On May 6, 1856 in Frieberg, Moravia, a brilliant man by the name of Sigmund Freud was born. He was four years old when his family decided to move to Vienna where he lived for the remainder of his life and did all of his life’s work in contributing to the field of Psychology. Freud lived in a troubling social time when the Nazis had conflicts with people of Jewish heritage. In 1938 the Nazis invaded Austria, and Freud, who was Jewish, fled to England to escape persecution. In this therapeutic approach, he outlines that the therapist and the patient must collectively work together to bring the contents of the patients unconscious into the patient’s conscious awareness. When the patient’s unconscious conflicts are evoked, the therapist helps the patient deal with them positively. Freud was extremely influential in shaping the public view of psychology. Many of his ideas and contributions are cannot be tested using scientific methods, but psychologists widely accept the idea of unconscious mental processes. What people personally go though is extremely important in the study of psychology. This level is similar to long –term memory .The unconscious level contains material that the mind cannot easily reclaim and remember. These hidden memories, wishes, desires, and motives are often in conflict. The conflicts between them produce anxiety or other psychological discomfort. To protect us from this distress, these forces and their conflicts are kept hidden from awareness. However, this information leaks into consciousness in “Freudian slips.” Freud said these slips were not accidents. Instead, they offered a glimpse into unconscious conflicts that determine behavior. The various components of our conscious and subconscious the id, ego, and superego lives in all of us and affects what we do and think, according to Sigmund Freud. Freud was a pioneer in the field of psychology for his various theories. Arguably Freud’s most important contribution to the field of psychology is his psychodynamic theory. The studies of the differences in the conscious and subconscious within what we think and what we do. Freud’s theories may be outdated having been developed in the early twentieth century, but concerning his psychodynamic theory it has been the foundation for many more psychologist to develop their own theories and ideas. Thus, making the study of Freud’s psychodynamic theory imperative for us as a society to study for future generations.

Freud was always interested in human’s unconscious state of mind, the things that took place in our unconscious, in addition to thoughts and feelings that are in our unconscious. He believed the human mind was like an iceberg; it was mostly hidden in the unconscious with the conscious mind being the tip of the iceberg. He believed the unconscious held aspects of our personality and the conscious things we were already aware of. Another aspect of psychoanalysis that is apparent is defense mechanisms, which according to Freud are used by the ego to protect the person from anxiety. Psychoanalysis therapy is based off of observations that individuals are unaware of; they are also the factors that determine emotions and behavior.

He began his university studies at the University of Vienna in 1873. He was enrolled in medical school, but focused his attention on biology (Thornton par. 3). Between the years 1885 and 1886, Freud spent his time in Paris. He was amazed by the work of Jean Charcot and his hypnotism. However, once back in Vienna, he discovered that the effects of hypnotism did not last long. He worked with Josef Breuer and together they discovered that neuroses were caused by traumatic experiences. They tried to find way to bring out these experiences in their patients, hoping to cure them. They published their finding under the title, Studies in Hysteria (1895). He proposed, among other things, that the human mind is composed of three parts: the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious. The preconscious consists of information, such as a telephone number, that is “accessible to consciousness without emotional resistance” (Schellenberg 21). The tip of the iceberg represents the part of the mind that is conscious, everyday thoughts. His father was an industrious wool merchant with a happy and witty personality. His mother was a cheerful and vivacious woman. He was one of nine siblings. He was the first-born child of Amali and Jacob; however, two male siblings where from his father’s first marriage. When he was a young boy, his family moved to Vienna where he lived most of his life. At the age of twenty-six, he fell madly in love with Martha Bernays when she was visiting one of his sisters. Shortly thereafter, they married and had six children of their own three boys and three girls. His children describe him as a loving and compassionate man.
In terms of the unconscious and conscious, Freud situates these conceptions in a topographic model of the mind. He divided it into two systems called the unconscious and the preconscious. Their knowledge in the unconscious system is repressed and unavailable to consciousness without overcoming resistances (e.g., defense mechanisms). Thereby, the repression does not allow unconscious knowledge to be completely aware; rather, it is construed by means of concealing and compromise, but only interpretable through its derivatives dream and parapraxes that overcome resistance by means of disguise and compromise. Within the preconscious system, the contents could be accessible, although only a small portion at any given moment. Unconscious thought is characterized by primary process thinking that lacks negation or logical connections and favors the over-inclusions and 'just-as' relationships evident in condensed dream images and displacements. Freud asserted that primary process of thinking was phylogenetically, and continues to be ontogenetically, prior to secondary process or logical thought, acquired later in childhood and familiar to us in our waking life (1900, 1915a).
