Academic Dishonesty: A Serious Concern at Nicklas University

Academic dishonesty consists of a work or an idea that is claimed by a student to be their own, but is proved to be taken from another source. At Nicklas University, we strive for our college students to be successful and thorough in their endeavors, without taking shortcuts. Although there are different degrees of plagiarism, it is a serious manner that must be treated as such and certainly will not be handled lightly. At this level in a student’s academic career, they are expected to comprehend and demonstrate what academic honesty consists of. Rules concerning academic dishonesty are concrete and no exceptions will be made except in rare circumstances determined by the Dean of Students, who will make these exceptions fairly to the best …show more content…

Plagiarism in any case is stealing, and under the policy enough leeway is allowed so that mistakes can be made without consequence, but serious acts of dishonesty must be punished. Any completed assignment which has more than forty percent detected as plagiarism is undeniably purposeful and even careless students will unintentionally plagiarize at a percentage less than forty. The purpose of any plagiarism policy is to hold students to a higher level to develop them into trustworthy adults because if students take shortcuts at a college level, odds are that those opportunities will be taken at a professional level also. The repeat policy is in place to ensure that students are submitting their own work and putting effort into their assignments. Students who plagiarize repeatedly deserve a greater punishment than a one-time offender because cheating one time in desperation is erroneous but understandable, however failing to complete one’s own work for a second time is unacceptable and purposeful. In addition, the ranks are in place to better categorize the intensities of different acts of plagiarism so there is less debate on which punishment a student should receive. The percentages tied to those ranks solidify the differences between levels so there is no grey area.     When I think of plagiarism, I imagine a person literally stealing from another individual. The term plagiarism is derived from the Latin word plagi rius, which essentially represents the felony of kidnapping. An individual who kidnaps anothers work is a felon.
