When studying art from the Romantic period, many of the works from that period carry a lot emotion that is desired to be evoked when looking at the different pieces. When I look at the oil painting by Théodore Géricault called The Raft of Medusa I feel the immediate sense of agony and pain very evident by the faces of many of the people on the raft. With further background I understand more about painting; that the Medusa was a ship that wrecked and the raft was the only means for certain crewman to survive the thirteen or so days while they floated to shore. They are durable and inexpensive comparing to canvas.The artwork shows the happy emotions and realism with his interpretation of his wife and himself. Color theme of the painting was blue and background/negative space is dark blue. His right side of face is dark blue to show the shadow of his face and distance perspective. He used the black line which is stained glass like to separate the negative space/positive space. He used dark blue green for negative space on the Masonite board. Texture of oil painting is rough and we can trace of the paint brush stroke. They give the vivid or liveliness that he was well known of. The figures are realistic and impressionism style rather than photogenic. The title of paining and sub title of paining itself tell the story of artwork. Esther looks very relaxed, content and happy. Rattner looks happy , passionate, proud of himself as well. He certainly looks overcame the grief of death of his first wife. The painting that captivated my eyes was “La Buena Ventura”. As I was walking through the hallway my eyes were drawn to this beautiful young woman wearing a bluish greenish dress and what seems to be pink hearts. She is sitting down with a sad look on her face staring at her cards. I tried distinguishing the type of cards and to me they look a little like tarot cards. So I interpreted this as her not happy with what her fortune has in store for her. Maybe she is waiting for her love or she might have found out that tragedy is going to strike her way. I noticed the guitar at the far left corner so she could be a musician who is having a hard time making money. This oil painting is done so beautifully, the artist used a lot of texture and a mixture of dark colors to bring out the shadows and accentuate
The composition of this painting forces the eye to the woman, and specifically to her face. Although the white wedding dress is large and takes up most of the woman’s figure, the white contrasts with her face and dark hair, forcing the viewer to look more closely into the woman’s face. She smokes a cigarette and rests her chin on her hands. She does not appear to be a very young woman and her eyes are cast down and seem sad. In general, her face appears to show a sense of disillusionment with life and specifically with her own life. Although this is apparently her wedding day, she does not seem to be happy.
While home is usually represented by a physical shelter such as a house, Homer and Euripides in their respective novels The Odyssey and Medea show that home has much more significance as a state where one can comfortably express the values and beliefs that define one’s identity. Both authors use protagonists who are far away from home. These characters often associate with and depend upon other characters they meet. Since they live under the influence of others, it is not surprising then to find that the two protagonists lose their individual identities. Moreover, both protagonists will also purposefully develop a second identity that is designed to conform to the society in which they inhabit. Since both protagonists are away from home for the majority of both works, it would be appropriate to examine, through specific instances, how both authors connect a lack of home with an absence of individual identity.
The story of Medusa and Perseus is known as one of the top thriller tales in Greek Mythology. To begin, Medusa is one of three sisters, Sthenno and Euryale. However, she is the only mortal one. Originally, Medusa had golden, long, beautiful hair. She was Athena’s Priestess and swore to a celibate life. Later on, Medusa met Poseidon, fell in love with him and completely forgot about her vows to Athena. The Goddess Athena was so infuriated that she turned Medusa into a hideous looking monster. Her golden locks became venomous snakes and her face became so grotesque that any God or immortal to look into her eyes would become a statue of stone. The exchange that takes place between Medea and the Chorus serves several purposes in Euripides' tragedy, The Medea. It allows us to sympathize with Medea in spite of her tragic flaws. It also foreshadows the tragic events that will come to pass. Finally, it contrasts rationality against vengeance and excess. The Chorus offers the sane view of the world to the somewhat insane characters of Medea, Jason, and Creon. As the passage begins on page 176, the leader of the Chorus reveals that she has high regards for Medea despite the fact that she is "savage still." She acknowledges Medea as a foreigner and an outsider and yet is sympathetic towards her. This alliance is apparently based on female bonds rather than on any kind of national loyalty. Medea wastes no time before she begins lamenting and cursing those who "dared wrong me without cause." The Chorus tries to comfort Medea, hoping that this might "lessen her fierce rage / And her frenzy of spirit." They show real concern for her well-being, as well as for the well-being of her loved ones. This unselfish attitude is in stark contrast to the attitudes of the main characters in the tragedy, who all seem to be extremely self-serving. So in just a few short lines, it's already become apparent that while the chorus doesn't necessarily agree with the way that Medea is handling her situation, they are sticking by her and supporting her. This idea supports one of the important themes of the play: the battle of the sexes. Medea now has a chance to get a few things off her chest. She addresses the "Women of Corinth," reminding them that of "all things that live upon the earth and have intelligence we women are certainly the most wretched." She discusses the sad lot that women must deal with in marriage and again stresses the fact that she is an outsider, "alone, without / a city. Her speech is clever and compelling.
The story’s theme is related to the reader by the use of color imagery, cynicism, human brotherhood, and the terrible beauty and savagery of nature. The symbols used to impart this theme to the reader and range from the obvious to the subtle. The obvious symbols include the time from the sinking to arrival on shore as a voyage of self-discovery, the four survivors in the dinghy as a microcosm of society, the shark as nature’s random destroyer of life, the sky personified as mysterious and unfathomable and the sea as mundane and easily comprehended by humans. The more subtle symbols include the cigars as representative of the crew and survivors, the oiler as the required sacrifice to nature’s indifference, and the dying legionnaire as an example of how to face death for the correspondent.

As Jàs Elsner assesses in Roman Eyes, “the privacy and desolation of the moment is staged as a group with the pointing figure making visually explicit Ariadne’s gaze at the ship while the lamenting Eros externalizes her state of mind and tears,” as seen in the first century CE fresco from Pompeii (IX.5.11). The fact that in many of the extant examples the weeping Eros covers his eyes only heightens the scheme’s emphasis on gazes and visual emotion. Clearly, here is a play of desire defeated and desire fulfilled. In each case the lovers are separated by water with the female gazing out at the male in action who sails away from her. As Elsner explains, “gaze (different characters’ gazing, the different potential objects upon which the gaze may be focalized, the self-consciousness of representing the gaze itself being gazed at) is a central weapon in the visual mythographers’ pictorial argument. In the case of Campanian wall paintings of Ariadne, this weapon was used to show women’s dependence on men and their vulnerability and maudlinism.

The Raft of the Medusa depicts the aftermath of the shipwreck of the French naval frigate Médusa, which crashed off the African coast. The desperate passengers then built a makeshift raft from the pieces of the destroyed ship, which is the moment depicted in Géricault’s painting. Particularly, The Raft of the Medusa was a contemporary piece that commented on the practice of slavery and the incompetence of the new French government in the early 19th century. Munch popularity is due to his extraordinary ability to convey a deep and raw emotion from the unconscious onto the canvas leaving it to the viewers to interpret, feel and reflect. He stood out from other artists of his time, as he varied away from the norms and focused on the feelings and state of the work, rather than details and perfection. Anxiety evolved as the main point of Munch art. This essay goes through Edvard Munch’s childhood focusing on the events that caused him anxiety, how the anxiety affected his relationship with women and love, and how his idea of anxiety was supported by the theories of Søren Kierkegaard.
