Nelson Mandela once stated, “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” Today’s society is based on self-centered ideas such as: how their individual freedom is being limited for the benefit of others. Furthermore, public health should be considered when developing ideas of how one can express all aspects of the freedom they have been granted with. Freedom is often defined as the rights someone has that they can use without restraint. Furthermore, when those rights are limited many people become upset because they believe they are entitled to do what they please without regarding anybody else’s opinions, thoughts,health, etc. When those individuals becomes upset about their rights being limited, they start riots and petitions with people who think similarly to them. However, they do not take into account how they are limiting the rights of others while they are being selfish. For example, the ozone layer is being destroyed by the millions of fossil fuels being used daily, but because they passed laws on the consumption of fossil fuels, the ozone layer is a lot less closer to being completely destroyed. If they would not have passed the laws, in a few decades the climate problems now being faced would have been more difficult to bear. People should benefit from freedom, equality and justice. Absolute freedom is sometimes very dangerous and may destroy the basic principles of the society. A lot of people believe that freedom means doing whatever you want, whenever you want.
In today’s society, these themes are still dominant. While some view freedom as a responsibility, others take advantage of the privilege. Those with a survival of the fittest attitude do what they want, when they want, in order to get what they want. People with individual conscience believe they have the privilege to do what is right, whether it be for themselves or for others. Unfortunately, those who search for freedom are usually seeking it from those who take advantage of it. While freedom comes with a cost, every American should be able to enjoy their own freedoms and liberties without anyone restricting them.
The interpretation of freedom can sometimes be viewed differently among people, which creates the pursuit of liberty to be much more arduous. Freedom represents something greater than just the right to act however citizens choose it also stands for securing to everyone an equal opportunity for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. According to society today, freedom means more than just free to do say and do anything you want. Taken literally, that approach would produce anarchy every man, woman, and child for himself or herself. Fortunately, none of us has to live that way. Freedom is the quality a person has with controls over his or her own life, and nobody can control them or tell that person what to do. Complete freedom is very hard to obtain in today’s society.
Many believe that freedom is being able to do and say whatever you'd like without consequences. In ways this may be true but, when we say or do things that are against rules or that challenge society we might find ourselves in trouble. But if we don't challenge society or anything else for that matter we find ourselves stuck without change. In the Nineteenth century, most people had one goal that they wanted to obtain more than any other. It wasn’t immense wealth, health, or even material goods, even though that was probably what some had in mind. It was the freedom. There are numerous ways in which freedom could be defined such as: having the “rights” of a white adult male, having a voice in the community/ government, not being owned by another human, being able to speak, write, and practice whatever religion one may want without consequences. The list of what it was like to be free goes on and on. All of these qualities of being free still hold true today. Many of those who were not free spoke out against the oppression they were facing. Fredrick Douglas and Harriet Jacobs were two African American writers whose pursuit for freedom caught the eye of many Americans. These two writers attacked what Americans in the Nineteenth century painted freedom to look like and the reality of what it really was. They lived in a time where Americans talked about all men being equal, yet they owned slaves. Both being born into slavery, Douglas, Jacobs and other slaves were not meant to read and write like those of the white race. Something as simple as literacy was important root to the idea of freedom. Fredrick Douglas and Harriet Jacobs used their personal life experiences to show their readers why freedom was and still is so much deeper than the characteristics named earlier. These writers struck the hearts of Americans and redefined freedom as a treasure that allows one to be a self-governing, literate, and a self-reliant individual.
There are many ways to define Freedom. To many people, freedom means more than just ‘free to do whatever I want’. Most people would agree that having freedom includes the right of liberty, which is having the right to act according to your own will, as long as it doesn’t interrupt someone else’s liberty. You can see this right exhibited on the Declaration of Independence. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Thomas Jefferson, the author of this quote, and the other founding fathers really wanted to emphasize the idea of liberty and freedom. So much that they dedicated a portion of the Declaration of the Independence talking about American liberty and freedom. When America was being founded, we were lucky to have people who believed in liberty, equality, and justice for all. They believed in it so much that they worked for it, and gave hope to minority groups who had previously felt constant pessimism. These people have abdicated their freedom to outside factors. Acknowledge that you are in the best position to alter your own situation and accept the consequences of all of your actions, and you will be truly free. And it will be obvious, from that point on, when someone tries to take your freedom away. What about personal rights? Do we have the right to free speech?
A college education has become a necessity in today’s society. Money should not limit the opportunities of a brilliant mind. A child who is currently homeless may have the capability of becoming a world leader or curing cancer. Colleges should be free to attend and funded by the U.S. government because it will help students focus on their studies and encourage them to work harder in school.
There are many different takes on the distinction between killing and letting die. Direct killing is designed as a direct action to kill a person. Yet, letting die is designed to reduced pain and suffering. Some argue that there is no difference in the two, but others argue there is a significant difference. Rachels, Nesbitt, and Callahan all argue their claims about the distinctions of killing and letting die. Altogether, they have very insightful arguments and each should be considered carefully.
Freedom of expression, the understanding of learning other’s discussion and emotions, along with a world full of voices is what brings everyone together. With every war, protest, and period of time there was always one goal to achieve and it was freedom. It’s what makes our world go round, what gives hope and what we have without even realizing it. Many generations have passed and all have gone through the same thing again and again with that word. It’s seen all around our society and is taught in everything we learn.
Spring -- a season of hope and joy. In many countries, such as Japan, they see it as human life; something so precious to others. The transition from the cold and harsh winter into the warm and blooming spring is gorgeous and allows the mind to calm and to restart. This sense of freedom, a sense of starting over; it welcomes the human life. It is as if you ran miles and miles, only to become exhausted and to never meet your goal.
