One of the toughest topics for me to talk about is religion. To me, religion feels more like following then just living. Spirituality allows one to live without fear of being punished or sinned. Equally important. Spirituality allows one to be who they want to be without feeling judged. Ultimately, spirituality is not only a sense of freedom but a sense of individualism. I was baptized as a baby but wasn’t necessarily religious growing up. Being baptized as a baby automatically meant identified as a Christian. Growing up, my family didn’t attend church regularly. Consequently, this has left me confused and has resulted in a lack of education about religion. With that said, I have found a connection to spirituality. Spirituality has allowed me to choose what I want to believe in rather than be told what to believe in. In addition, spirituality has shown me the path that I am destined to be on. Spirituality is a sense of freedom; I can think freely, act freely and oversee what path my life is on. If there is a time in my life when I feel I'm at a dead end; I use spirituality to follow my heart or what feels right at that moment. Believing in spirituality has allowed me to gain a positive outlook on life. I tend to just let things happen how they are supposed to happen. I feel that the universe will open …show more content…
Spirituality was introduced to me while I was in high school. High school was a never-ending nightmare for me. With that, I began to see a life coach a couple times a week. After just a couple short sessions, I began to feel a connection with what she was saying. In short, I learned that one cannot expect love unless you love yourself first. I noticed, the more I forced things, they wouldn’t happen. After finally letting things happen, I met my fiancé. I believe everything happens for a reason, sometimes we know the reason right away, other times we may
How do you think their spiritual beliefs and/or experiences had an impact on their lives?
If someone were to have asked me at the beginning of the semester what is spirituality, I would not have answered correctly. Without a doubt, I am sure I would have answered the question as a synonym to religion, or part of a religion at least. In any case, that is not the right answer, and I now know that. After looking farther into the topic and reading works written by well-known spiritual leaders and authors, I am now confident I know what spirituality is as well as how to execute or practice it.
In conclusion, for many the Santeria religion has brought them closer to their connection to the
Worthington et. al. (2011) says historically, religiousness involved individual and institutional elements; however, now spirituality is thought of as an individual phenomenon and linked with meaningfulness, New Age beliefs, and personal transcendence. Additionally, spirituality is described in personal terms like one’s relationship with God, and as a result, spirituality is more highly regarded than religion. The authors define spirituality as a feeling of closeness and having a relationship or dedication to God or a higher power; this can be a religious experience or a nonreligious one. They state that what one considers sacred is usually related to the awareness of social influences. According to the authors, four types of spirituality have been identified based on closeness to God. First, is religious spirituality. Religious spirituality’s connectedness to God is based on one’s specific denomination and the closeness is specific to the deity identified. Second is humanistic spirituality. Humanistic spirituality involves closeness to humans. This type of spirituality fosters a loving connection with a specific group of people and a sense of selflessness and concern
Here in the US we have several different religions being practiced everyday: like Zoroastrianism, Shinto, Muslim, Buddhism, Hinduism, and as well as Judaism and Christianity and even newer beliefs like scientology. Religion is a very important thing to people because it helps us find answers to some very difficult questions, namely what are we and why are we here. This is very important itself because knowing who we are is the basis of our beliefs and the foundation to everything that we do. (Neusner, 2009)
Spirituality refers to the perspective of that which is valued in life, and that which must to be upheld and defended under any and all circumstances, regardless of the social environment and surrounding conditions.
Spirituality hasn’t played an important role in my life thus far, as my initial understanding of the concept has always been related to religion. Growing up, my mother’s sides of the family were firm believers in god, and Christianity. Neither my mother, nor my father ever included religion into their lives, or mine. In fact, religion created a barrier within our family dynamics for as long as I can remember. My aunt was married to a priest and during our family dinners he would pull me aside to read bible versus. My parents were not happy once they realized that my uncle was doing this with me behind their backs. This marked the beginning of divergence between my mother and aunt’s side of the family. It wasn’t until my grandparents passed
Ultimately, spiritual formation is a journey I will walk throughout my lifetime and it is one that I gladly am not alone in traveling. My end goal is union with God in His Kingdom, as I believe it is for all Christians. I intend on allowing His grace and love to flow freely through me and show in my heart as well as in my actions.
