ideal hero, and displays his power and strength many times
Though both Beowulf and Batman hold many similar qualities as paragons of heroism, they have differences as well. It is in these differences that you can see the depth of character that Batman has, and Beowulf lacks. Batman is a man of ordinary physical accomplishments, who overcomes his enemies through access to technology they do not have and physical conditioning they do not do. His success is attributed to his own skill and insight into the criminal mind. He is called to do his good deeds by the needs of others. He is also driven by a desire for revenge on the criminals who took his parents from him. Beowulf, according to the poem; “Geats used to say that he has in his handgrip the strength of thirty men, a man famous in battle" (32),
A hero is someone that helps others no matter what the situation. There are many qualities that a hero must posses such as bravery, courage, strength, intelligence and honor. These qualities alone are not enough to make a hero. They must also be pure at heart, fight for the good of mankind and only fight when it is to protect the people and not out of revenge. Beowulf is everything a hero should be, but contains a few qualities that a hero should not posses. When Beowulf sailed with his men to Herot he had one goal, to rid the hall of Grendal. Beowulf was under no obligation to destroy Grendal and never asked for anything in return for his services. A true hero would never ask for money or anything of value. He put his life at risk to save the people of Herot, who he didn’t even know, out of his own good nature Great strength has been a trait that has been identified with heroes in many stories and legends. Than he saw hanging on the wall, a heavy Sword, hammered by giants, strong And blessed with their magic, the best of all weapons But so massive that no ordinary man could lift... (II. 1557-1560) Beowulf possessed great strength that separated him from other men. Being able to use a sword that no ordinary man was able to carry gives the feeling that Beowulf is something more than a human being. It makes him special and causes him to stand out from all other men. Fame is something that makes a hero more noted. Beowulfs popularity had spread all over the world. He never let this go to his head and he never thought that he was better than everyone else because of it. “Your fame is everywhere, my friend,/Reaches to the ends of the earth, and you hold it in your heart wisely...” (II.1704-1706). A hero should not be foolish or full of himself. Unferth said: You’re Beowulf, are you- the same Boastful fool who fought a swimming Match with Brecca, both of you daring and young and proud, exploring the deepest Seas, risking your lives for no reason But the danger? (II. 506-511) A hero should not have to prove to himself or to anyone else that he is brave, fearless or courageous. If he is pure a heart and his intentions are good then he can be considered a true hero.
