We all remember the purpose of the Chicano movement of the 1960s and the importance of the movement; however, history tends to forget the importance of Chicanas, the women in the movement. Many of them were responsible for creating organizations and fighting for the rights of Latino people. Chicanas played a key role in the Chicano movement from their roles as leaders in organizations such as Las Mujeres de Aztlan and El Comité Pro-Estudiante to their participation in the walkouts. The roles of women in the movement were stereotypical domestic roles and duties, such as secretaries, cooks, and familial obligations. Unfortunately, there was a lot of ‘machismo’ in the Chicano movement, as in male dominance and control. This was one of the main points of criticism in the Chicano movement, that many women weren’t included yet were the ones doing the most work while all the men got the credit. “women for the most part were the “behind the scenes” organizers responsible for effective mass mobilization, communications, and the day-to-day tasks of movement building.”. Who doesn't know the struggles of what it means to be Chicana, women who only had stereotypes to go off of, which made Chicana women feel more isolated? Therefore they began to start a movement within a movement, for Chicana representation and acknowledgment. Cinco de Mayo is usually confused with Mexican Independence day but that day is when Mexico fought French invaders. During 1910, Mexico revolted against its repressive rulers and adapted its new constitution. They came up with the term for those who were told in Mexico they weren’t Mexican and in America who weren’t American. They wanted to belong to both. While the Civil Rights movement is mostly known to give African-American rights but, Chicanos also fought for their rights. The term Chicano first became accepted during the Chicano Movement. Thus, Chicanos have many things to be proud of. Their Aztec ancestors were intelligent people who built a city on water and made all Chicanos royalty. Along with their Mexican ancestors won two revolutions and won against the huge French army. Trinidad Sanchez Jr., a poet, wrote about Chicano pride in his poem, “Why Am I so Brown?” Sanchez wrote the poem in order to call attention to that all should be proud of their skin color. Notably, on page 277 Vigil states that “When Chicanas began to raise the issue of gender inequities, some movement activists responded by arguing that feminist concerns diverted attention from the ‘real’ issues of racism and class exploitation.” Furthermore, I believe that racism and class exploitation are equally as important in acknowledgment as is feminism exploitation because women in the media are constantly being exploited for their sexuality. When Mexicans and Puerto Ricans moved to Chicago in the late 1900s, they encountered many issues without any help. Cases of domestic violence and lack of education and jobs emerged in the Latino community. Latino immigrants populated the Pilsen neighborhood and didn't have many services or resources available for them when they needed assistance. After no signs of improvement were apparent, 15 women stood up and decided to make a change of their own. Mujeres Latinas En Accion formed to help Latina women and their families by providing services, fighting for the better of Latinas and giving help to those who need it.
Their primary mission was to establish equality amongst men and to gain more rights. Contrary to popular belief, many famous rebellion leaders such as Pancho Villa were not supportive of women’s integration into the bandit forces (Fernandez 55). Within his book The Underdogs, Mariano Azuela distorts the image of women with the hopes of dissuading them from straying away from their traditional pre-Revolution roles within Mexican culture. During the Mexican Revolution, women typically chose to either fight in the conflicts to advance their rights or to take a submissive role and accept status quo.
Living in Los Angeles there are social issues such as race, gender, and geography that are still intact from the past. The main one of the social issues that we are still suffering from and living with is the representations of gender in Los Angeles. Gender representations in The Revolt of the Cockroach People by Oscar Zeta Acosta which he discusses about women figure highly but hardly acknowledge them in the midst of a “semi-autobiographical account” of the Chicano Power movement. According to Acosta, women are just the concubines, mourners, and supporters to their men. Armando Rendon in his landmark 1970 wrote the book I am a Chicano. This book is about how activist in the Chicano movement pointed to an empty monolog of the word Chicano. Chicano means an activist. Chicanos describes themselves it was a form of self-affirmation; it reflected the consciousness that their experiences. Chicanos means, nations, histories, and cultures. This book talks about how Mexican American also used the term of Chicano to describe them, and usually in a lighthearted way, or as a term of endearment. In American history, civil rights movements have played a major role for many ethnics in the United States and have shape American society to what it is today. The impact of civil rights movements is tremendous and to an extent, they accomplish the objectives that the groups of people set out to achieve. The Mexican-American Civil Rights Movement, more commonly known as the Chicano Movement or El Movimiento, was one of the many movements in the United States that set out to obtain equality for Mexican-Americans (Herrera). At first, the movement had a weak start but eventually the movement gained momentum around the 1960’s (Herrera). Mexican-Americans, also known as Chicanos, began to organize in order to eliminate the social barriers that prevented them from progressing in American society (Bloom 47). Throughout the years of the Chicano Movement, Mexican-Americans had a “desire to integrate into the mainstream culture while preserving their own identity” (Bloom 47). The Chicano Civil Rights Movement was a progressive era when Mexican-Americans had goals that they wanted to accomplish and sought reform in order to be accepted as a part of the United States.
