2.1.3 Multi-purpose furniture
As with the definition, both the official definition and the author’s explanation and definition of what micro design is, space is a major problem factor. The space that needs to be designed and all necessary areas such as a bathroom and kitchen needs to be included in the design. Multi-purpose furniture can be a possible solution to aspects of the design.
When people find themselves in the problem of having no choice but to live in a small home/apartment new ideas must be thought of in order to organise everything, and most importantly, to fit all necessary furniture into the space to make it habitable (Lindqvist, K. 2014). Furniture pieces such as a bed, some sort of table to eat and work at and storage

This furniture piece designed by Tjokeefe is a three in on table. The piece consists of 3 pieces, that when put together form a cube, when taken apart can be used as two end tables and a coffee table, or three seats. The possibilities are endless. A splash of colour with the one piece being bring yellow and the other pieces white and black lends a bit of fun to the piece. 20 Figure 5: Coffee table, Tjokeefe
Danny Kuo makes use of vertical space with his furniture piece called Staircase. Kuo says: “The most efficient way to build is vertically. When it comes to interior design, the same rule can be applied.” And that is what he applied to this designer piece of him. It is nine drawers stack on top of each other, and the lower drawers multi-function as ladder steps to reach the higher drawers, hence the name

It incorporates architecture, interior architecture and furniture design to create a total design that can be modified for different occupants. It truly is functional space.

Robert Probst, a designer who worked as the Director of research for office of furniture manufacturer, Herman Miller Inc., developed the “Action Office”, it was a proposition for an altogether new kind of space, a design which had plenty of work surfaces and display shelves; partitions were a part of it, intended to provide privacy and places to pin up works in process. This is how the office cubicle came into being. Today, it is estimated that more than 40 million North Americans spend their working lives in cubicles, with many of them passing more waking hours in the closed-office environment than in any other—even their own living rooms.

When you look around you notice that there’s hardly any furniture in the room. There’s a nightstand, two chairs, and the bed, but other than that you don’t see much else besides a few things on the nightstand...

The world is developing every day and we continue to discover new and innovative ways to better our quality of life. A trend that everyone seems to be focused on is saving the environment, which is also known as sustainable living. Not only does this apply to our lifestyle and environment, but it also translates into design. Sustainable living is becoming more popular around the world and is a lifestyle using skillful and sensitive design. It eliminates negative environmental impact and requires renewable resources. We each have decided to research different furniture companies to broaden our knowledge of the innovative practices used in each company. Throughout our paper we will introduce each of our companies and the products and practices they use to produce sustainable furniture. Our research will show that sustainable furniture design is beneficial to consumers by allowing them to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle as their manufacturers develop innovative ways to make renewable furniture.
In his book, Precisions on the Present State of Architecture, Le Corbusier breaks down the construction of the modern house. Following functionalist ideals, he states, “There is really not a square centimeter lost here; and that’s not a small job!” (Le Corbusier 130). This idea of making the most of every centimeter ties back to functionalist thought. In Le Corbusier’s house, there is no excess space, no grandiose rooms or decoration, and no elements that are not essential for living. Each centimeter has a purpose. Later in the passage, Le Corbusier proclaims, “Monsieur will have his cell, Madame also, Mademoiselle also. Each of these cells has floors and a ceiling carried by freestanding independent columns” (130). By reducing each room to simply a cell, Le Corbusier removes the excess of a dwelling; the inhabitants do not have designated rooms or spaces, but cells. Evoking ideas of prison cells, the rooms described by Corbusier appear only large enough to sleep. There will be few extravagancies. Combining the two quotes, functionalisms influence on Corbusier’s planning and thought become strikingly
I turn around to look for the chairs and saw the west wall covered with old cracked wallpaper plastered with flowers. I glance behind me and see the receptionist desk once again, and the bulletin board on the wall next to it with dentist jokes and advertisements all over it. The receptionist smiles at me again and I turn back around. I see that the North and South walls are covered with old wood paneling. One wall has the door in which I just entered, and the other has the dark tunnel leading to the exam rooms. I spot the chairs just across the waiting room on both walls. I quickly choose the end one with green and orange flowers covering it and sit down.

... sort, and the downstairs tertiary. An exact copy of the ramp and tertiary layout has been provided to allow for a better feel for the size of the operation, please see the next two pages. Each copy has been clearly labeled for easy identification. The layouts clearly relate to the process choice in terms of having no easy flexibility due to sequence of job functions. The layout of the upstairs is too complicated due to being congested with several areas, each with a multitude of belts and slides. I will verbally explain it though. From the unloads, the material is sent upstairs to either the north or south primary, where there is a five-way split into a specific secondary. Out of each secondary there is also a five-way split to the downstairs tertiary. Finally, from the tertiary, the material is reloaded and sent out to the aircraft in containers. [5]
Close to the wall with books and papers haphazardly placed all over its surface sits the one piece of furniture no home can do without one. Some purchase this piece of furniture to fill up a space in a home and eat a meal or two. For others, it is a nothing more than a pretty addition to a beautiful home topped with an elegant table runner and properly placed plates and silverware. This furnishing comes in many shapes, sizes, and colors made of wood, stone, metal, and plastic. For most, the dining room table is a gathering place to share stories of their day and enjoy fellowship together. The family table in our house is plain, aging, and well used, not fancy and untouched.
Meanwhile, due to the fact that the space is being designed specifically for the individuals needs therefore, it conveys personality and energy of the person. Evoke harmonized feelings, perspective and state of the client’s needs play major role in the final design. For instance, if a client wants to keep some of their existing sentimental valuables (such as a piece of art work), designers must work around that need. The designer can create do-it-yourself projects where they can satisfy the customer’s needs while being on budget. Harmony and balance are also important, so designers must keep in mind functionality ( feng
“When it comes to interior design styles, give yourself the permission to think outside the box. There are so many wonderful ways to define who you are by creating a magnificent living space. Allow yourself to be creative. Be stylish. And when I say outside the box, I don’t necessarily mean go crazy, I simply suggest you take some steps to create the type of home that you really want or that your client is asking you to create” (Yule 1). Looking into interior design there are many elements that contribute to the way people view the room or area, such as the color, flooring, furniture, fabrics, and accessories in every room. Within the following research paper, interior design will be discussed by the interior design styles, the effects of color, and the trends of bathrooms.
