The Career I decided to do my research on is a Child, Family, and School Social workers. I choose this career because it is of interest to me. I really enjoy a job where I can work with and help those who are in need. Earlier in the school year I took a career test in the school’s career center and this is a job that showed up and is part of the reason I am taking the time to look at what is required of the job. What does a social worker do? A social worker has many duties. They need to assess the situations of those family’s or individuals they will be working with. Once they have assessed what they are working with they will be helping to council those in need. If they are working with children they will consult the parents and or legal guardians with what they have learned. They need to be excellent active listeners. It is also essential to be able to understand others reactions and why someone would react the way they do. You will have to be able to have great communications skills; weather that is though face-to-face, over the phone, or through email. You need to be able to be professional and polite. Social workers are more of a sedentary Job. You won’t be doing very much physical work, but you will be using your mind. You will be thinking and helping to make a difference in the lives of those your touch. According to an Unknown author (Sept 17, 2013) “Social workers provide services to help people cope with and overcome challenges in their every life.” Some other careers that seem interesting and are related to social work are a counsellor and a youth worker. A counsellor is someone that helps people to discover their emotions and their feelings. They often do this by looking over past experiences. Ms. Phillips provided a great deal of insight into child welfare practices of Pitt County (W. Phillips, personal communication, October 4th, 2013). I believed the interview was highly beneficial to Heather and I as prospective social workers. Understanding the amount of work that goes into positions such as Ms. Phillips’ will help us prepare for our future roles in the field. Ms. Phillips illustrated that though the helping field may require a great deal from the individual, the practice can be extremely rewarding.
There are many different career fields you can go into as a social worker: from mental health, drug and alcohol abuse all the way to child welfare. Child welfare is my primary target when I become a social worker. I feel that I will have the biggest impact if I help the kids out that will be creating our future world. If I can help the kids of the next generation then maybe my influence will help more than just those few kids I see every day. Plus ever since I can remember people told me I need to be doing a job that helps children. I want to be able to make a difference in the community, and if I can help the kids, then I know I’ll be helping the community. Being a student at Wilmington College will help me fulfill these values and skills, but the thing that

The job of a child welfare worker appears to be a demanding profession that promotes the child’s safety, but also strengthens the family organization around them in order to successfully raise the children. This child welfare workers work in the system known as the Child Protective Services whose initiative is to protect the overall welfare of the child. The short novel From the Eye of the Storm: the Experiences of a Child Welfare Worker by Cynthia Crosson-Tower demonstrates the skills necessary to deal with the practice of social work along with both its challenges and its happy moments. The novel consists of some of the cases involving Tower’s actual career in social work. In reading the book, I was able to experience some of the actual cases in which children dealt with physical and mental abuse from their families that caused them to end up within the system. Also, some of these children had issues in adapting to foster and adoptive families based on the issues they faced earlier in life. As we have learned earlier in the course, the violence that a child experiences early in life has an overall affect on the person they become as they grow into adulthood. When children deal with adverse childhood experiences, they are at a higher risk for abusing drugs and/or alcohol, increased likelihood of abusing their own child or spouse, higher rates of violent and nonviolent criminal behavior, along with several other issues throughout their lifespan.
Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Often times clients are those who may be vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.
To familiarize you with what social work is exactly I’ll provide you with a brief history about the career. I will not go too deep into it because I do not like to bore my reader. Social work began in in 1898 when a class was offered at Columbia University. It was a hit! Fortunately, the beginnings of social work paved the way of developing private and charitable organizations to the people who needed it the most. Until this very day, social workers are continuing to serve our society with their needs and recognizing our nation’s social problems and bringing them to the
I think we need to start with discussing what social work is and where it started. Social work, social problems, and the organizations that were developed is an attempt to cope with problems have had almost a parallel history. There are many people who have helped develop more progressive attitudes and programs toward the poor, the mentally ill, the unemployed, and children at risk. Many of the social welfare policies and programs we take for granted occurred quite recently in our history. Social work is an exciting career area that is highly related to psychology. Many individuals earn an undergraduate degree in social work and then go on to their masters. You can do so much with a social work degree. Social worker has a broad range
When I first realized I had an aspiration to have a career in social work I originally wanted to work with youth and adolescents. Initially, I decided youth and adolescent because I had dealt with many difficult experiences as an adolescent, which required assistance of social workers, and counselors. I was very thankful for the support I had which benefited my life in many ways, and dreamed of being able to do the same for other struggling youth.

Currently, I work at the Foster Knox Day Care here at UCM. Being a Social Work major has enhanced my love of helping children. After taking Human Behavior, I can cue in what is going on in the developmental stage of the child life. Now I understand that a two-year may not say No to be defiant. Being able to interact with children has made me more aware that I want to work with children as a social worker.
My understanding about the social work profession is one that works with a diverse group of people to better their well-being in all aspects. Social workers requires: responsibility, passion, and knowledge. The social worker has to understand their own personal cultural values, beliefs, and appreciate the multicultural identities of different people. The profession of social worker requires a lot of skills because they have different tasks and responsibilities. They are aware of social policies and programs for the diverse clients advocating.
