As a freshman in college, I hear infinite of different slang words with different meanings to it. Meanings that mean something different to each and every individual. When I was in high school, there were tons of different abbreviations and substitutions teenagers would use instead of the actual word. My vocabulary at school was at times extraordinary in my household and sometimes it still is. I remember coming home from my cross country race and telling my sister, “that jawn was so challenging”, my mom in confusion asked what I meant by “jawn”. I proceeded to telling her that it was just a slang word that substituted the word “race”, in other words “the race was so challenging”. Philadelphians go around saying, “I hung out with my jawn earlier” or “Did you see that jawn walk by?”. Many people in relationships post pictures of themselves on Instagram or Snapchat and caption it “My jawn and I’ or “My Jawn”. Today’s generation has adapted “jawn” to their everyday vocabulary allowing the slang to substitute in replacement of anything or anyone he or she want it to. There has been occasions where I have referred to my best friends as, “my jawns” or I have even referred to my boyfriend as “my main jawn”. No one gave them this nickname other than themselves. They started calling their own friend group “The jawns”. Everyone in school knew them as that. When an event was going on, students in school would say “The jawns are coming”. It sounded silly, but they chose it and liked it. In a way it was their image. Many people would judge them because they called themselves “the jawns” but then again it was just high school. High school is filled with teenagers and with teenagers comes drama. When they decided to call themselves “the jawns” they did not harm anyone else nor disrespect anyone else. Being called “jawn” is one's decision. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions. Personally, I do not find it disrespectful on calling my friends or someone I know a “jawn”.