A significant part in being Chicano is embracing your roots and fighting for your rights. Chicano culture was at its peak in the 60’s and 70’s when Chicanos were exhausted of being oppressed. Chicanos young and old, decided that it was time to take a stand by not only expressing their feelings but their pride. This inspired the rise in Chicano art coming out at that time as well as a bunch of sayings going around like “Brown pride” and “We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us”. Most of my mom’s side identify as Chicano, especially the ones that were growing up at that time. They appreciate the movement, the art, and the lifestyle. In fact, I know that at least one of my tias participated in the school walkouts for Chicano rights. When I’m at a family party, I still notice that Chicano pride even in my older cousins who were born years after the peak. I understand that to some, Chicanos are perceived as cholos. There are some but not all, but all the older ones do show off their pride as I’ve seen.
In the United States, women fought not only against the patriarchy, but against racism and xenophobia. While in Mexico, women were prepared to take up arms and defend their country, despite the fact that they were unable to vote.
The entire Women’s Movement in the United States has been quite extensive. It can be traced back to 1848, when the first women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York. After two days of discussions, 100 men and women signed the Declaration of Sentiments. Drafted by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, this document called for equal treatment of women and men under the law and voting rights for women. This gathering set the agenda for the rest of the Women’s Movement long ago (Imbornoni). Over the next 100 years, many women played a part in supporting equal treatment for women, most notably leading to the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which allowed women the right to vote.
Again we would see the celebration of Dia De Los Muertos. In the 1970s, Self Help helped encourage the art that participated. It helped bring to community together and create large ensemble of art, parades, and festivals revolving around in the Chicano community.
When drastic changes are needed to be done for equal opportunities and a better chance for the future a revolt is bound to happen. So with the Mexican revolution going on and men off to fight, the women faced many personal and governmental issues at home. Eventually being mobilized through political destruction, women were able to change the roles they were perceived, restrictions amongst them lessened, and Hermila Galindo became a huge factor with it all as she had political connections. In the end, the women of Mexico were bounded successfully in which they change how they were look upon among men and the rest of Latin America.
My object of study is Hispanic women experience inequality in education due to the social constructs of subordination of women and Hispanic culture. Historically women have been conditioned with a patriarchal system, which a woman’s domain should be at home, to be a homemaker. The ideology of inferiority can and will justify the deprivation of natural born rights. During the progressive area and women’s rights movement women wanted to be seen as people, they wanted to have rights to own property, negotiate wages, legal documents, access to birth control, and the right to vote, those women who had the voice to deal with these issues were white upper and middle class women. During this time Hispanic women, amongst other minorities, were fighting battles against racism, segregation, exploitation in the work force, access to a good education, and oppression through Hispanic culture. It is not just a struggle to be Hispanic overcoming the inequalities within the education system but to be a Hispanic women within the education system has greater disadvantages. This case study will investigate what forces contribute to the inequality within the education system for Hispanic women in the United States.
There is a particular echo that stands out in this passage. It can be found later on in the passage when Creon says, “ You can’t of looked at yourself in the glass, you little sparrow!”. This echo is one of the larger themes in the play. It is often in this play that Antigone gets referred to as a bird or as childlike. This line by Creon is similar to one earlier in the play from the Nurse.
