Introduction
Nutrition education is an essential component of nutrition intervention to improve dietary habits, food choices and to prevent nutritional deficiencies . Nutrition education schemes are develop for the development of nutrition information regarding the sound dietary intake with during a community or a specific target population.
Nutrition plays a vital role on physical and mental growth and development in early life. Healthy eating behavior is developed in early childhood which will impact on child growth and development throughout the life span. School-based nutrition education intervention can be improve the nutrition and health of school children, their educational performance and learning abilities may be enhance. Children spend most of their time in schools therefore schools have the powerful zone for promoting good healthy behavior among children. More ever, children health status and their educational performance both are interlink with each other. It is important to create a positive and healthy school environment for the health and wellbeing of children.
Food habits are very complicated in nature and various factors are involved in their development. Poor dietary habits and lack of physical activity both can be the main cause of poor nutritional status among school going children. observed that children are likely to eat more snacks, soft drinks and junk food because they spend their most of the time away from home and family. Excessive consumption of soft drinks, low intake of fruits and vegetables, high intake of energy and fats increase the risk of becoming overweight and obese.
Children food choices are also influenced by the foods offered in canteen, shops or at events at schools. That’s why it is important to change the school policies which are affecting the school environment can improve the opportunities for health enhancing food choices. One of the study reported that the TACOS (trying alternative cafeteria options in school) study have been effected due to the sales of low fat food as compare to the high fat food but it is not influence the adolescence self- reported fat intake.
In Pakistan, children have very little knowledge about importance of fruits and vegetables. In addition the children belong to the lower socio-economic status had lower nutrition knowledge as compare to those who belong to high socio-economic status. According to the national nutritional survey of Pakistan 2012-2013, 50% children are malnourished and 49% are anemic due to poor dietary intake. Stunting was commonly found among children of Pakistan.
