As I move toward a professional career in physical therapy, I recognize the importance of working with people to help improve upon their daily life experience. The American Physical Therapy Association’s vision is “transforming society by optimizing movement to improve human experience.” As a future physical therapist, it will be my goal to engage clients with an emphasis on movement in order to heal, rebuild, and rehabilitate. In physical therapy, it is essential to understand that movement is critical to healing and rehabilitating. Although educating the client is necessary for instruction, one of my goals as a physical therapist is to motivate the client toward movement. A positive relationship between physical therapist and client inspires the client to improve physically and mentally. This genuine connection can be the difference between a person who returns to health or one who becomes discouraged and gives up. Another aspect of my vision includes working with clients to help them gain a healthier lifestyle. The vision defined by APTA has seven main principles which include: identity, quality, collaboration, innovation, value, consumer-centricity, access, and advocacy. As a future physical therapist, it will be my job to identify areas of weakness or loss and then work with the client to …show more content…
Consultation with other specialists or general practitioners is important as it gives me insight into the client’s areas of need as well as provides me with an avenue to discuss other possible solutions. When clients leave a physical therapy session, I want them to feel better about themselves having hope for their future and looking forward to a healthier lifestyle. I will work to the best of my ability to provide excellent quality of care, as well as to have a great improvement for my patient’s
Occupational therapy was based off of psychology; we evolved from treating mentally ill patients with isolation as an efficient treatment plan. We must never forget we are known to be “the art and science of helping people do the day-to-day activities that are important and meaningful to their health and well being through engagement in valued occupations” (Crepeau, Cohn, & Schell, 2008). To other professional disciplines this article explains the difference between each of us, yet can also express our relation to one another. The basic goal of all therapeutic disciplines is to better our clients life, through physical, speech or occupational therapy. Every discipline targets different goals, may it be body mechanics, reducing a stutter or buttoning a shirt, at the end of the day our clients well being may it be through science, art or both is all that matters. To the occupational therapy field this article means progress for what we do. Reading this article today in the year 2015 did not seem like old information to me, it is still relevant, I am proud that our field is not only evolving with contemporary time but it is also maintaining its
With the help of my family and employers, I resign from my job and enrolled into the University of Houston-Clear Lake. They motivated me into taking the first step into my professional career in where I achieved my bachelor’s degree in Fitness & Human Performance. It was there that I was given the opportunity to do my internship at Proactive Physical Therapy (PPT) and see hands on what to expect in a PT setting. To be a part of someone’s rehabilitation journey, from the moment you first see them at their initial evaluation, to when they are graduating and being discharged, is an incredible feeling to be a part of. A Physical Therapist often encounter patients that are at the lowest point in their life in which they would have to teach, coach, listen and motivate the patient to rehabilitate them. When TW came in for PT, he was down on himself because he had
With the help of physical therapists, people are able to get their body back. They construct elasticity, muscle, and life back into their patients. Their goals are to terminate people’s pain, help with range of motion, and give them their sense of confidence back. The meaning of physical therapy is a profession in the medical field that deals with helping individuals preserve, repair, and improve movement. However, physical therapy is not only limited to one type of personnel. There are many different specialties of physical therapy one can study. For example, physical therapy can range from: orthopedic, geriatrics, neurological, cardiopulmonary, pediatrics, athletics, and general physical therapy. The question that comes to mind when thinking about physical therapy is, “How does one chose the path of physical therapy?” Physical therapy is emotionally and physically demanding and the progress of a patient, depending on their situation, typically moves slowly. Nonetheless, people who find it rewarding are very happy with their choice of career. The thought of making an improvement in peoples’ lives is an important quality to have for those who would like to enter into the field.
Becoming a physical therapist requires not just physical ability, but adaptability. Physical therapists work with every individual regardless of race, gender and age (Physical Therapist 140). One thing a physical therapist should be aware of is that not all patients are the same. The physical therapist must adjust differently with every patient depending on how they are most comfortable. When becoming a physical therapist, one must be patient with his or her patient and must be willing to help them with their situation (Physical Therapist 141). People who get frustrated easily or do not like helping people
Like every profession in the medical field even Physical Therapist need to be relaxed and determined. When a patient comes to a Physical Therapist for intervention they more than likely do not want to be there and think it is a waste of time. With this being said, the patient
Have you ever bent down to pick something up or sprinted after your dog because he got loose? Not many people in today’s society pay attention to their body movement. They often take their body’s ability to move normally for granted. A person’s biomechanics are essential to everyday life, without being able to move properly one cannot perform everyday tasks. Unfortunately, there are people who are not able to do so and face many hardships in their life and may be in a lot of pain. Therefore, these people seek professional assistance to help them regain their ability to function normally. Usually, they end up in the care of a physical therapist and his assistant. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, physical therapist assistants “help patients who are recovering from injuries, illnesses, and surgeries regain movement and manage pain.” There is a lot to being a physical therapist, the duties the job requires, the schooling needed to become one, and how much the job pays.
The main part of a physical therapist’s (PT) job is to help their patients return to full activity. Most of the time they work with patients who are recovering from surgery, which can be both athletes and nonathletes. They help the patients relearn how to walk and run if they had surgery on their leg, or to write if they have surgery on their hand or arm. PTs work closely with surgeons for rehabilitation both before and after to strengthen muscles and regain full movement. They examine and determine each patient’s needs and set goals for the patient. The PT monitors the patient’s progress throughout their recovery and changes the patient’s plan if necessary.
People who have been in accidents or having disabling conditions turn to physical therapists, commonly called PT’s, for help. Physical therapists are professional health care providers who are licensed in each and every state they practice. Physical therapy has a long history of returning people to their maximum level of physical function. Physical therapists use a variety of techniques to restore a function, improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent physical disabilities in their patients. However, being a physical therapist also has many downfalls such as dealing with patient’s insurance, motivating patients, and dealing with criticism in the workplace.
Physical therapy is always full of surprises, from new advancements in technology to new and improved therapeutic techniques. Although there are fun games and new technology that physical therapists can do with patients, the main struggle for physical therapists is to motivate their patients to complete their therapy exercises both in the clinic and in the outside world. This problem is very frustrating because the doctors who work at the clinic constantly push patients to complete their therapy so that they can heal; however, when patients are stubborn and reluctant to their treatment, yet constantly complain of pain, doctors must spend more time convincing them to do the therapy rather than completing the therapy itself.
A physical therapist does a lot of things to help patients get back to what they normally do day to day before an injury. They do this by coming up with plans that helps to reduce pains and help restore movements and make goals for patients. They help by having a hands-on approach and being able to help with exercises and stretches they also massage muscles to help manipulate them to move. They also use different technology to help with anything that deals with the movement or that would restrict movement such as ultrasounds and electrotherapy.
In order for physical therapists to appropriately optimize movement, they need the intelligence to adequately promote and define the movement system. Exceptional understanding of the movement system is pertinent in identifying impairments, recognizing activity restrictions, providing therapeutic interventions, and appreciating the potential for the human

In order to identify the problem, a therapist must assess the patient's range of motion through a few tests. For example if a patient has lower back pain, a therapist will perform lower extremity exercises. Exercises such as squats, side lunges, and hamstring exercises will help involve your lower back.
