Have you ever wondered, “What should I do with my life?”? Should I live to help others? Or should I try to become the most successful person I can be?” I have. However, both of these answers are correct. Well, partially. To explain this, you need to look at two pieces of writing: a poem and a letter. In “Where the Sidewalk Ends” by Shel Silverstein, she talks about following a sidewalk and what it is like at the end of it. In Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, Jeremy goes on a journey to open a box his dead dad left for him. Within the box, Jeremy’s dad writes a letter to him that explains everything and tells him what the meaning of life is. Evidence of this is, “Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black”. And the dark street winds and bends. Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow. We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-white arrows go. To the place where the sidewalk ends” (Silverstein 1-6). This stanza from the poem shows how it uses not only the sidewalk but also uses words like arrows or measured and slow to show other metaphors about life. The chalk-white arrows represent following the path of life, not getting lost or falling off track. While the measured and slow part represent that they will not rush through life, that the person will go through life slowly and enjoy each moment that they can. It shows exactly how the poem uses metaphors to show how one should live their life, slowly, on track, and following the path that they want until their sidewalk ends. Secondly, within the letter by Jeremy’s dad, he uses metaphors to show how one should live their life as well.
