When I first realized I had an aspiration to have a career in social work I originally wanted to work with youth and adolescents. Initially, I decided youth and adolescent because I had dealt with many difficult experiences as an adolescent, which required assistance of social workers, and counselors. I was very thankful for the support I had which benefited my life in many ways, and dreamed of being able to do the same for other struggling youth. My view on social work has changed dramatically because of what I’ve learned so far in this course. I now realize social work is a global profession, and can take many forms. During week two, we discussed the history of social work. It was interesting to learn about the different organized which took place then, and some still occur. The “Charity Organization Society viewed poor as dysfunctional within a well functioning society” (Akesson, B. 2015). Specifically, what I found irrational, yet interesting was whom people of these organizations found “deserving” and “undeserving” poor, because I have also viewed those in poverty as “deserving” of help, no matter the circumstances. I believe you can’t characterize someone as deserving or undeserving based on their social status, and characteristics. Everyone has should have a chance at improving their well being whether they are a single parent, drug addict, struggling with disability and so on. If someone is striving to repair damages, and gain assistance they shouldn’t be stigmatized or judged to do so otherwise. Drug abuse can cause poverty, and poverty can cause drug abuse. Having a drug addiction can cause a disturbance in searching for a career, or interfere with a present career. It may cause the individual to spend majority of their income on drugs, rather than necessities. However, those in poverty may begin using drugs because they may be stressed and use it as an escape from reality. Also, they are typically surrounded by drugs, and have easy access to retrieving drugs. Either way, they are still human, and are challenged with life for various reasons, and deserve a way