Religion plays an enormous role in the history of mankind. Wars have been fought over it, lives have been surrounded by it, and it has directly or indirectly shaped the lives of many individuals. Culture and religion play a large role in developing each other. People’s religion is decided by their culture. The prominence or the lack of religion will develop someone’s religious identity have play a core role in determining what that person believes.
Strength is belief. People gain strength through taught spirituality and beliefs. This could be by believing in a religion or believing in a God. Religious people have a sense of spirituality strength with God, and those people believe that God will be there to guide them and to help them on their way through the tough times. Spirituality grows over time by love, faith, and hope that are felt during a personal experience. Love is one of the many ways that grow society spiritually. When a person believes positive and good; when they always do the right thing no matter what they think the outcome may be; when they give their all to help the wellbeing of others; that is when there is a great sense of spiritual strength in humanity. When people are successful in knowing what will help them grow, that’s when spirituality shines. Giving love and friendship to others makes humans grow spiritually. Love gives the strength to believe the good in others and to not be afraid to fight battles alone. Friendship provides the strength to trust others and be o...
Spiritual leadership has not been widely accepted by leaders because of the religious implications, according to Yusof and Tahir (2011). Additionally, theorists and practitioners do not agree on one definition, adding to many versions of the term spirituality (Fukui et al., 2010). Furthermore, terms such as workplace spirituality, spirituality, spiritual leadership, and organizational spirituality are used interchangeably, creating inconsistency and confusion. Others claim workplace spirituali...
“Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life.” According to Buddha, everyone needs some form of spirituality to define his or her life and existence. Webster Dictionary defines spiritualism as “a system of beliefs or religious practices based on supposed communication with the spirits of the dead, often times through mediums.” Though this is one general definition of spiritualism, this concept is one that does not hold a conclusive meaning. Each and every single person has the ability and right to create and practice their own idea of spiritualism. From ancient times to present day, the term and practice of spirituality has transformed, particularly from region to region. Despite the discrepancies in practices and overall understanding of this idea, spirituality has had an effect and impact upon all of humanity since the creation of time. This religion that is believed to have been established in the early eighteen hundreds, after two little girls claimed to have the ability to talk to spirits, sparked interest in this spiritual movement, allowing it to spread rather rapidly over many geographical locations. Aside from being recognized as a religion, spiritualism is also believed to be a form of philosophy and a science in which spiritualists believe that there is life after death and try to demonstrate this through the ability of attempting to communicate with those that have passed on. Spiritualism was socially different from other religions in existence at the time because it presented followers with a more tolerant belief system that assimilated the principles and facts from a selection the world's religions. Spiritualism also made it acceptable for women to play a disti...
The definition of religion is the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods(Merriam-Webster). After this semester I have come to realize that religion is a much more advanced, complicated, and personal definition. Religion can’t be defined in one word or one term because there is a lot that religion entails. There really is no concrete answer of what religion is and the definition varies among different groups of people and individuals.
Ganga and Kutty stated (2013) spirituality refers to a path of life that enables people to seek reason of their existence and helps people explore challenges. Ganga and Kutty (2013) conducted a study on adults to see if spirituality had positive effects on their life, meaning did their life have purpose or value. Each participant partook in a study that asked questions about their life and purpose. The study consisted of a daily spiritual experience scale, it was a point scale that consist of 16 items to be rated on a 6-point scale. The results concluded that spirituality has positive effects on their life when seeking their purpose. Each participant felt that he/she had a purpose and that their life was valuable and meaningful (Ganga and Kutty, 2013). According to Ganga and Kutty (2013), spirituality is a way for people to discover the meaning of their life. Spirituality is a personal adventure to understand answers to the questions they seek to find about their spirituality and purpose in life. It says spirituality is a set of beliefs and practices that concludes with life changing paths that make a person’s life meaningful. Spirituality has been viewed as an important factor when realizing the purpose of life. Ganga and Kutty (2013) expressed spirituality enhances our emotions, thoughts, beliefs, relieves stress and it finds meaning and purpose of one’s life. I believe
Spirituality can be found in almost anything. Finding spirituality in something can make someone feel enlightened and bring strong emotion and deep feeling. In some cases, people would be willing to sacrifice nearly anything to help maintain the integrity of what they find to be spiritual. The earth is found in many cultures to be regarded as highly spiritual. There are countless numbers of people willing to sacrifice money, material goods, jobs and several other things that most people take for granted, only to help keep what they find spiritual in its natural, beautiful, and wholesome state: nature.
