In one, a specimen-creating brute robs a pelican child’s life and her guardian trying to bring her back to life. In the other, a prince learns the value of his frog-turned-princess and sets out on a quest to find her. Joy Williams’s Baba Iaga and the Pelican Child and Alexander Afanasev’s The Frog Princess are both critical facets of the fairy tale genre. While initially it may seem that Williams preserved no elements from Afanasev’s tale, upon a closer glance, it is evident that the two tales’ similarities outnumber their differences. By incorporating a generous portion of the original story into his, Williams’s version brings forth an innovative arrangement of classic and new. As a result, William’s tale introduces features to the tale that mirror everyday life lessons while simultaneously maintaining qualities that are reflective of the definitional aspects of the fairy tale genre.
The poem “Hazel Tells Laverne” written by Katharyn Howd Machan portrays the originally fairy tale story of the princess and the frog in a drastically different light. The fairy tale itself is very intriguing because there have been many different versions written over the years and the stories have slight differences between them (Heiner). The version that will be used for this analysis of Machan’s poem version will be “The Frog Prince” by Brothers Grimm. Machan’s version of the story is unique in many ways and, the time period she lived in and her gender played a great influence into how she displayed the classic fairy tale to the audience. She brought up new issues into the context of the original story. Machan uses many literary elements
An expectation of how fairy tale stories should be and how typical characters should act is deeply engrained within all of us from childhood. It all begins with classic stories like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Snow White. Sometimes though there are stories that completely turn around our view of how things should be. The Princess Bride by William Goldman is one of these stories. In it, our normal view of a princesses, heroes, and villains is greatly changed.
Even though fairy tales don’t always end the way we want them to, we usually expect them to end with prince charming saving a princess. However, according to the Grimms Brothers version, “The Frog King,” the princess actually saves the prince. An innocent naive princess comes across a frog that once was a prince. Therefore, the only way he can overcome this curse is to ask a princess to fully have her assurance into becoming his companion. The moral of this fairy tale is express how appearances are deceiving. We don’t fully have an understanding what true beauty looks like until it is standing in front of us. The three main symbols that emphasize the true beauty in this fairytale is the frog, the fountain, and the golden ball.
Advertisements use celebrities and Disney characters to give young girls the idea of being able to imitate their lifestyle. By buying the merchandise of these princesses young girls are buying this mentality and promoting the message. Playboy bunny and Disney princesses are different yet similar in the way that they exploit female bodies. For instance, in the film Mulan her mother and aunts state, “good breeding and a tiny waist will bring honor to them all,” as in her family name (“Disney and Sexism – You-Tube”). This implies that having a tiny waist is more attractive than a usual figure. This leads young girls to believe that the only way their body would be appreciated is if they have the same frame as Mulan. Mulan’s figure seemed average and the females in her family who were helping her get dressed in order to be presentable they used a fabric ribbon lace material to tighten her waist. This extremely emphasized in the movie giving the message that the only way your family will accept you is if you are thin. This Disney princess is over-sexualized because she uses her appearance to attain luxuries. Her family wants her to go on a date against her will in order to marry a man who she does not love. She struggles with her inner self. The producers show that even when a woman is strong she must please others.
As a college student, is the idea of your final grade being based off of just a midterm and final very stressful? O 'Malley argues in his essay "More Testing, More Learning" that professors should give out more quizzes and assignments to reduce the stress and procrastination students face before midterms and finals. Although this might be helpful for a high school setting, it would not be completely efficient at a college level. This is because frequent testing takes up a significant amount of students and professors time, are added stress throughout the year, will not fix a students procrastination, and having high stake tests prepares students for their future. Some of O 'Malley 's ideas seem reasonable and would help students while others are an inconvenience for the professor and students.
The Paper Bag Princess is a counter point to traditional fairy tales about Princes and Princesses as it displays characters in altered roles. Princess Elizabeth challenges the modern view of the masculinity of a hero by reversing gender roles when she chooses to save Prince Ronald herself. By taking on the fire breathing dragon and outsmarting him, Princess Elizabeth defies typical princess roles and fairytale plots. Although lacking Cinderella elegance, Elizabeth's determination, self-confidence and awareness of her inner be...

daughter-mother relationships, with the mature adversary acting as a wicked maternal substitute, simultaneously erasing the mother and replacing her with a negative image' (Do Rozario, 2004, p.41). This could suggest that once the evil femme fatale has been stripped of her powers, her importance is reduced and a prince has substituted her in the princesses’ life. This results in the princess still being passive but now under the control of a prince rather than the powerful evil stepmother.
What do you want to be when you grow up? When I was five years old my dream was to grow up and become one of the Disney princesses. As Princess Aurora said, “They say if you dream a thing more than once, it is sure to come true”. Unfortunately, I grew up and did not become a Disney princess, however, they still played a big role in my childhood as they do with most young girls. There are many controversies about the effects Disney princesses have on young girls, so should they be exposed to one of Disney’s most iconic images when they are so vulnerable?
It was not until 2000 that Disney decided to group Mulan, Belle, and the gang together under the brand Disney Princess. Princess merchandise, dolls, clothing, games, home décor, toy has become a $5.5 billion enterprise and Disney’s second-most-profitable franchise, after Mickey Mouse (Suddath).
A few months ago a girl named Cindy's parents took a vacation to America, leaving her alone with her aunt and two daughters, Tiphisha and Moya. Her parents lived in England and were extremely wealthy, and for that reason her aunt, Lorna and her daughters were jealous of Cindy and despised her very much.
One day, the king and queen went on a trip to another kingdom when Caroline was eighteen. On their way to the kingdom their carriage was stopped. The king and queen heard screams and were frightened. Stefan stepped out and said “Stay here, I will come back. Use your magic if necessary.” Stefan looked around and saw blood splattered on the floor. As he turned around to go back to the queen, a figure appeared with veins around his face and sharp teeth, and bit the king on his neck until he sucked him dry of blood. Rebekah heard Stefan scream and ran out of the carriage. She saw her husband being killed and began chanting in Latin until the figure fell to the floor in pain. She ran to Stefan but it was too late, he was dead. The queen sobbed next to her husband, when she was suddenly grabbed by the neck and also sucked on until dry.
In this story, we are presented with a talking fish who grants wishes. Fairy tales teach their audience that bad things can happen to anyone by anyone in a safe environment. That safe environment is constructed through magic. It is comforting to know that in the end the story goes back to the beginning and that things always lead to safety, instead of ending with punishment, or worse. Magic is also a source of comic relief in tales, where heavier topics like murder or in the case of “The Fisherman and His Wife” a war of the sexes and greed are explored. Mainly, fairy tales like this one teach us how to distinguish between right and wrong because the good is always rewarded and the bad is punished. By returning the couple to their pisspot, the fairy tale teaches its audience about humility as well as the importance of being
There was a time when a king and queen ruled over the land I grew up in. Fairies were of popular talk back then, and my title of a Red Fairy would have struck awe into many people. The king and queen were kind rulers, and everyone wanted what was best for them. They had been trying for some time to have a child. You could see their losing eyes with the way they smiled. They were starting to give up. But then, the queen’s kindness was finally returned to her. She was walking along a...
