The other day I watched a movie… it's called “ What's eating Gilbert Grape”. The movie was really good, although it was like two hours long and it was a drag. Yet the movie kept me asking myself, what's going to happen next, yet maybe that's just me because I’m always asking myself that during a movie(or book). This movie was about a dysfunctional family… not only family, but house, town, and people too. This movie is your typical dysfunctional small town movie, yet with a few twist and turns. The Grape Family… This is a family with a few setbacks. They aren't your ideal family with a stay at home mom, business working dad, and a few kids...They are a realistic family. The twist is there is no dad, and the kids are old, they take care of their obese mother. The family consist of Gilbert, Arnie, Momma(Bonnie), Ellen, and Amy. Surprisingly some of them are the most important characters, but not all of them. The most important characters are Gilbert, Arnie, Momma, Becky, and Mrs.Carver. For example I didn’t like when Gilbert took a major turn in his life. I can’t say much, unless I give away like the entire movie. Gilbert takes a turn in his life right before Becky teaches him that the most important things in life are family, love, and loyalty. That was like the worst thing that happened in this movie, the best thing is probably Becky. Becky is the best thing that happened in this movie because she had like the best relationship with Gilbert and Arnie. During the Talladega 500, Cal Naughton Jr., Ricky Bobby's former best friend, pulled ahead of Ricky, allowing him to slingshot around his car and pass Jean Girard. Though Cal and Girard were teammates at Dennit Racing, Cal disregarded this and jeopardized his team's success to aid Ricky in the movie Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. This moment was crucial to Ricky, he having fallen from grace, going from NASCAR's top driver to being let go by Dennit Racing. The love Cal exhibited was a selfless form of love that was centered entirely around Ricky's happiness, not his own. Because of this selflessness, Cal compromised his own agenda, winning for Dennit, and disregarded personal consequence in hopes that Ricky would win the race. If you truly love someone as Cal loved Ricky, you must sometimes compromise your own interests for their benefit.

Life is very rough for these children and they must live their everyday lives with little to none of the luxuries most people take for granted. Anyone who has had the chance to read Mary Shelly’s original Frankenstein and watch the movie Young Frankenstein is aware that there is quite a difference when it comes to the two of them. After watching the movie “What’s eating Gilbert Grape” it focuses more on Gilbert Grape than any other characters in the movie. Gilbert Grape is a young man who resides in a small community called Endora. Gilbert at the beginning of the movie states “Describing Endora is like dancing to no music”. Gilbert’s youngest brother Arnie is soon to be 18 years old and has a developmental disability that never was disclosed in the movie. Furthermore, Bonnie Gilbert’s mother has been locked in her own home since her husband committed suicide seven years ago. Moreover, Bonnie is at the stage of stagnation. She is over-weighted and doesn’t think of doing anything for herself or for any of her children. Therefore, leaving Gilbert with the full responsibility of caring for his family especially Arnie.

Ernie's scene evokes the backward-tracking shot used throughout the film to show how Scottie is bonded to his object of desire. Together they bring out the character that an individual is playing in the film. The camera movement in Ernie’s Restaurant brings out forward and backward tracks that defines the point-of-view structure, but here the camera movement does not straight forwardly articulate a point of view. Instead, the camera is self-consciously sets up to show the relationship between the elements of the point-of-view structure that the rest of the film enacts.

The Grapes is a dysfunctional family who is living in the underprivileged rural area. The household consists of mother, Bonnie Grapes, who is a 54 year old jobless widow; Amy Grapes, the 34 year old eldest daughter among children, who is also still unemployed; Gilbert Grapes, the 24 year old eldest son who works at a nearby grocery shop; Arnie Grape, the younger brother of Gilbert Grapes who is autistic; and Ellen Grape, the youngest child, who is 16 years old and works at an ice-cream parlor. The two members of the family are no longer living with it including Larry Grapes who has left the family and is doing the job of a flight attendant, and Albert Grapes, who is the deceased father of the children; he committed suicide 14 years earlier.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape portrays a family that is dealing with the trials, tribulations, and also great times of having a member with a disability. The Grape family consists of Gilbert, Ellen, Amy, Mama, and of course, Arnie. The Grape family lives in an isolated town of Endora in a house that seems to be in shambles since their father died. In the beginning, Gilbert’s voiceover states that “living in Endora is like dancing to no music,” which one can definitely relate to after viewing this touching film. Gilbert Grape is a young man that has been impeded by more burdens than any man ought to have in an entire lifetime. He stocks shelves and delivers groceries for a local store, Lamson’s Grocery, whose business has been deserted by the new supermarket in town. The movie begins with the “yearly ritual” of Gilbert and Arnie watching the caravans that pass along the road. Gilbert’s adversity seems to have started when his father hung himself seventeen years ago in their basement, which in turn drove his mother to obesity and a life confined to only their home. His mother has become a “burden” on him and he feels ashamed and humiliated by her. Gilbert even regards his mother as “a beached whale,” and at one point lifts a young boy to the window to experience the sight of her.
