Professionalism in any workplace is, without doubt, an indispensable, essential, and fundamental quality that every professional must portray. As an undergraduate student with aspirations of joining a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree, I have always strived to appreciate and understand the meaning of upholding and by extension adhering to the ethical codes established by relevant bodies that govern the practice of physical therapists. The American Physical Therapists Association (APTA) is charged with the responsibility of regulating the practice of physical therapist and as such defines the qualifications needed for licensure, and sets standards of proficiency required to practice as a physical therapist. Professionalism in the context of being a student means that I should be ready to recognize situations that are unethical during clinical rotations and participation in various tasks and reporting them. This is because the profession demands that a qualified physical therapist should work towards making his or her patients as safe, comfortable and contented as possible. The fact that I am always cognizant that there are ethical boundaries that we as students and future therapists must maintain, shows my readiness and eagerness to deal with such situations in the future. In the context of being a student of physical therapy, altruism is an important value that has enabled me to influence others through engaging them, showing concern and affection. Physical therapists are usually trusted by their clients with the hope that they will help them recover and resume their normal lives. Physical therapists are then faced with situations that require them to offer their services notwithstanding the rewards that their efforts will attract. Being able to empathize with patients is vital as it determines the quality of service and attention a physical therapist will give his or her patients. The APTA code of ethics clearly defines the goals and ethical principles of the organization. It provides an ethical guidance for all physical therapists, and prevents them from taking advantage of their patient/client. It encourages the physical therapist to seek additional advice or consultation in instances where the guidance of the Code of Ethics may not be definitive. The Guide outlines behaviors accepted for physical therapists critical in all settings of practice.
